RIP Alexander Solzhenitsyn. His books were at least as tough as Thomas Mann's to get through but were likewise as brilliant. In terms of 20th century Russian authors he must be among the top 5.

He tried so hard to be legendary. His entire life was dedicated to being great. He was severe, stern, inwardly turned.

Well. A few million words later, some acknowledged his greatness. Me, I thought he needed to lighten up a little.

He was kind of a Richard Nixon with a bad case of hemorrhoids who knew how to write...

Still, I read and admired his stuff. Russian writers have always been a little turgid. He was far easier to read in the original than in all the horrific English translations.

To be honest I can't comment on the original Russian version but compare his writing to Ayn Rand. Hands down I preferred his process and treatment of the reader. Just as I prefer Camus to Sartre. One shows you to the door and the other pushes you through it.
