My Fleet...

Post by Ike99 »

This is my current set of Japanese ships I´m using. All capital ships have the rising sun flag with BB´s and CV´s with additional signals flags on them.

Transports and other minor ships carry the national flag. I will upload this set somewhere for anyone who wants them to download and use them. Also is the identical set with the see through back ground for combat animations.

I´ll post the link to download here later but this is a preview of what they look like...

I´m doing the Allied side now with US, Australia, etc flags on respective ships. Post that link later too.

Can someone tell me when the USA ships began using the camouflage markings?

Just a guess on my part, but when the paint order was delivered?  [;)]

Right.

Well i´m thinking at game start they certainly didn´t but by mid to late 43´ probably yes, at least some.

I´m going to go with the markings unless I hear something contrary. Looks better anyways.

I know there are some similar pictures of the ships for Operation torch having them in late 42, but most at that time had a more solid bottom with simulated wave action coloration above that as an ASW camo to give the impression of higher than actual speeds. Before that US usually went with a solid pain scheme. The one you are showing was getting popular in mid-43 onwards I think. I know for sure it was what the US "old" BB's were getting after they came out of reconstructions from that point on. I think this one was more of an Anit-sub paint scheme. Very late war the US seemed to go back to a more solid, anti-air preference.

hope that helps

If that´s right they were definately in process of adding the markings to their ships by game start.

I did some looking and feel comfortable using the markings on many of the US ships from a historic accuracy standpoint.

I will add splash marks to the transports as well. It seems clear they were adding the wartime paint to the ships very shortly after war start. Anything to make a submarine captain judge wrong and make his torpedo miss...

I have finished the Allied Flags ships and have sent to Rogue. He should have it up for download soon.

99.9% of the hardwork, the actual ship art comes from various other people, Fremen, Tom Label, etc, and various other ship artist and their work I could find.

So others did all the heavy lifting.

I felt the picture looks more complete though with the respective flags on the ship art so if you are like me you´ll like them...

If it's any help the 1/700th scale kit I built of the Hornet recently shows it with the splash camaflouge and it comes with a complement of B-25s to depict it at the time of the Tokyo raid, so the kit at least implies that the camaflouge paint was in use at that time.

This is the artwork on the box cover:

Hello,

I have come into this rather late. Missed the subscription email & have not visted forums lately. Apologies. Interesting info. below.

Per Osprey Publishing ( US Navy Aircraft Carriers 1922-45 & 1942-45 ):-

A handbook on Ship Camouflage was first issued in Sept. 1937. The last handbook issued was June 1942. Several "measures" ( camouflage types ) were used at various points of the war. The Carriers had approx. 15 "measures" in total, with different ships having various mixes at various stages of the war!
Measure 11 was used 9/41 to 6/42 by Lexington, Saratoga & Enterprise.
Measure 12 was used 9/41 to late 42 / early 43 by all prewar carriers except Saratoga & Enterprise, also used by the Essex & Independence classes. Ranger, Wasp and Hornet used a modified measure 12.
Measure 21 was used 6/42 to end of the war by Saratoga & Enterprise,
and also by the Essex & Independence classes.
Measure 22 was seldom used by Carriers , but was the most commonly used measure by the US Navy as a whole.
The above is just a snapshot. Colours below.

11= Whole ship is Sea Blue.
12= Sea Blue waterline to hanger deck. Ocean Grey on all other vertical services. Haze Grey on Masts.
Modified 12= Sea Blue in a pattern that varied from ship to ship.
21=All vertical services Navy Blue.
22= Navy Blue lower portion of hull ( waterline to hanger deck on carriers ), upper portions Haze Grey.

The patterns you have attached here appear to be a Modified 12.
Unsure what your finished ones are though! Generally the Red paint was below the waterline and often ( but not always ) had a black line between it and the camouflage. Any red above the waterline appears to be rust in the Osprey colour plates.

I sent the Allied file to him. I will send him a PM. Perhaps the e mail ended up in his SPAM folder.
