Weirdest Long Campaign Battle Ever

Post by KG Erwin »

I launched another USMC campaign starting in August 1942. I drew a delay mission in my first battle (Tenaru, Aug 15). It lasted 37 turns, and the Japanese infantry NEVER ATTACKED. They did launch a bombardment, and I was bombed by a couple of planes. That was it. The only attacker to appear was a lone sniper, who was dispatched by a machine gun.

I checked the map at the end of the battle, and the enemy's infantry was stacked at the edge of the map -- they never moved. Their artillery was correctly placed and dispersed, though.

I've never seen the enemy decide to call off an attack in such a fashion. I got a Decisive Victory by doing nothing except launching counterbattery fire, which caused 17 casualties. I lost 70 men and a mortar due to enemy artillery/air strikes.

Have any of you ever seen an event like this? Just when I thought the long campaigns were predictable, I get a surprise.

In some strange way, I'm thinking that the Japanese elected to stay put and let ME attack THEM in the next fight. Sure enough, my next mission will be an advance.

PS IF this odd behavior is a glitch, then perhaps it's time for me to delete my steel.prf file and reset it.

Erwin,

Yes, I think it's a glitch and that you should reset your steel.prf file.

Glenn....I know you remember years ago there had been a glitch that caused stuff like this on a rare basis,(had something to do with the direction the enemy AI thought was the objective, IIRC.
Well, a patch released years ago took care of that problem,(IIRC).
Recently, I downloaded a "expired cookie removal tool", and it did get rid of old cookies, but also wiped out saved turns in my WITP campaign games as well as patches, apparently!!.
Is it possible you might have recently downloaded some kind of "janitorial device"?
