Boron vs Archduke Rematch GPW(byBoron)

Post by TheArchduke »

June 22th, 1941 ,Turn 1

Well, the rematch is on and I am playing the Soviets this time around. My first turn consists of frantic shuffling and basically running as far away as I can on the front. As I am rather dependant on Boron not knowing where I deploy my troops and build my defenses I will post those screenies only when Boron encounters my troops. Thus I can only offer an overview map and kills and losses.

Boron´s first turn is impressive. As always when it comes to micromanagment and tactics he takes the upper hand.

I'll try to post some screens this time too.

In my first turn i did not aim at maximizing soviet losses though because i regrouped instead somewhat already.

We are at turn 4 already. Arch annoyingly uses "Hitler's Wellenbrecherstrategy". He is blowing up every bridge and leaves strong Kampfgruppen in nearly every city. So far it seems to work rather well. You can see them even in the strategic overview:

The situation for AG Center is quite interesting. Here i think Arch did hurt himself more with his bridgeblowing than AG Center. Minsk is nearly cut of from supply now. So my fast forces ignore Minsk and head for Smolensk. The catching up infantry divisions can take Minsk in a few turns then.

Currently Powerpointswise german strength is 17648, russian strength 15274 pp.
Kills and losses have constantly declined since we are both running currently. Arch is trying to save as many of his troops as possible whereas i try to reach my operational goals for my 41 campaign asap, hoping to give Arch not the opportunity to form solid, well equipped defensive lines that are a nightmare for an attacker. Arch is a much better defender than me.

Turn 5:

I hoped to annilihate Archs Center Airforce and amassed every available AG North and Center fighter. Seems though that Arch put his fighters on quick retreat, probably 25% losses. So the result is annoying given the committed forces for that task. At least their readiness should be pretty low now giving me air superiority for the next couple turns probably.

Turn 5 was another turn consisting mainly of marching forward. But some leftover pockets got sacked too, so the soviets had decent losses.

Turn 6 saw little action, in turn 7 Arch once again tried to compete for air superiority in the center, resulting in 9 destroyed fighters vs. 2 axis fighters lost. This way his ground troops get 1 turn resting time, but this tactic is costly.

The armored spearheads of AG Center spot a strong russian tank korps in Smolensk though. Will the russians counterattack ? In the south and north meanwhile our troops are marching forward without much enemy contacts.
In the south especially this might change soon though.
The brave finns lured a soviet tank division into a trap with a feint retreat from the mannerheim forts into the deep finnish woods. The ambush worked and the finns wiped out the whole division quickly with attacks from all sides.

Powerpoints is currently ~19,5k axis, ~16k soviets.

Things are indeed not looking good. I try to post my AAR of the first 5 turns today as most of the initial deployment is now irrelevant or overrun.

Turn 3

It is now about Turn 12, so I can safely post my AAR for the first turns. Things could have gone a lot better in the center and north, but at least my plan of delaying Boron has worked out, mostly. Though with the higher losses I sustained, this could prove a bigger problem then I thought it would.

The situation in the center on Turn 3, I established two defensive lines as to slow down Boron´s forces, though I hopped that Boron would drive on through Minsk and then through the swamps. He didn´t do me this favour rendering my southern defence line useless.

In the south, even more then in the north and center, I decided not to fight Boron directly but dig in Kampfgruppen in each city, thereby slowing Boron down or force him to dig out my KGs. (30-50 Rifles, 4 Machine Guns, 4 Bazookas, 1 Infantry Gun).

Important cities also got an AT gun when I could afford them.

Turn 5

In the center I established another line of defense near Vyazma in the woods as a final slow down to Boron´s forces before he takes Moscow. Fighting back is not an option as I lost air superiority very quickly and never regained it till Turn 12.

There is no need for losses/kills as losses on the soviet side remain high and kills low. Here is the Crimea where I adopt a classic stance of only defending Sevastopol seriously.

