12 Dec (Hawaii Time) 13 December (Tokyo)

The night turn began with CA Kinugasa hitting a mine at Legaspi - and it inflicted terrible damage

AK Don Jose hit a mine at Singapore

USS Sturgeon missed an AP at Bako. There are 28 AS units there - so it will get a warm response.

4 old Ise class battleships and escorts sank AK Morizan several hundred miles East of the Philippines.

Ro 62 foolishly attacked - and missed - an SC unit at Batavia. Then it missed an AK.

I-6 torpedoed, shelled and sank AP Mount McKinley near Hawaii - and there were troops on board - 54 lost.

Unopposed landings occurred at Tarawa and Chiang Mai

I-2 took 2 hits from 3 Canadian AS units at the entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca

The day turn begain with 3 ROCAF B-10s inflicting 11 casualties on the 2nd Mountain Gun Regiment in Northern Indochina.

2 JAAF attacks caused 11 casualties and 1 gun lost, and 4 casualties and 2 guns lost to the 88th Field Army. Two more caused 8 and 0 casualties to the Hopei Militia Regiment.

6 Ki-30s out of Singora failed to harm the ISF 3rd Forward Air Station. Then 15 Ki-48s and 27 Ki-27s caused 32 casualties to the same unit. This prepratory to ground assault at Kota Bahru.

3 Beauforts out of Rabaul hit AO Ondo at Kavieng with one 250 pound bomb - but it did horrible damage - aided by fuel fires. They then missed an AK inbound to Kavieng. I diverted it to Hollandia - lacking the ability to cover Kavieng or to attack Rabaul at this time.

8 Betys out of Cagayan sank 2 AKs with 3 torpedoes at San Jose Mindoro

KB sent 144 Vals at Midway - 7 were lost - entirely to AA fire - 3 B-20s destroyed on the ground indicating the PBYs had withdrawn -
70 other airbase related hits.

6 Blenheims missed an AK and escort in the South China Sea

4 Kates put 2 250 kg bombs into AK San Quentin East of the Philippines

2 ASW units at Batavia failed to hit Ro-62 in an ASW attack

Guam fell to the second attack by the Imperial Guards Brigade

39 000 Japanese attacked 26 000 Chinese on the Rail line East of Shanghai - where an additional Field Army showed up - and failed to achieve odds - 995 to 191 casualties in spite of strong air support.

An unintended bombardment attack at HK resulted in 5 Japanese casualties
- one regiment attacked alone -

A naval landing force took undefended Ilagan Luxon - putting its rich resources on the Japanese side. We sent the 48th Brigade along the coast - because he has strongly defended Baguio - which it won't be able to capture - being mountains - so we will flank it.

27 000 Chinese bombarded 31 000 Japanese at Nanchang - and inflicted 15 Japanese casualties

Allied bombardment of Sinyang was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Toungoo of airborne caused the unit not to move in spite of orders - but no casualties

A preliminary assault on Kota Bahru - only ordered for the leading armor unit - was unexpectedly joined by artillery units newly arrived - and achieved 3:1 odds - capturing the base on the first try - before the infantry caught up. 1 vincent destroyed on the ground, 9048 casualties,
1044 vehicles lost. The supply sink did not delay the loss at all.

An attack on the much bombed Hopei Militia Regiment by a third of a division achieved 3:1 odds - but ONLY cost Japanese casualties - the Chinese held the position with no losses - 19 casualties and 2 guns lost. I love RHS Chinese guerilla regiments - but this is the best of them.

For some reason a brigade attacked Khorat Thailand - with "0 troops, 0 guns and 0 vehicles" - and captured it. Not sure what that means - given there was a whole bridade present after the turn was over. Some kind of reporting bug?

Undefended Tarawa and Chiang Mai fell to shock attacks by minor forces.

The troops that "disappeared" at Magwe still exist - and were attacked - and took 11 casualties and 1 gun lost - so he still is getting no supplies or oil there. They are now visible again - and orderd to walk out.

Poly has returned from vacation

13 Dec (Hawaii) 14 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with I-174 being hounded - and hit - by 6 AS units near Oahu

Then Dutch sub KXVII shelled, torpedoed and sank AP Kaihei Maru in the Gulf of Thailand

[Is this an Allied turn???]

