RE: THE THREAD!!!
Looks like Georgia and Russia are gonna let the balloon go up. Kinda sad I don't think Ossetia has much thats worth killing over.
RE: THE THREAD!!!
Hi all,
That's a war that was bound to happen... past 15+ years, when it all first began, were just a lull... [:(]

I always hate to see war break out. Especially when it's over what appears to be a relatively minor territorial dispute. [:(]ORIGINAL: Apollo11

I think this is a flawed perspective: for you it is just a minor territorial dispute, but the people and nations involved are fighting for what they consider to be their homeland. Not every conflicts boils down to a fight for land mass, natural resources, or industrial capacity - remember Kosovo Polje.ORIGINAL: niceguy2005

RE: THE THREAD!!!
I'm quite sure the people involved feel that they are talking about their homes, and I don't mean to downplay their situation, but what really happening is that the people that live on this land are becoming pawns in a larger power struggle...and the larger nations involved will not cringe at the thought of spilling those peoples blood to get their way. Cooler heads need to prevail. These things are best settled through arbitration or courts. Such solutions are far better and tend to have a longer lived more lasting impact. Settling it through force of arms usually only lasts until the other side in the conflict rearms and grows a new generation to fight - or god forbid they're wiped out.ORIGINAL: VSWG

I guess my basic point is for all the fighting that goes on in these regional conflicts very little actually gets settled on the battlefield...mostly people just get hurt and families torn apart.[:(]

RE: THE THREAD!!!
Well said. I agree that violence will make the situation only worse. Maybe there's still hope for an internationally accepted referendum...

I just hope that Russia doesn't get any bright ideas after this is over. They ostensibly attacked Georgia "to protect their compatriots" there, and there are Russian minorities in all the other former Soviet republics who are treated badly as well.

Sadly unless Georgia receives a lot of support Russia will prevail. Abkhazia is waiting in the wings. I just pray that some non-military resolution can be found otherwise its all just matches on a gas canister.

RE: THE THREAD!!!
It remains to be seen how far this will escalate, and the Russian army isn't as powerful as it would like us to believe. Remember that they couldn't subdue Chechnya.
