Webber - the man, the myth

In the intro at the start of LV it tells us about Hpt Webber - was he a real figure? - if so I'd be interested to know what happened to him in the war. Its only a game but you do grow attached to your 'team' and it would be nice to know he got back home ok and survived the 'Ost Front'.
As an aside I used to know 2 germans who fought in WW2, both are now no longer with us. Does anyone know of a web site where you can search for names of German combatants , find their unit and history?

This for me has always been one of the most appealing aspects of the campaign format.

I remember well in SP3, where I designed 17 campaigns from WW2 onward to Desert Storm. In the 1967 Arab-Israeli campaign I portrayed the Israeli 7th Tank Brigade in its march across the Sinai.

One battle in particular I will never forget. An Israeli M-48 tank platoon served as a fire brigade on a ridge moving from one side to another as the Eqyptians attacked again and again from all sides.

My tankers fought so heroically against incredible odds and various AT weapons. By the end of the battle I had lost nearly the entire platoon!

I was so moved I had to stand from my chair and salute them...fallen heroes in the heat of battle. I guess I get too involved in my battles sometimes. But what the heck! Its fun!

In some of the SPWAW campaigns Fabio Prado on his website had listed some of the German and Russian heroes of battle. I'm not sure if it is still there or not.

Gotta love those heroes!