Ro-64 torpedoed - and probably caused the sinking of - AK Don Jose at Singapore - with 2 fish

[Guess not]

USN S-39 got hit twice by 6 AS units at Legaspi

[Definitely not]

I-158 torpedoed, shelled and sank AK Churucca at Sinkap Island NEI

I-162 torpedoed TK Agwiworld at Jahore Bahru

USS Triton was missed by 3 AS units at Kwajalein

Ro-64 was missed by 1 AS unit at Singapore

The day turn began with 2 JAAF strikes on the ROC 88th Field Army causing 14 and 0 casualties - with 1 Ki-36 lost.
Two more on the Hopei 49th Field Army caused 59 casualties and 1 gun lost, 13 casualties and 2 guns lost, respectively.
Another on the Hipei Militia Regiment caused 8 casualties.

3 Beaufort out of Rabaul hit AO Ondo with a 250 pound bomb. This seems trivial. But a similar hit on the same ship yesterday
(at Kavieng) set her oil cargo on fire. She ran for Truk - and now is not likely to make it.

8 Vildebeeste missed an AV and a DD in the South China Sea. 2 more missed AK Sanwa Maru. 5 more put 1 bomb into AK Hikosan Maru and missed AP Nihonkai Maru.

17 Ki-21s out of Pisanoluke Thailand put on 50 kg bomb each into 2 river transport units in Burma. 4 Nells out of Bangkok missed a river tanker in the same area (on the Irrawaddy River) later in the day. Later still 15 Ki-21s and 6 Nells ganged up on 3 more river transports, torpedoing one and bombing another with 3 50 kg bombs - missing the third altogether.

1 Kate missed badly damaged AK San Quentin East of the Philippines. Later she ran into the Main Body (4 Ise class BB, both Kitakami class torpedo cruisers, 2 escorts) - and was sunk by them (25 shell hits, no surprise there).

2 Blenheims missed AP Haisho Maru in the Celebes Sea. 3 more missed AK Africa Maru in the same area.

I-174 was attacked and missed by 6 AS units at PH

10 Japanese DD at Singora detected, localized, attacked and hit Dutch sub KXII. 6 more DD and a PC unit of 2 vessels missed USN S-39 at Legaspi.

S-41 - in the Philippine Sea - torpedoed AO Iro - 2 fish - she is not likely to survive. She must have been sent there due to recon reports - this is far from any base. The tanker was refueling and rearming many warships that were hunting the ships that fled East from the Philippines - I think all of them are now sunk.

Ground combat on the Road West of Ningpo achieved 0:1 odds - 5200 Japanese vs 7800 Chinese - but inflicted 263 casualties and 9 guns lost vs 80 casualties and 7 guns lost- indicating the position is weak. This is technically a brigade picking on a Field Army of 2 divisions.

Lucena - next to Manila - fell undefended to a 30,554 man divisional assault.

21 000 Japanese attacked 25 000 Allies at Alor Star - achieved 17:1 odds - and captured the base on the first assault. 3 Blenheim I were destroyed on the ground. 13, 436 Allied casualties and 2093 vehicles lost. Once again - we see the presence of a supply sink cannot have delayed the dall of the city. Nor caused any casualties: there were ZERO Japanese losses. The position had been weakened by air strikes.

Chinese bombardment at Nanchang Central China caused 21 casualties and 1 gun lost

23 000 Chinese at Sinyang attacked 6778 Japanese - achieved 2:1 odds - causes 112 casualties, 2 guns lost and 4 vehicles lost for Japan to 252 casualties and 8 guns lost for China.

Ground assault on airborne remnants at Toungoo Burma caused 22 Allied casualties for Japan - but cost 45 casualties - both sides lost 1 gun.
A similar attack on a unit with "0 troops, 0 guns and 0 vehicles" cost nothing at Magwe. Not sure what that means????

Ground assault on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 21 Japanese to 95 Allied casualties - but the unit failed to retreat or surrender - after days of combat and air strikes.

Khoan Khen central Thailand fell undefended to the Japanese.

