The Situation on New Caledonia has gotten worse. I had feared he had snuck in another RCT or at worst an American Division, but no, its the NZ Bde from Fiji and another US Infantry Division.
Still can't believe they made it past my 2E Bombers at Luganville and my Carriers (not to mention my subs)!

JULY 31st, 1942

The 2nd and planned Deliberate Attack on Darwin just failed to achieve 1;! odds or bring down his fortifications to Zero, but at least he suffered more casualties then I did. I will have to wait a day or two, since this attack (or the combination of back-to-back attacks) jumped my disruption level over 50!
U.S. PT Boats in New Caledonia finished off the damaged Destroyer Yukaze, at least they hit it with 2 torpedoes it would be a total joke if .50 cal MG fire sank it!
My 63 Betty bombers at Lae still have not struck his damaged British Battleships! One datai has been there over a week, while the other datai and chutai have been there for several days now. Very frustrating! They have supply and support...actually they have more supply then the Nells atPort Moresby who actually struck!
Another almosty totally ineffective bombardment of Efate.
Interestingly B24D's from Midway struck at Wake. Not much damage but perhaps there is an opportunity for me here, just have to figure out how to do something about that.
Haven't found his carriers in the Aleutians yet, but I've made my presence in the area known. He must not have any real supply on adak Island or else he would have attacked by now. Perhaps I still have a chance to withdraw the 7th Infantry Division (again).
Seems there is a holiday for Japanese bombers in Australia, since none of them have struck over the last few days.

More Synch Bug Issues...Arrrghhh All of sudden Synch Bug issues and rerunning the turn with different results. None of which were better for me!
Good News though is that a handful of TONY & TOJO Fighters have been produced and in a few days the IJAAF will begin changing over to its new Fighter planes!

Once more I am hit by several Fighter units not escorting or flying CAP! Will try to force my ANNS at Koumac to hit his PT Boats by making their range 1 or 0. The 1st Mixed Rgt will hit Broom tomorrow and the 56th Brigade will begin disembarking at Wyndham. My lack of strikes versus his Australians at the crossroads have placed my whole defense in a shambles. I had though that my bo0mbers at Wyndham would somewhat disrupt his troops, but to no avail, for they have not attacked in almost a week!

AUGUST 3rd, 1942

Seems my bnombers in Australia, particular those based at Wyndham are still on strike even though two of the groups have morale at the 99 level! Without them my troops at the crossroads will not be able to hold off the Allied counter attack. In actuallity everything went to pot around Dartwin yesterday. No bombers flew, yet the transports from the same base flew and dropped the PAratroopers. My Bombardment TF strangely stopped 1 hex o/s of Darwin...they were all 30 knot ships (after slight sys damage) and 5 hexes away.
My Sally's at Luganville refuesed to fly again, although the Betty's at Luganville flew...the Sally's morale dipped to 68,69 this turn. Again they haven't flown a mission in a weeks time.

AUGUST 4TH, 1942
Again we spot his British Battleships lingering in the Gulf of Carpentaria, but no Strikes are launched against them! Not from anyone of the three possible bases in Betty/Nell torpedo range!
To add to the frustration, no bombers based in anyone of my Australian bases flew either.
The only real good news was that my attack on Darwin reduced the Fortifdications to 0. But the 4th Mixed Briagade holding the crossroads was forced back towards Wyndham. It'll be a few days before the 56th Infantry Brigade will be fully unloaded and in position. I hope I can take Darwin before the situation becomes untenable.
All of my Oscar factories converted to TONY factories! I should have alot of TONYs next turn...I had 26 today.

Enough TONY's are being produced that I should be able to upgrade 1 Fighter Sentai a week. With TOJO's I currently have 25 in the pool, so I figure 2 Sentais every 3 weeks.
I am in the process of tranfering my NICK's out to defend Wake. Perhaps they can shoot down some of his B-24's on their "trainning" runs. I feel I might as well try this as they are worthless to me just sitting in Japan.
China is just killing me in this game. It seems not matter what I do or how long I keep Ichang surrounded I will never get a favorable "roll". Then when I am defending in Nanning with 4 Forts and planty of supply, my AV gets adjusted lower then my max! I don't understand it...too many variables I guess.

Darwin still holds on! I have another group of SNLF Paratroopers in reserve, I was going to use them for Perth, but I guess I need them now. Hopefully one more assualt will take Darwin. I have no idea why my bombers in OZ aren't flying...its been 10 days since the bombers in Wyndham flew....and the airfield has even increased from a 3 to a 4!

AUGUST 7, 1942
Well the attack on Darwin failled-again. Floyd forced his way past the crossrads and now has 1 division attempting to drive down towards Darwin.
Hopefully my NICK's will be in place soon to see if they can "get in the game".
It is taking forever for my TONY's & TOJO's to repair for damaged state, only 2 or 3 per base per turn.  This is strange b/c at the same bases it took only 3-4 days for the Marys to upgrade, convert , and become 100% operational LILLY's.

AUGUST 8th, 1942
American PT Boats ravage Koumac again when the IJN CL &2 DDs choose to run back to Luganville even though orederd not to.
The American Destroyes who raided Wake yesterday withdrew w/o a scratch.
But two major positives; the Warspite yesterday and the Royal Sovereign today were finally sunk. Those dam Betty groups in Lae choose todya to attack the Royal Sovereign after Nells for Pt.M. had already sunk it....costing me 2 80 exp Betty pilots. THose 63 Bettys were sitting there forever (9 days) and now they attack...when the ship is already sunk!
Another positive was that the bombers from Wyndham actually struck and did decent damage at Darwin. Maybe tomorrows assault will be 'the one'. I have about a company of the 2nd PARA Rgt and I'm going to drop them into the fray as well.

