I'll Pass

WW2: Road to Victory is the first grand strategy release from IQ Software/Wastelands Interactive, which covers World War II in Europe and the Mediterranean. Hex-based and Turn-based, it allows you to choose any combination of Axis, Allied, Neutral, Major or Minor countries to play and gives you full control over production, diplomacy, land, air and naval strategy. Start your campaign in 1939, 1940 or 1941 and see if you can better the results of your historical counterparts. A series of historical events and choices add flavor and strategic options for great replayability.

I'll Pass

Post by New York Jets »

When I saw this game available and read the promos I was HOT to buy this game.

Then I started reading threads.

I was hoping for some kind of computer version of Advanced Third Reich. This is not it from what I read in the forums.

I'LL PASS.

Maybe Matrix should open a thread in the General Discussion forum where all of us can post what games we are passing, and what games we are buying? That way the actual discussions about the games would get more helpful to both the ones that actually does not pass on a particular game, and to the designers as well.

Sorry guys, but I am not really interested in knowing which ones will pass on a game.

Sorry #2 - I am grumpy because there are quite a few threads on the different forums right now that keep a very low level. It's down to "this game is crap", "this functionality is for loosers", "I'll pass". Personal opinion is good and interesting, but please, try to pass along at least some content!

Thank you for that post. I get so frustrated reading all the negatives out there. How many companies listen to their customers to this extent? How many provide ongoing support for their products YEARS after they were released? How many companies get blasted in forums and just smile and say "thanks for the advice." I, for one, rarely post on these forums because my post quite often ends up evolving into some sort of an argument from people who seem to love wallowing in the mud.

My thoughts on this game? You'll be doing yourself a disservice by passing. Once the items noted in the update become reality, this game will be a "must have" if you want to model proper blitzkrieg tactics. I just cringed at some of the earlier posts where people were not using combined arms attacks, choosing to throw their armies head on into the teeth of the defenders without any sort of flank support, and then posting that the game was broken. It was obvious that they hadn't read the manual.

I've played THOUSANDS of games since I took up the hobby in the late 60's/early 70's. Back then, we were happy with the few yearly releases we got--now I literally have a smorgasbord of choices. The long and short of it is people are spoiled. If it ain't perfect, give up on it or don't even try it to start with. If most of these whiners had started wargaming back when I did, they never would have gotten past AH's Stalingrad without whimpering about the lousy graphics. Grow up, folks, go change your diapers and pull out that old game of Chutes and Ladders--lots of pretty colors there!

My point is it's the game play that really counts. This is a good game system that nees some tweaking. Instead of just grabbing the money and heading out-of-town, Matrix and the designer are addressing the concerns and listening to the feedback. The new update will fix the problems and the more mature players will be playing into the early morning hours while the negative nellies out there continue their whining.

Whew! I need to get back to just reading your posts and not responding. Kudos to those of you who work to make a good product great. The rest of you need to go play Canasta for a while.

I've seen enough good comments to be intrigued.  I've seen enough negative comments to be wary.  What would decide it for me would be a playable demo.

I'm pretty much feeling like Ingtar, a demo would be a real help in me deciding to buy this game. From everything I've read it seems to have real potential, but a lot of games had that and still ended up gathering dust on my shelf.

I know Matrix doesn't usually do demos, but I'm hoping they might offer one for this game.

I'll pass ... until the people who bought this game post enough comments to convince me it's actually ready for prime time. It sounds like it could be pretty good once it plays out properly. Not that I'd know, but I always read what people post when I'm interested in a new game, before I take the plunge. It's not just about the money, my wargaming time is also an important factor.

There is much that is left wanting In this game. The basic mechanics are not bad, but the AI is minimal at best - I know it is hard to make a good AI, but why put out a game that isn't really that challenging? Perhaps in time - probably around version 3.5 or so - it may become a decent game - right now it is early beta at best.

I would say WAIT on buying - check back in 6 months or so.

This game looks to me (and I don't own it) from the screenies as more like Global War from SPI than A3R.  There's a very large map that lacks much in the way of road/rail infrastructure, rivers/canals, and other obvious terrains.  It's mostly clear hexes.  At this scale there should have been a LOT of other terrain types.

The same goes for unit types.  There seems to be few choices.  Hence it's more like Global War.

Now that's not necessarily BAD.  Some people will like that while others will hate it.

For me, the BIGGEST turnoff is the look of the map.  The colors are just plain...ugly.  However, not to despair... our very own forumite GJK has already made a great MOD.  He's my map hero.  Now, if we can make a few more mods to the units, and the UI, this one just might make it on my HD. [:D]

I must confess, that's from another game that I'm beta-testing/working up a graphics mod for (Computer War in Europe II), so don't confuse it with this game. That's a tease, I know, but I'm thinking of applying a similar modded look to this game. ;)

ORIGINAL: GJK
(Computer War in Europe II)

Had this game on pre-order forever. Man I hope/wish they can actually finish this someday. Kudos on the graphics if they're yours, they look far superior to the old alpha I saw way back when.

Yes graphics for CWiE2 look very nice. Coastal ports look to be a problem though GJK? Will this be fixed.

Whoa!  If this game had graphics like that it would go a long way to entice many of us to buy it!  I love it!