14 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 15 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn opened with an ASW attack by 14 units near Northern Luzon. For some reason - there were 17 units available - code limited an ASW TF to this size - so I created another one for the other 3 - and kept them closer to Bako. This group had many failed detections, several detections and attacks, and only one hit on USS Salmon.

USN SS Seal shelled and torpedoed TK Manju Maru South of Honshu

3 IJN MSW units cleared mines at Legaspi

USN DD Pillsbury and PG Napa detected a mine field at the entrance to Manila Bay

USN SS Searaven missed an AK at Palau

A Japanese landing occurred at Luoag Luzon - mainly because of a sub and mines at Aparri - we have dispatched AS and MS units to address this soon - and have many AS air patrols in the area. But AP Aiyo Maru hit a mine anyway. There were seperate losses of 162, 31 and 61 casalties - probably night landing, mine damage, and day landing results.

Dutch sub KXIII torpedoed AP Hokuhi Maru in the Gulf of Thailand. Poly uses his subs more aggressively than other players. Subs were detected in the Bohei Gulf, the Sea of Japan, and South of Honshu - the Philippine Sea - at Palau - Kwajalein - Wake and Johnston. All of these in addition to the more traditional deployments in the South China Sea and immediate Philippine waters.

An AS group at Bako detected a minefield. Poly also uses subs to deliver mines more often that most players. Both attack and mine missions badly mess up Japanese operations - and cause supply expensive AS operations - in addition to obvious damage and sinkings.

Ro-34 torpedoed AK Agnita between Borneo and Celebes.

The day turn began with a raid by 9 B-17s on Johnston Island out of Oahu. 3 Runway hits.

3 Beauforts - for the third day in a row - put a 250 pound bomb into AO Ondo. Its survival is gravely in doubt - and it is 99 per cent system damaged - but not yet near sinking.

8 Vildebeeste out of Southern Malaya put a bomb each into 2 APs near Saigon. This is the same hex a sub torpedoed a ship in. It is amazing that this area - which has not before been hit - got attacked several times this turn. Presumably the sub gave contact data to the air base. Later 5 more missed 2 more APs in the same force.

20 Bettys went into Manila after a DD and 2 PGs - missed them all - but lost one of their number to 10 P-40s on CAP.

11 Bettys escorted by 18 Zeros torpedoed AK Ethel Edwards - which later sank. Covered by 9 P-35s out of Cebu - 3 were shot down.

RO-33 missed at TK South of Singapore

31 000 Japanese at the salient at Nanchang China attacked 28 000 Chinese - failed to drive the intruders from the Japanese base hex - 857 casualties, 34 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost to 625 casualties and 30 guns lost for the Chinese.

A Japanese brigade attacked two Chinese guerilla regiments - and forced them to retreat in Eastern China. They joined a third adjacent to ROC lines.

A Japanese brigade attacked two Chinese guerilla regiments - and forced them to retreat in Eastern China. They joined a third adjacent to ROC lines.

43 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Chinese at Hong Kong - which is still at its starting (Level 5) fortifications - and once again failed to reduce them. This is a very unusual game - Hong Kong is standing strong. 524 casualties and 25 guns lost to 124 casualties and 5 guns lost.

2 IJA units of regiment and brigade size attacked and caused the surrender of the elite Hopei Militia Regiment. 23 to 1890 casualties and 4 guns lost. The regiment had been pounded for many days by air and land.

2200 Japanese attacked the remnants of a Philippine battalion at Luoag - less than 200 men - and forced them to retreat down the East side of Luzon

29 000 Chinese attacked less than 9000 Japanese at Sinyang - failed to take the hex but reduced fortifications to 1 - 301 to 240 casualties - but the Allies lost 14 guns in the effort to only 1 Japanese.

Allied ground bombardment at Wuchang was not effective.

15 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 16 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with a failed ASW attack by 7 units on USN SS Permit at Bako. 3 others failed to hit SS Salmon at Aparri. They repeated this miss later in the night.

Another ASW group - returning to Bako to refuel - encountered sub laid mines - PC Shirataka hit one -
and a number of mines were also cleared

6 USN AS units hit I-3 4 times - in Hawaiian waters. She is on fire and badly damaged.

We spotted an AK at San Fernando yesterday - ran in a cruiser destroyer group - and sank AK Anshun with 44 shell hits.
CA Mogami and Mikuma, CL Isuzu and 3 DD did the deed.