Post by Coach Z »

August 9th, 1942

Darwin still holds. It seems impossible but even with little supply and no forts I still can not take Darwin. Even without the fortifications and with all my bombardments his adjusted AV is still 50% over his Max AV. Over the last two days my bombers, (4 Sally Sentais and 1 Helen Sentai) at Wyndham who did not strike for 12 days previous have gotten back into the war. If I don't take Darwin tomorrow, "my goose will really be cooked" (If it isn't already). Boy the combinmation of me making a bunch of mistakes and Floyd making some good decisions is needless to say kicking my a$$.
Repairing damaged Planes....some airfields only repaired 2 or 3 TONY & TOJO's from my upgrading air groups! They had down 4 or 5 yesterday...still the same # of planes and AV at these bases...why does the game hate me sooooo!
My ANNS at Koumac still refuse to strike his PT Boats and my ZEROs are not overly effective either.
My troops leaving Koumac are getting hit too hard.

CoachZ,
[*]I'm no expert on this, but I usually stand down my planes when I upgrade ... (I've never tested this)..but I seem to get better results at getting them operational again, faster.
[*]I'm sure you know this, but disruption, experience and leadership really matter in your assault on Darwin.
[*]Is Wyndham still lvl 3 airfield? Leaders? experience? fatigue? weather? proximity to HQ ... Interesting to see you are still using Nells ... no complaints from me ... just interesting.

Good Luck, like most of us, picking up playing tips from AAR's is a good way to go ...

The Planes are stood down or on Training 50%.

Unfortunately I know about disruption and supply levels etc, but for the most part their Disruption was surprisingly low (at least I thought) after several round sof combat - my 3 Divisions were in the low 20's.

Wyndham became a level 4 in the middle of that down period. They had been striking regularly before this "down time" (Or as Floyd teases me-all your pilots are taking soup noodle breaks) and after a couple of days their fatigue went to the 5-to-0 range  and their morale was 95-99. (Actually after 7 days all four Sally Sentais had a morale of 99). I have changed some Bomber units to more aggressive leaders often but that doesn't seem to help. (Except use up too many PPs)

Yeah evertytime I think of upgrading them I feel I need them on the front lines with no time to waste. So, I figure I'll use a bunch till the pool empties more.

P.S. Thanks for the comments.

AUGUST 10th, 1942

Another day another failed attack on Darwin. Perhaps I should Shock Attck there?
What was even worse was the fact my troops at canton were unable to dislodge the Chinese forces that entered that hex. That was very disheartening considering those 2 corps had just moved in and all my units (HQ Included) are Prepped @ 100 for Canton. and my adjusted AVwas LESS THEN 50% of my BASE AV!
ANNs were set to 100 feet, yet they still did not strike at his PT Boats.
Planes upgrading in dribbles, a few every day....perhaps I should have tried to upgrade them at bases w/o alot of extra Aviation Support?
I can only hope he takes the bait up in the Aleutians. The Hiryu's planes are based on the Shokaku & they haven't struck yet. With the Shokaku's VALs in China he probably thinks in being repaired & upgraded (which it already was) or else where. So he can only tell (by my strikes) that I have the Hiyo, Hosho, & Zuikaku in the region. I feel very confident with the Zuikaku, Shokaku, Hiyo, Hosho, Taiyo, & Unyo up there as well as the 48 Betty/Nell Bombers I have in the Aleutians.

So close but yet so far!
I spotted his TFs and even identified the Hornet...yet no strikes! His carriers struck at the 7th Infantry on adak Island.
A = My Carriers divided into 3 TFs.
B= US Carriers the Hornet & probably the Wasp...can he have repaired the Saratoga this quickly?
C= ATTU Island, home to 48 Nells [27 @ 85 experience] and 27 Zeros [80 experience] ....and he was within Nell torpedo range and Zero extended for escort!
D= Transport TF ....to unload more supply, or to "Dunkirk" the 7th Infantry; whichever I decide....soon.

AUGUST 11th, 1942
For some reason the 16th Army @ Darwin choose to launch a Deliberate Attack when I ordered a Bombardment Attack (and yes I checked after). This really screwed me because I was unloading two SNLF units over the beach and my AV got adjusted way down!
At Canton where I orderd a Deliberate Attack to drive the Chinese Corps out, the local commander countered it to a Bombardment Attack. Now I fear he'll get his other 2 or 3 corps in and make it impossible for me to push him out (with my success so far in Ground Combat).  I am having really bad Luck!
In the Aleutians (see pic previous) my plan worked brilliantly, except that not a single strike was flown from my carriers. It couldn't have worked better, I spot him in the AM Phase (with search planes & Kates from the Air Cmbt TF's)  and I'm 5 hexes away! Half of his planes strike Adak Island but I don't strike. Not from any of my carriers or from Attu which is 11 hexes away; the Zero's could have ecorted the torpedo carrying bombers! Did I mention that my luck is sucking!
It tells me it's going to Rain near New Caledonia, so I continue to move troops, but while my planes don't fly in the rain, the American bombers hit more Japanese shipping...ravaging the 8th Area Army HQ.

AUGUST 12th, 1942

My raid over Ichang got massacred by the AVG. One of the Oscar Snetais involved had experience over 75, and unfortunately it seems many of the better piulots were shot down (by the  AVG, who was outnumbered by more then 3:1).
My Anns finally struck, but only hit 1 PT Boat.
It looks like Floyd is planning to bombard Wake, I have minelayers two hexes away, I hope they can lay their minefield before he attacks and maybe 1 ship or two will hit some IJN mines!
