Global Glory v4.00

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Global Glory v4.00

Post by WanderingHead »

We really are close to a patch. Really. I think. I hope.

Maybe a week. Maybe two.

Anyway, with a patch will come a new version of Global Glory.

I can't write up the details in this post, too much detail. I thought I would share the Global Glory PDF "manual" (all 49 pages of rules and regulations!) and give folks a chance for last minute feedback.

Main highlights of changes from v3.00 (which was in AWD v1.020)
 • added WA surrender political event (retreat from some regions and refreeze all remaining WA regions). Similar to Russian surrender, but I change both to only trigger if Axis VPs satisfy the AV criteria. Hence, neither event will fire unless AV is disabled or the game is continued after AV.
 • the engine will include an option to turn off the afore mentioned Russian/WA surrender events, if preferred.
 • rejiggered the Balkans political events, giving more variety, making them more important to pay attention to, and also giving the German something specific to strive for to influence them (early conquest of Greece, before invading Yugoslavia).
 • included a political event where still-frozen Russia conquers and occupies Rumania. Low probability, and can only occur before France surrenders, but adds some variety.
 • included "undeveloped resource centers", representing natural resources (mostly oil) that are present but require more than 10 supplies (and more than 1 turn) to bring into production. Mostly in Iraq and the USA.
 • modified Syria joins Axis and Iraq joins Axis events, to be dependent on the success of the Germans&Italians in the Med.
I think that may be all of the big changes (summarized very compactly). The rest is details.

This file is a zipped PDF, and the forum only allows posting txt, gif, jpg. So I've called it a *.txt file. You can download it, change the extension to *.zip, then extract the PDF.

Also, the forum only allows 200kB files to be posted, so I had to compress the hell out of the map images and create a low-res version of the file. The maps are unreadable. If you'd like a full-res version of the file send me a message and I will send it to you.

I can't wait. I think the new political events will contribute considerably to replayability etc. Too bad I can't play any more games until this term is over!!! Thanks for all your work.

BB ... really like the idea of replacing AV with major power surrenders. Nice work.

We'll see how you like the implementation for the WA then. It is a little hard to design.

For Russia, it seems more straightforward. A lot of key territory lost leads to surrender.

For the WA, the remoteness of theaters makes it seem less straightforward. One thing I did is have the probability increase as a function of the number of strat bomb hits against England/Scotland factories, kind of a Battle of Britain model. Bombing alone won't do it, but it will help the odds later when perhaps the Middle East or India is captured.

For both Russia and WA, I had *only* factory regions (defined at game start) contribute to surrender. Just because it is simpler for the player to remember.

I do hope that it can be viable to play until one or both Allies surrender. I think some house rules like "AV is one Ally surrenders and Axis VPs reach 100" could be appropriate (since getting VPs to 100 should be easier after one Ally surrenders).

Great to see that u are working on a new mod. Any expected date of available?

btw, i have read the v4.0 menu and wonder whether the new "6.2.27 Yugoslavia Pro-Axis Coup" event actually prevent rumania, bulgaria and hunguria become axis by GER's attack at the pro-allied Yugoslavia?

I tested and verified the patch installer tonight. It should go out very shortly.

It was a little delayed by last minute changes to try to help the "old incompatible save causes a crash" problem. Just tricks with the installer, like moving old saves to a new location where they won't cause trouble but you can find them if you want them.

Of course, this patch should be save compatible with v1.020 anyway, it is mostly for people patching from an older version (like fresh-bought) that this should matter.

Yes, that is true to some extent. Under some circumstances Bulgaria can be pushed over by the capture of Greece (which feels right to me anyway), and Rumania can be obtained by the "Rumania joins Axis event" as a fall back. This event has a penalty in Russian WR. So, if the German exerts himself and gets the benefits of Yugo without repair and without partisans, then he will pay with a WR boost to Russia when he gets Rumania. Which probably just means you don't want to delay Barbarosa.

Hungary, there is no other way to get them, so it would take Barbarosa to bring them into the fold.

The Balkans changes haven't really been played, to be honest. I hope I thought through every eventuality adequately.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to play because I have tendonitis in my wrist, forcing me to keep computer interractions to a minimum. This mechanical failure forces me to stay away from the game, right when I have the scenario where I think I want it!

Ooohh. I just had a game where Russia invaded and occupied Rumania in Fall 1939 no less!! Very interesting change in gameplay. Germany's early production jump allowed it to really take it to the WA. But, Russia also had a jump.... When Germany invaded, the Russians were more prepared than normal!

The event added some nice variability to game play. Very enjoyable.