USN PG Genessee ran in on transports at Aparri- ran into 3 DD on ASW duty - and got sunk. But DD Uranami hit a mine during the fight.

USS Pickeral missed an AK North of Luzon.

5 AS units missed Dutch KCIII in the Gulf of Thailand

The day turn began with 7 B-17s attacking Johnston Island - scoring 1 runway hit.

The 144th Regimental Combat Team (Nanyo Detachment) and 4 damaged Mavis flying boats are stranded here. We are assembling a TF to go in - covered by KB - to pick them up - and leave some tiny defense force behind. We intend to proceed to Midway from there. Poly is confused why the carriers are retiring West - but it is both to refuel (done) and meet up with other ships (not done).

A JAAF attack on the ROC 86th field army at Sinyang caused 18 casualties. Another on the ROC 51st Guerilla Regiment caused 26.

3 B-17s and 3 A-20s out of Midway missed ML Aikoku Maru South of the island. She is trying to refuel. She is the only survivor of her 3 ship class which went out on recon missions hunting the USN carriers and other ships near Hawaii. 3 B-17s missed her again later.

20 Nells and 18 Zeros missed 3 small warships at Manila. 27 P-40s were on CAP. 3 were destroyed. 1 Nell and 1 Zero were lost.

4 ROCAF SB-2s missed a DD at Bako. 30 Ki-27s were on CAP. 2 bombers were lost.

IJA bombardment at Nanchang caused 12 Allied casualties. IJA bombardment at HK caused 5 casualties and 1 gun lost.

Allied bombardment at Nanchang caused 6 casualties and 1 vehicle lost

Allied shock attack by 43 000 Chinese at Sinyang captured the hex from 15 000 Japanese. 463 casualties, 11 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost for Japan, 888 casualties and 26 guns lost for China. The offensives in Central China are a problem - so we are concentrating to attack to break out of the now Wuhan pocket - and to secure the Rail LOC west from Shanghai - and others from East China. He is almost removed from rear areas - and so the foundation exists to move West in force. Ships are feeding the pocket. It is clear China should engage - IJA is too spread out to be effective.

16 Dec (Hawaii) 17 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with DD Oboro detecting mines at Laoag Luzon

SS Saury missed an AP near Northern Luzon

S-41 was detected by BB Fuso and BB Hyuga - but not successfully engaged by them

SS Seawolf shelled, torpedoed and no doubt sank AK Meiko Maru at Aparri

Poly is one of the few players to use submarines and mines properly - and sometimes it pays off directly - as above - more often by causing inefficiency - as I avoid his subs and spend supply points on planes hunting them in numbers

DD Pillsbury shelled the Japanese division at Manila - without effect. Thats right - at Manila. We came in by the back door - and are preventing the industry and resource centers there from generating supplies - but not attacking. Wisely - he also is not attacking - as that would only eat supply points faster.

I-168 was engaged by 6 DD near Oahu - apparently the TF chased it as it ran for Kwajalein. Fortunately - this time they missed.

3 IJN MSW units swept the field at Aparri - where landings continue.

3 IJN ASW units (a DD, a PC and an APD) engaged Dutch KXVI North of Laoag - hitting it twice. This was an unusual success - but Japanese AS units are gaining experience because of the intense AS campaign.

SS Spearfish shelled, torpedoed and sank AK Tetsuzan at Port Arthur - at the entrance to the Bohai Gulf - in spite of massive AS air patrols from upwards of ten air bases in the area.

The day turn began with a raid on Rangoon by 30 Ki-51s, 13 Ki-27s and 4 Ki-15 recon planes out of Tavoy Burma. 4 Buffalos met on CAP: 4 Ki-51s lost to AAA. 1 Buffalo shot down. 1 P-40B destroyed on the ground. 3 casualties, 22 other airbase hits. 35 Ki-21s came in immediatly afterward and put a 50 kg bomb into TK Empire Trinity in port - and causing 10 other hits. 3 Buffalos on CAP but no losses in the air to either side.

