do gunships block land movement

Gunships can block retreat over bridged rivers, but do they block enemy land movement over bridged or unbridged rivers ?

Gunboats? Or did you mod the game to include Cobras and Longbows?[;)]

/end pedant alert

Yes, gunboats block movement over navigable rivers, bridges or not.

"gunship" is the Navy's technical term for ships primarily armed with guns. [:)]

Which is why you build those forts and arm them with lots of heavy cannon...

Oh don't mine me, I can be a little dinghy when I'm having a maritime. You should take whatever I say with a galleon of salt, as my barque is often worse that my bite. I wouldn't want to torpedo a good conversation, as I usually try to play the icebreaker rather than a destroyer, but really, you ought to frigate about it...[;)]

Death, sir, is too good for you. [:@]
