Hi,

Just got MCLV, installed over 5.1, including the 7.1 upgrade. Everything seems okay, *except* that at some point during the scenario I get a crash to the main menu screen for SP [where you choose play, exit, etc] and often the colors are weirded out. I then have to reboot, and sometimes the system is frozen.

The crash usually happens during opportunity fire when I hit the yes or no key, though sometimes it occurs during my turn when firing. The larger the scenario, the sooner it happens.

1.2 gig TBird, 256 Megs, TNT2 /64 video, SB ultra, Win98 fully updated, and all drivers are current.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best,

Can you run down the installations again, I want to be sure I point you in the right direction. You installed 5.1 from the MCNA CD, was the the first install of SPWAW or an installation over an exisiting version, and then what? If you only patched up to 7.1 then it sounds like you need the updated stereo sound files, but I want to be sure before I go any further.

Hi,

I installed 5.0 from disk, patched to 5.2 + DF patch, installed 7.0 from disk, then patched to 7.1 + LV patch.

Thanks,

Dondo: First let me say welcome aboard. I think I know your problem. The sequence for updating from 5.01 is to 5.2 then to 6.1 then 6.x to 7.0. You can find all this by going to The Armour Site which you should be able to get to from banner in Gman's answer. HTH:)

When you did the 7.0 install from the LV CD, did you choose full install or the install LV option which in turn is just importing LV into you existing version of SPWAW. If you chose full install this install full version of SPWAw 7.0 and LV, which means your sound files have been updated. Is 7.1 displayed at the bottom of the screen when you start SPWAW? Try these tips, try running SPWAW directly from the mech.exe file located in the MatrixGames\SPWAW directory, this bypasses the autorun menu. Make sure you disable all programs running in the backgraound before running SPWAW, because of it's old game code it uses 100% CPU resources. How much free Hard Drive space is left on your drive, for a Windows Swap file. Go into the MatrixGames\SPWAW\save directry and delete the steel.prf and holder.txt (if you have one) files. When you restart SPWAW and adjust anything in the preference screen the steel.prf file will be recreated, the holder.txt is useless but has possed some problems for others in the past. If this doesn't work, turn of all sounds in SPWAW via the preference screen and see if this helps any. Please keep us informed

Chief:

Yikes! You mean I have to download the six versions even though I bought the 7.0 disk? I am still cursed with a 56k modem, which is one reason I purchased rather than downloaded.

As for the stereo files, is this the LV patch? When I read the description, it seemed to apply only to the sound files for the MC which I haven't gotten to yet. Is this going to apply to the scenarios as well?

Gmen:

yes, I did a full install, don't run anything else, and have plenty of HD space. Will try the other suggestions.

Thank you kindly.

The stereo files I was refering too, came about after all full versions of SPWAW v5.3. All the sounds were reworked and retooled to be set to a common bit rate for all sounds cards to relate with. The older versions of SPWAW had many sounds that were done in bit rates unfamilar to several sound cards which caused crashes. With all full version of SPWAW 5.3 and later these newer stereo sounds are all included as part of the installation routine. The LV sound patch is just that, updated sounds for the LV MegaCampaign to enhance the gaming experience, this is new and a totally different entity from the normal SPWAW game sounds, it is not required but recommended. I hope this clears it up a little further. Good luck.

Hokay, I went and uninstalled everything, and just installed 7.0 [+LVMC] and upgraded to 7.1. Everything seems just ducky--'ceptin' gettin' my lunch handed to me.

Soooo... am I missing anything by doing it this way, and can I still install Desert Fox?

Thanks again for your time and help. Greatly appreciated.

If you have the time and patience, this is what you need to do. Uninstall everything again, install MCNA first, then 7.0 from the LV CD then upgrade to 7.1 and then install Mega patches. The moment you install MCNA it's going to downgrade your SPWAW version to 5.x no matter what. When it was designed the import the Mega only option was never concieved. Don't forget when intalling the 7.1 upgrade to remove the space between Matrix Games (MatrixGames) in the installation path or the patch will be installed to the wrong directory and not properly upgrading SPWAW. I will walk you through this if you run into problems.