21 Nells raided Rabaul and put an 800 kg bomb into AK Malaita in port, and causing 1 other port hit. 3 bombers damaged by AAA.

60 B-17s of 2 types raided Johnston Island - causing 21 airbase related hits. One reason for this (low number of hits for so many bombs dropped) is they came in high - from 15 000 feet all the way up to 27 000 feet.

A JAAF attack on the ROC 20th Field Army caused 48 casualties and 2 guns lost.

7 Vildebeeste torpedo bombers missed 2 DD at Singora - none were lost to 3 Ki-43 and 2 Pete on CAP - nor to AA. They tried again later with even less success - CA Chokai shot down 4 of them.

2 B-17s and 2 A-20s out of Midway missed ML Aikoku South of that island - just like yesterday. 2 A-20s tried and failed again later.

23 Ki-21s sank AK Mandalay with 2 bombs at Hinzada. This is a small river transport - and later raiders could not find the target any more.

5 IJN DD and 1 PC unit at Laoag detected, localized, attacked and hit S-36. They repeated this process later in the day.

An RN DMS unit missed Ro-64 at Singapore

38 000 Japanese troops attacked 26 000 Chinese West of Shanghai on the main rail line. They failed to achieve odds - 373 casualties and 36 guns lost to the Allies 157 casualties and 3 guns lost. We are rotating units to try again in two days. Problems in Central China are compounded by the failure to clear the rail lines in the East.

Japanese bombardment at Nanchang caused 4 Allied casualties. A similar attack at HK was not effective. Nothing in China is going very well. Supplies are running low at Canton. Allied bombardment at Nanchang caused 7 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost - also 22 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.

Allied bombardment of an airborne detachment at Toungoo Burma was ineffective. Japanese infantry is on the main line East of Rangoon - running for Toungoo to relieve these troops which are unable to disengage due to these bombardment attacks. We will attempt to isolate Rangoon before reducing it - using airborne - of course. Troops are airlifting in to Moulmein - and we hope to complete the conquest of Burma before it should have begun - after the fall of Singapore. Coming in early permits small forces the opportunity for great success. Fighting is smarter than running - although it does not seem so to the Allies. The Fall of Burma means China loses its 500 point per day Burma Road bonus - and that Japan is in a position to threaten India before defense can be built up.

17 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 18 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with an unsuccessful IJN ASW attack on SS Seawolf at Aparri - with 6 units. This got worse - PC Ch 4 & Ch 5 was damaged by a minefield.

Another AS unit detected mines at Laoag - but didn't hit any. Then a MSW TF arrived to begin to clear them. Then a different AS unit in the same hex tried to get S-36. This ten unit TF probably sucked up ops points from the sub making it less likely to attack.

An Allied TF of 3 CA and 2 CL bombarded Johnston Island. This was more daring then they know - if it happened a couple of days later the TF would have met the KB - refueling and reinforcing to the NW of there. 355 casualties and 12 guns lost - a strange outcome - no hits of the usual kind. A CD unit fired 105 shots - and scored hits on all 5 ships - setting both CL on fire - a total of 45 hits - 7 to 12 hits per ship.

Landings continued at Davao - 4 shots were fired but missed - 201 Japanese casualties. The next round had no shots fired. The next round had 70 shots fired - scoring 7 hits on PG Uji - and inflicted 394 casualties on the Japanese. Also 15 Allied casualties.

The MSW TF that swept Laoag returned to Aparri - detected and attacked - and missed - SS Seawolf.

The day turn began with 35 Ki-21s and 31 Ki-43s. 6 fighters of 2 types on CAP: 2 were lost - as were 2 bombers. 18 port related hits.

11 B-17s raided Johnston Island causing 40 casualties and 3 guns lost. 50 more raided right after - causing 74 more casualties and 1 gun lost.

A JAAF raid on the Hopei 49th Field Army causing 66 casualties and 5 guns lost.

