Bombing crash

Post by FeurerKrieg »

Hi all -

I've had a bug in my game that crops up now and again. Occasionally (it doesn't happen every time) when my opponent bombs Johnston Island from Pearl Harbor the game will crash.

It doesn't happen during the defending CAP phase, only when the bombers are dropping bombs. It doesn't matter if animations are turned on or off, either way it will crash.

For a while I though it was because I had a fragment LCU on the island. I removed that unit, and for a long time it didn't seem like there was a problem (I wasn't getting bombed all that often though) but this past turn it happened again. Clearly, my opponent can't just not attack Johnston Island as it is critical base.

If I had to guess I'm thinking either one of my LCU's or one of his bomber units has some bit of info about it corrupted in the save file, but I don't really know. WITPDecoder doesn't indicate anything odd about my units on the island. I haven't tried loading up WITPtracker but I might do that.

1) Has anyone has anything similar happen?
2) Who is the best person to send bug-fix requests to? In the past I've sent stuff to Joe W, but I'm sure he is busy with AE. Is there anyone else that has the ability to take a look at this game?

Thanks!

Additional Info: This is a CHS game, scen 160

This is a long shot, but rename your SOUND-folder to NOSOUND and see if you still crash during the replay.

Thanks, tried that, but still crashed.

We're doing some testing now to see if we can either find the cause or at least figure out a reasonable workaround.

RE: Bombing crash - Update

We are pushing on for now. I ran a bunch of test turns with different bomber units stood down and I can't find a definitive 'bad' air unit, because I think the RND interferes with the experiment if you will. Mind you, I can't say for sure whether this problem is from the Allied bombers or the things they are hitting.

In the process I notice something else that gave me a new hypothesis. No Emily planes were ever damaged or destroyed. Perhaps when one of them was supposed to be destroyed it caused the crash? So I've moved my patrol plane unit off the island and we'll see what happens.

The other thing that seemed to be noticeable, is that odds are a second run, with a different RND seed, will not crash.

So for now we will play on and see what happens.
