That is interesting. I woulda thought the Aussies also used the Sten, but I see they actually had their own model of Owen SMG eh? Learn something everday.

A pair of sandgropers pulling a rag out of tree. Ramu Valley, New Guinea, 21 Oct 1943.

A far superior weapon to the Sten.
Also an interesting story of Mr Owen's stubborness in the face of official lack of interest.

Sure sounds like it was reliable and durable. But I'd think that that top-loading magazine would take some time to get used to, and sighting along the side, I would think that that would intrinsically limit the accuracy of the gun? Not like any SMG is so good for sniping, but sighting along the side!?

I'd be curious to hear what the Grogs on here think were the best small arms devices in WWII. This game doesn't really focus at that level, but something tells me there are plenty of experts on here. [:D]

MG42, hands down.

Keeping the enemy pinned in a dirthole is not a waste of ammunition...

MG42 did have the flexibility to be a light MG, a medium, or heavy depending on the mount and ammo feed.  The replaceable barrels also added to its maintainability in the field.

Though to declare what the best small arms are, you need to define the task.  MG42s are too cumbersome for close in house to house fighting such as seen at Stalingrad.  They also aren't sniper weapons or have much anti-armor capability.

I do think the hands down worst small arm was the Japanese officer hand gun (I forget the designation).  I read an article about it a year or so back.  They are prized collectors items today because they were so awful, the souvenir collectors would throw them away.  If I recall, they had a nasty habit of firing when jarred, even if the safety was on.

Aim an SMG ???

The top mounted magazine allowed the fire to get as close to the ground as possible, it also allowed better movement through Jungle/Scrub.

There is a book, "The Owen Gun trials" which covers the development og the gun.

Well other than playing Call of Duty II I can't say I've ever "aimed" one! [:D] So maybe I'm just talking shit . . .

Here I started a new thread on small arms, with different categories. Given the point about the MG42, maybe I needed to have one additional category of "Machine Gun" included? Maybe the Mg42 was the best machine gun, but comparing it as "best small arms device" against some device that belonged to a very different functional category (a pistol, single-action rifle, etc.) would be kinda silly I guess.

It does kinda fit with the whole Bushido, Kamikazi, honorable suicide warrior theme though [:'(] (oooh, hope that doesn't sound too, eh, "mean?")

wonder if the Allied soldiers shot at by a MG42 gunner thought he would WASTE his ammo... perhaps it wasn´t good for the industry but IMO it was surely the best MG.

Based on what Hans and Mike were saying in that other thread about the BAR being too small to be considered a true machine gun, it sounds like Allied infantry were more suited to mobility tactics and German more suited to immobility?