3 B-17s attacked the 1st Raiding Brigade in Burma - without effect.

6 Nells sank Commonwealth River Tanker No 6 at Hinzada Burma.

79 000 Japanese attacked 24 000 Chinese at Wuchang - failed to achieve odds - and suffered 1779 casualties - 61 guns losst and 1 vehicle lost. 233 Allied casualties, 13 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost. I neither agree with this outcome - nor care - the units were executing a logistic trap - and I must build the LOC before contesting Wuhan. This is the worst campaign in China - because of bad luck in die rolls and because of contested LOC - which few players do. The Japanese have no business so deep in China without a secure LOC.

An LOC clearing attack by 5133 Japanese vs 7489 Chinese achieved 2:1 odds - cost 22 Japanese casualties and 2 guns lost - but forced the larger Chinese force to retreat. Why is this attack 2:1 - and the above one - with 3:1 superiority in numbers and far more in guns - a 0:1 ???
Strange combat system.

A small Japanese artillery unit caused 40 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Allies at Nanchang. This is a point where we are moving forces to fight - as well as the rail line to it. A large Allied bombardment in the same place caused 10 Japanese casualties.

Another attack at HK failed - in spite of 3:1 actual superiority - and the fort level remains high. 414 Japanese casualties, 18 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost to 74 Allied casualties and 6 guns lost. This is the worst performance for HK ever. But it must be running out of supplies.

Allied bombardment at Wuchang was ineffective. Yeah - right - the same force that won a decisive battle above.

Allied bombardment of a tiny airborne force at Toungoo Burma was ineffective. Again - strange.

Massive Allied bombardment at Manila caused 12 casualties.

Allied bombardment at Davao was ineffective.

18 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 19 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with continuing landings at Davao - opposed by Dutch sub KXVIII - mines and 8 CD shots - 31 Japanese casualties. DM Naryu tried to attack the sub - but missed. Then escorts for the CVE group tried - and while 8 DD and CA Nachi missed - CA Maya hit her. Unfortunately not badly enough.

9 ASW units attacked S-36 at Loaog - without hitting her. He is not smart enough to withdraw subs that have been slightly damaged - so they get easier to hit - as we will see.

A DMS attacked Ro-64 at Singapore - but missed.

Unescorted battleships Tennessee, Nevada and Oklahoma shelled Johnston Island. This is getting interesting - he is at serious risk of getting hurt - but seems to think the IJN has retired. Refueled, major forces are about a day out of relieving this position. Maybe he is lucky? If he did this a day or two later it would have been fatal. But it still may be: we will see. 351 casualties, 8 guns lost - most of this to the CD unit - which did its job - 25 shots fired - 10 hits - pretty good.

DD Pillsbury kept up ineffective naval bombardment at Manila.

8 ASW units hit USS Seawolf 4 times at Aparri. This sub should have withdrawn - but didn't - and this is an effect of that. It had been both located and damaged in previous turns.

MSW detected mines at Kwajalein - and cleared some of them.

One Allied and one IJN tanker sank from flooding out. This included the unlucky Ondo - which suffered 500 pound bomb hits three days in a row from tiny strikes out of Rabaul.

A DD found mines at Saigon. He loves to lay mines - and offensively deploy subs - just as I do.

SS Sargo torpedoed AO San Clemente Maru at Genzan Korea!!!

S-36 shelled an AK at Laoag - but missed with torpedoes.

Dutch sub KXV torpedoed and sank AE Kashino at Davao - also it missed a transport. The AE was present by mistake - and we no longer have an AE at Palau (so the AE at Saipan is moving forward to perform the function).

The day turn began with 35 Ki-21s and 31 Ki-43s attacking Rangoon. 4 fighters of 2 types on CAP were ineffective but survived by bugging out. 22 hits. 1 bomber damaged by AAA.

29 B-17s bombarded the Yokosuka 6th SNLF at Johnston Island causing 72 casualties, 2 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost.

6 ROCAF SB-2s attacked 39th Division in China - without effect.

A JAAF raid on the Philippine 51st Division caused 29 casualties and 2 guns lost. This unit prooved to be effective in spite of this raid.

