Oops - a small problem (again) - no Greasylake please

Post by vettim89 »

Well one of my carriers took enough damage during the recent battle that the air groups went scrambling to nearby bases. I rushed the CV (which shall remain nameless) to a nearby base, pumped her out, and put out the fires. While that was going on I transferred the SBD's to that base. These units immediately hopped back aboard and are at the correct strength (foreshadowing) The F4F's were too shortlegged to make it to the base in question. SO they got picked up by the carrier on its way back to PH. The problem is I must have had accept replacements on becasue when I stopped in with my CV to pick up my lost fighters, I now have a VF squadron with 49 planes and pilots.

This now overloads the CV by over 10% which is from what I understand is the magical number. My plan is this and I am not sure if it will work: when the TF gets back to PH, I will transfer the VF to the AB, divide the unit, transfer the parent fragment back to the carrier the next turn, and then disband the remaining fragment. Of course I will have replacements off during thsi transition. There are F4F's at PH so that should not be a problem.

Do you think this will work. If not, any ideas what will. the only other things I can think of is to turn off replacements for this unit and let op losses and attrition take the squadron down to correct size

I don't know about splitting the group, but attrition sounds like the best course of action. Maybe pull the TBDs off and just run with the SBD and a super squadron for a while. Besides, it can't be gamey when the Engine did it to you![;)]

You can always move that squadron to a normal base where the exces planes will go into the reserve of that squadron, then move the parent away and disband the exces planes into another squadron or even the plane pool in SF.....

How long does it take for them to move into reserve? Great idea, I think I'll try that one out myself!

It only takes a single turn for an exces of planes to go either into reserve or into the damaged planes pool.....

I could be wrong on this point, but I didn't think it was possible to disband fragments of air units, only the parent formations.

In a previous game (as the Japanese), I lost a carrier and had fragments of the airgroups left at a nearby base with only 1 or 2 planes and a dozen high experience pilots. I tried to get the pilots back by disbanding the fragment into another airgroup, which didn't work.
