1.06 Java fix...no fix

Post by brucertx »

Downloaded and ran the Java fix. Now, rather than just a black screen, I get a black screen with a few moments of music. I'm runiing XP with Service pack 3 installed. This is really very frustarting fellows. A true fix would be appreciated

Same here, except I'm running Vista 32 Home Premium. It worked initially and then didn't. I suspect some Windows updates to be the culprit, but this Java fix didn't help me at all. I get the Quick Start menu, sometimes get as far as selecting my language, and then nothing happens. No freeze, no crash. Just sits there after I click PLAY, without the menu even disappearing.

So far I've had about a 30/70 split between playing and installing-uninstalling-reinstalling this game. It's a shame but I'm about to write this one off as a loss and move on. I'd started working on graphics mods for it too, primarily new general pics like I did for HOI2.

I know what you mean. I'm actually back to ver. 1.0 with limited success. It's very fruatrating. I'm sure good old MS has caused the problem, but it seems to me we deserve some timley, comprehensive and accurate support support from the game designers/retailers. just blaming MS doesn't really cut it. This wasn't exactly a cheap game to purchase and i don't think any of us should have to write it off.

The problem is indeed with an update from Microsoft which broke a previously working game. A further fix is in the works, apologies for the inconvenience!

Well, at least I see I'm not the only one with this problem. Mine is behaving exactly as per the OP. Sure would like to play this again...any news on when we might see an update? It's been a few weeks now since last word.

I know what you mean. Unfortunatley, I'm going to sound like the testy SOB here, but just blaming MS and then leaving everyone hanging simply is not fair or professional. At the very least we should be getting some kind of progress update/s. With this silence, I'm not hopeful that any substantive progress has or will be made.

We're testing the fixes, but have no feedback from people on whether the fixes help yet. As soon as we have something we'll release it to Matrix. We don't post here often as we have our own forum to maintain. If you want to track progress you can view what's happening in our CEAW forum, where there is up to date information, and you can see that the fixes are being tested.

Iain,
Thank you for the update. Possibly some of the confusion for me, and others, is that we purchased our games from Matrix and not Slitherine. I was expecting to be kept up to date by Matrix on status, fixes, patches etc. I don't think it's your job to monitor their forum and answer questions or respond to rants for them from their customers. At the very least, they should have sent us to your webpage. I will keep an eye on your forum for future news.
Many thanks,
Bruce

No problem - its always complex when there is more than one forum and as Matrix is a publisher by nature that happens quite regularly. The problem they have is that until we send them something to send them they have nothing to tell you either really, so it's a joint responsibility. It's just really annoying that this windows update has caused so many problems and we thought we had sorted it but now find it's not working 100% :(

Anyone having problems should download the 1.07 Public beta from the members area. Let us know if it resolves the issues or you still have problems.

Thanks Iain. Unfortunately, I'm still not able to play the game, though I am now getting a little farther along. I get a black screen with music, then I get the Matrix/Slitherine logo screen, then that goes away to another black screen, and then I'm back at my desktop after some brief sound stutter. I have tried this both low res and high res, same thing. Also, just so you know, I am running SP2 not 3, so this was from something that predates the SP3 update.

I'll ask Johan to investiaget but we are trying to master CNAW at the moment so it may take a couple of weeks to get it sorted out.