3 Vildebeeste missed a DD at Singora

3 Beaufort out of Rabaul missed a DD NE of Kavieng

3 Hudsons missed an AP in the Gulf of Thailand

Dutch KXV was attacked but missed at Davao by an unspecified AS unit

Japanese bombardment at Nanchang Central China was ineffective - so was Allied bombardment
Japanese bombardment at HK caused 10 casualties and 1 gun lost
Allied bombardment at Wuchang was ineffective

14 000 Japanese troops at Maubon Bay - in a reversal of history - failed to capture it from Philippine 51st Division with only 6855 men (reinforced too). 413 Japanese casualties and 9 guns lost to 141 Filipino casualties, 4 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost. These troops marched overland rather than landing on the beach - arrived in a cohesive formation - but were still ineffective. However - the location will no longer produce Allied supplies - so the main purpose is served.

A Naval landing party (which came overland from Aparri) chasing the 12th Philippine Battalion ejected it from Laoag - causing 7 casualties to the 125 remaining troops.

37 000 Japanese attacked 800 Allies in central Malaya - achieved 1:1 odds - and suffered 613 casualties, 23 guns lost and 2 vehicles lost to 78 Allied casualties and 5 guns lost. Even so - the units were not demoralized and - reinforced - will attack again tomorrow. Note the lack of a supply sink did not prevent an effective defense vs first line combined arms Japanese troops.

6300 Japanese attacked 3500 Filipinos at Davao. 2:1 odds, fortifications reduced to zero. 149 Japanese casualties and 4 guns lost, 37 Filipino casualties and 2 guns lost. This position should fall tomorrow.

22 000 Japanese captured Georgetown (and Penang) Malaya - from the two static units - the military one and the supply sink - on the first assault. 115 Japanese casualties and 6 guns lost to 17,737 Allied casualties, 9 guns lost and 2293 vehicles lost. Note the supply sink did not cause any significant impact.

2200 Allied troops attacked what they thought was a Japanese airborne fragment at Toungoo Burma. Instead they engaged a demi brigade of 3200 10 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost to 95 Allied casualties and 6 guns lost. The airborne are moving down the rail line to Moulmein. The brigade split and came up that line - but half turned to move on Rangoon.

Allied bombardment at Manila was ineffective. So was Allied bombardment at Davao.

19 Dec (Hawaii/Central Pacific Time) 20 Dec (Tokyo/Manila Time) 1941

The night turn began with two ASW groups engaging USS Salmon (1 hit) and USS S-38 (3 hits) North of Luzon.

An Allied MSW TF detected - and swept - mines at Merak/Serang.

Dutch sub KXV was detected by BB Fuso at Davao - but not damaged by it (the BB lacking AS weapons).

USS Salmon - in spite of being damaged on its inbound run - continued to Bako (the Pescadores) and torpedoed AK Sanko Maru.

USS Permit attacked and missed MSW at Legaspi.

S-35 was attacked and missed by the escorts of a detached division of KB. KB had run through the night at high speed to intercept a division of BB retiring from bombardment of Johnston Island - but Shokaku and Akagi had followed at cruising speed - due to system damage considerations. 2 CA and 7 DD attacked the sub - all withtout success.

The Main Body (all four old BB) shelled Davao - hitting AVD William B Preston twice - causing heavy damage. 145 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 9 other hits on the ground.

I-21 was attacked and hit by 4 subs near Hawaii.

A Dutch MSW TF cleared mines at Batavia.

CA Maya and 8 DD - escorts of the CVE force - unsuccessfully attacked Dutch KXV at Davao.

The day turn began with 37 Ki-21s and 31 Ki-43s raiding Rangoon. They met 1 Buffalo and 4 AVG P-40s on CAP - and shot down the Buffalo and 2 P-40s. 11 port related hits on the ground.

6 ROC SB-2s failed to damage the IJA 39th Division in China.

16 P-26s failed to damage the IJA 16th Division at Manila.

6 B-17s failed to damage the Wojte CD Regiment at Johnston Island.

6 Ki-30s (escorted by 16 Ki-43s) caused 18 casualties to the Jitra Brigade (reinforced) in Central Malaya.
16 Ki-21s and 40 Ki-48s caused 52 more casualties to the same unit immediately afterward.

