Grand strategy for Ottoman Empire in - The great war

Post by Grymme »

So

I am seeking some advice on grand strategy as ottoman empire in The Great War scenario.

I have read the excellent AAR on the subject.

As Ottoman Empire you have at least 2 fronts, probably 3 and possibly even 5. (Egypt, Romania, Greece, Crimea and Caucasus.

Is there a point in trying for Egypt, or should you go for Greece, Romania? Where to go and why? What to produce?

In my game i was lucky to totally destroy the Russian navy. Which basicly has made it possible to harass russian garrisons for a long time. Finally took Sevastopol in surprise assault. Problem is that that makes it 4 fronts for me. I am almost alone in Greece and also have Romania and Egypt to think about.

My thoughts are that easiest to capture are probably Romania followed by Sevastopol (if naval superiority). Romania is difficult to defend for Russia. Crimea also. Problem is that Ottoman Empire dont have resources or research to capture neither alone.

I have focused on producing Rifles, machineguns and early tanks. But is there something to be said for getting a third artillery unit? Could the ottomans afford it. What to do with the early tanks?

Sorry if i am rambling, but i am a little tired.

I guess it depends very much on your opponent. Had I not thrown away my navy, your move to sevastpol would have been much more expensive. So I guess you should look to capitalise on your oponents mistakes. Remember also, you say you have many fronts, but only two enemies.

Russia is fighting Austria and Germany as well. Where as the west has far too much on it's plate to attack from Egypt. I'd concentrate on the Balkans and Crimea if I were Turkey. But remember, your contribution to a Central Powers victory would be capturing Egypt.

The Great War is a two sided game so openning additional fronts (like Sevastopol) is not a bad idea since it is better to fight the battle on your opponent's territory than your own.  I think the only other advice I would give is to coordinate closely with Austria so you do not get in each other's way.

Delyn: yeah. Only 2 enemys, but since the west have production centers in Greece and Turkey that are pretty much independent the enemy really recievs reinforcements on atleast three fronts. It doesnt feel like i could ease the pressure in Egypt by attacking in Greece for example.

I agree that that navy battle was really lucky for me. I probably wouldnt even have tried the invasion if you would have a navy in the black sea.

Tweber: I respectfully have to disagree about the "taking the war to the enemys territory dogma here". Generally speaking taking the war to the enemy territory means closer supply lines and inner lines of communications for him. The exception is of course if you can damage the enemys production or capture a city. But that generally not the case in AT.

By the way. Noticed you made some Punic War scenario in Peoples Tactics. Any chance of you redoing them for AT?

I think it would be neat to do scenarios in other time periods.  The hardest thing about doing this is developing a unit set that you are comfortable with.  It would be fun to do down the road.  Unfortunately, I have more ideas than time to complete.  I would be happy to give you pointers if you were interested in trying this.

Yeah. I am the same, lots of ideas. Not enough time. More hoping to convince someone else to do it :)