The abandoded Mannerheim line which only served as a deathtrap for a panzerdivison scouting it out and 2 infantry divisons lateron trying to occupy it.

Turn 8

Boron nicely provided an AAR on how he broke my Smolensk lines by winning air battles and using overwhelming forces. Here is my failed attempt at blocking his spearheads in the center.

To see how much Boron aims for the center and how sluggish his progress is in the north and the south, see the overview for turn 8.

Turn 10

To put it nicely, my counter-attacks in the North and Center have failed and have done so in big style. PP count is 20k Axis to 16k Soviets. So things are not looking good. Since 2 turns I am only digging in and praying. We will see how I fare. So far it looks like another 41 loss of the SU.

The last turns i always had time constraints so i didn't write further aarposts. I just finished the 13th axis turn.
Now i have some time again so it's a good opportunity for a review of the 41 operations from the axis viewpoint.

AG North had to cede her Panzergroup in the first turn already to AG Center, so AG Center could also cede Panzergroup Guderian to AG South in turn 1. So my operational planning put the Schwerpunkte on the Center and the South.
AG North, stripped off her fast forces had as minimum goal for 1941 thus only to advance to Pskov and Veliki Luki. These goals have already been achieved. Russian resistence seems rather low in this sector though, so AG North will continue to advance until severe russian resistence is met. This way we either gain more ground or tie some russian forces which will be missing on the other fronts.
The finns do hit and run tactics. Unfortunately their forces are not strong enough yet to try a major offensive vs. Leningrad on their own. But they suffered nearly no casualities so far while damaging a few russian units and tieing up quite a few in Leningrad.

My goals for AG Center have been:
A. Quick advance to Smolensk, ignoring Minsk with the fast troops in the hope of overrunning a potential russian line there before it is too heavily fortified and guarded. This has been very successful and the russians also lost lots of fighters there in vain attempts to contend for air supremacy in the center. This has granted me complete air supremacy in the south from turn 1 onwards.
B. After the situation around Smolensk is mainly cleared do not wait for the infantry to catch up but immediately advance southeast, main goals the factories in Orel, Kursk, Bryansk and Voronesh. I could have tried to go for Moscow instead, but chose the above plan in advance already and sticked to it. My reasoning has been:
-The surprise moment. Moscow looks like the next logical goal, so russian defenses in the southeast direction are most likely rather thin and thus easy to overrun.
-Northern Pincer in case the soviets put a major effort into trying to hold Kiev or launch a counteroffensive there (since i ignored Kiev as operative goal for AG South).
-For some time, roughly till the infantry advances near Smolensk my Panzers threaten Moscow nontheless, tieing down soviet forces there. When this threat is gone because they are too far south the infantry most likely has arrived and can keep the threat on Moscow alive and maybe try to capture the city if the russians do not keep enough forces there. So either way i profit from the situation, whereas a classical operation typhoon is risky because the soviets tend to defend moscow best.

And finally the South. There i ignored Kiev on purpose and decided to head into the donetzk and kharkow area instead. Only an infantry army (Reichenau) has been assigned to the Kiev area with the goal of "kampfkräftige Aufklärung" (is there an english term for this german military phrase ?). Eventually thanks to my northern pincer from AG Center and the option to start a southern pincer from the kharkow area Kiev would be doomed anyways. In Case Arch had tried a major offensive there i would have let him gain some ground probably and then depending on his success either made my huge pocket with the 2 pincers or if it would have been weaker likely immediately stalled it with directing some new production to the area in combination with some tactical bombing.
I have 2 more turns of good weather for sure but Arch has two quite powerful armies around Kharkow and Stalino. I underestimated his forces there, so it might turn out as a mistake that i splitted my 2 panzer groups in the south a couple of turns earlier. I am worrying especially at Kharkow, there the supporting infantry divisions are behind some turns.

Strategically the soviet union is quite damaged, they have been at 15-16k pp since some turns while the axis has gained some pp every turn so far and is currently at about 22000 pp.