10 Ki-36s caused 28 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Philippine Army 51st Division on Luzon.

3 B-17s attacked KB - met 22 Zeros and 3 Petes on CAP - and failed to penetrate. 1 B-17 lost. These were ahead of the pack.
13 B-17s, 3 B-18s and 3 A-20s were the main strike - they met the same CAP - and damaged 4 Zeros. 1 A-20 was lost and 1 B-17 was damaged. Most of the bombers bugged out. Only AV Kinugasa Maru was attacked - and missed. The AV was in a seperate TF in the KB hex.

BBs Nevada, Oklahoma and Tennessee - escorted by DD Jarvis - were hit by the first strike of the day from the main part of the KB (Nagumo had judged four CV were enough to run ahead - and it is just as well they ran fast: Kimmel detected the force and they were running at full speed to the SE - and were covered by fighters from the Big Island of Hawaii). 50 carrier bombers (half of them Kates, half Vals) escorted by 13 Zeros came in - met 2 P-36A Mohowks on LRCAP - and shot down 1. The other P-36 shot down a Val. AAA shot down 2 of the Kates - but it wasn't enough. All four ships took 250 kg bomb hits, Nevada took 2 fish and Oklahoma took 1. Tennessee was badly damaged by penetrating 250 kg bombs, and Oklahoma by its single torpedo, but Nevada was only set on fire by 3 bombs and 2 torpedoes.

A straggler strike by 17 Vals and 2 Zeros came in - and the one remaining P-36 was shot doen - by a Val. It got 2 of the Vals - that is - counting the first strike - one P-36 got 3 Vals - pretty fair shooting. Oklahoma and Tennessee shared five 250 kg bomb hits - which didn't help them any. Both were already badly damaged - but this didn't help any.

9 Nells out of Cagayan put a torpedo into AK Governor Wright at San Jose (Mindoro). 4 Zeros escorted.
6 more Nells - and a generous 22 Zeros - went into Manila - and put one fish each into PG Napa and PG Mindinao. 12 P-40s on CAP - 2 of which were destroyed. The rest bugged out. 1 Nell damaged by AA fire.

4 Beauforts out of Rabaul missed CL Kashima - leading an invasion group to that town. It is interesting they stayed there - it may be the enemy does not understand Rabaul is no longer safe.

The PM air turn began with a massive attack on Kinagawa Maru (in the KB hex) out of Oahu: no less than 26 B-17s and 18 SBDs - also 6 A-20s - engaged. Only 3 Petes were on CAP - and they achieved nothing. The SBDs put three 500 pound bombs into the target.

KB sent an afternoon follow up strike vs the battleship division - 19 Kates, 42 Vals and 35 Zeros. They met 2 fresh P-36s on LRCAP out of Hawaii - probably Hilo. They shot 1 down - and the other one got a Val (history repeating itself - see above). Tennessee took 5 fish and Oklahoma 3 more - they also shared 8 bombs - and of course - combined with previous damage - were in a bad way. Two of the three BB sank immediately - and the third is likely to be scuttled or to flood out. Her only hope of beating fires and flooding is to run in on PH - and we put a sub in her path just in case.

We think we spotted the enemy carriers NW of PH - so we surrounded them with subs that carry recon planes - and are going to reunite the KB -and refuel it - in the hope we might engage them. The "carriers" may turn out to be cruisers or another division of battleships - they are reported as "2 CA"

USS Sargo missed an AK at Genzen (Chosen = Korea).

Japanese bombardment at Nanchang, China caused 31 casualties and 1 gun lost.
Allied bombardment caused 9 casualties in reply at the same location.
Allied bombardment at Wuchang caused 3 casualties.

36 000 Japanese attacked 8 000 Allies in central Malaya - achieved 5:1 odds - and caused them to retreat to the coast. Only 1 unit is in the hex ahead on the Central RR line. Malaya is being split open. 264 Japanese casualties, 7 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost to 231 Allied casualties and 11 guns lost.

6500 Japanese attacked 3200 Filipinos at Davao - achieved 1:1 odds - and reduced fortifications to zero. 84 Japanese casualties and 3 guns lost. 103 Filipino casualties and 2 guns lost.

Allied bombardment at Manila was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Davao was ineffective.

3200 Japanese attacked 2500 Allies at Toungoo Burma - achieved 10:1 odds - and the defenders retreated. 24 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. 20 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost.
