Finding a Happy Medium On A Limited Budget

Post by KG Erwin »

Yeah, it is possible. To cover my periods of interest, I have a collection that now extends from the ancients (Great Battles Series, all three volumes, bought 'em years ago) through the Wars in America (BOA2, just bought the d/l at $53), WWII (SPWAW -- a freebie, and my personal stamp is on part of it -- what else would one need? [:D]), and for the future, Galactic Civilizations.

That being said, my gaming budget for 2008 is fulfilled. One game a year is all I can allow myself.

Being *that* close to the poverty line ain't healthy - even as a cash-strapped kid I found the odd jobs which allowed me to buy more than one game a year. After all, if you can't afford the occasional $50 to spend on a hobby, you better pick another hobby.

Erwin, I don't recommed any Warhammer or BattleTech for you [:'(]
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Yeah Warhammer is like the yatch-club of gaming.

What I do is I sell my games on eBay to buy more games. It isn't so much about not having enough money, it is about getting the most bang for my buck. It is harder to do with Digital Download games, although it can be done.

That being said, even just collecting the coins left-over from daily life can, in about a year's time, equal about $200-300 (you would be surprised). My dad has a giant jar that he puts his coins into each day and at the end of the year (usually evey Christmas) I help him count it out. I typically get a nice cut that I use for gaming. We have done this as a father-son tradition, and even though I am all grown up, we still do it. So it has just as much pay-off in symbols and building memories as it does in money.

Yeah, I got such a jar, but the little rodents ( aka wife and kids) found a way through my hi-tech security system. ( gotta come up with a better hiding place)

I remember an aunt and uncle of mine put all their change in a jar at the end of each day. A year later they used the money to pay for their vacation.

But to be limited to a $50 per year game allowance? I don't think I could handle that. I like new releases too much.

I'm lucky if I can limit myself to one game a month!

Me and KG have had our differences but chastising the guy for having “budget “ priorities is pretty pathetic

So let me get this straight Sarge,

You call two guys pathetic for commenting on another poster's budget piorities.

Then you comment upon Joram's budget for games by implying that he lives in his parents basement.

That makes tons of sense and is totally not ironic and hypocritic. [8|]

I took a saturday only job at Target and make an extra $50 a week so I can buy what I want for me if I want a game and the family gets my weekly job money. Now the sad thing is I can't find a thing to spend it on I really want. Anyone ever get gaming burn out? I've been this way for months now and just can't even get into the games I already have.

LOL, get a life Sarge, just am lucky to make more than I can use.  So I spend some of my excess on my car, my family, and games.  And I work very hard for what I earn.

So your telling me your good with telling someone to start saving your pennies or find a new hobby as appropriate in your world , but laughing at the guy bragging how many games he can afford is ironic and hypocritic ?

Why am I not surprised .

It's pointing out the obvious. If you can only afford $50/year to spend on your main hobby you're living on the poverty line and missing out on all the good stuff that gets released anyway so rethinking your priorities and hobbies is probably a good idea.

Joram wasn't laughing at anyone, he just said he can afford a game a month. No need to bash him as a "basement dweller" in his mother's house. That is a stupid and overused stereotype anyway.

Saving pennies was my idea, and a good one. Eventually quarters, dimes, and nickles add up to $50. Then you have a game.

This thread has gone way off the right track, although, the OP is one of those OPs that is bound to raise up controversy. Money, sex, politics, and religion. All bad forum topics.

Over here in this part of Europe we still have "rubbish" coins of 1,2 and 5 Eurocent which just add weight to your pockets without amounting to anything so I've come to throw them in a jar as well. Every couple of months I exchange its contents for a fiver so in the course of a year it might well add up to a game.

Sarge, you have completely misinterpreted what everyone is saying.  I was simply saying I don't have the willpower that KG Erwin has until you made that crack about the basement which was completely uncalled for.  Why don't you do everyone a favor and just end it.  My apologies to Erwin for contributing to this going way off topic.

Hah! If he was any kind of a real man, he'd have his woman carrying the umbrella for him, too. That's what my wife does...[:D]

Of course, this being an all-ages, family-oriented site, I won't tell you where she would put that umbrella if she happened to read this post...[X(]
