"Air mission canceled ..." & TF detection

Post by CO Oliver »

Hi,

why do I get the message "air mission canceled - bad weather" for enemy air-missions? Why should I know that the enemy had planned and canceled an air mission because of bad weather?

I even got this message once for an enemy air-mission from an CV-TF. The message even revealed the position of the enemy TF, which I had not detected before!

Sometime when I get attacked by enemy CBA, the position of the enemy CV-TF (the "source"-TF) is shown, again without any involvment of own search planes, subs etc.

Is this a bug or a feature ;-) ?

Thanks,

Oliver

TF detection

Post by mogami »

Hi, There are ways of explaining these but I don't claim they are what the designers had in mind only how I rationalize it for myself.
For enemy TF that launch strikes, you have the following ways to detect.
Radar picks up the strike and reverse course's it back to TF
Radio traffic from strike and TF reveals location
Your scout AC follow the strike path back and locate (often your strike will follow enemy strke home)

Allied
For enemy ops that get cancelled it is your coastwatchers (they all have spots they observe enemy bases from)
Or radio intercepts

For Japanese it would have to be intercepted radio traffic.

In bad weather TF's have to resort more to radio then in good weather where lights and flags can be used.

Spotting

Post by MarkS »

How is it that I know that a spotting aircraft saw me? Maybe he didn't see me; maybe I didn't see him etc. etc.

I should only know what I know, not what I think that I know that you know that I know you know, I think.

radio

Post by mogami »

Hi, You will likely see spotting AC before he sees you (radar)
You can tell he spotted something when he sends his report (you pick up radio transmission even though you may not be able to understand it you know where it is coming from)
Just because you know he made a report he might be reporting
"2BB when you are really 2CL)
Sometimes you will see the AC damaged by flak (got too close)
or damaged or shot down by CAP

There will be no message if no one makes contact.

It’s a matter of getting feedback from the game. Eventually, even with FoW, it becomes more important to know what’s happening in the game than to stick to 100% realism. I want to know things like that. I want to know when a ship hits a mine I laid last week. It’s FUN to hear those reports.

getting information is ok, but the detection of Taskforces because they canceled their airmission is not a good thing, radio detection wsa in the begining at this time, code breakers were active yes, but not a position detection by radio.

Radar is another question, most jap Taskforces were without radar in 42, but they spot the planes, at last they know when they are detected. Takes a lot of surprise out of the game.

intercepted radio

Post by mogami »

Hi, You don't have to be able to read the radio message a scout sends, When it transmitts you pick that up and can tell by how strong the signal is that someone (you know it's not you) nearby just transmitted. The TF's cancelling does not mean the increase in radio traffic is related to airmissions but they have to break silence because of weather just to manoveor (since flags and lights not working due to bad weather (fog, rain, heavy seas)
every single land hex on map is considered to be possible allied coastwatcher. So they could report Japanese air ops at bases
It is a stretch to explain how Japanese know about allies (give me time)(although bases like PM where both sides have forces in area Jap patrol/observation posts could explain. (Oz bases ok but Jap intell not really helped by this since it could be a fighter group training or supply/troop movement or any type of airop. If Japanese long range search flying they could simply be reporting area socked in.
