Post by Belisarius »

Think we're missing half of the Russian report here, but I'm moving on:

Seems like me and Goblin got ourselves two different breeds of Feldgrau;
His infantry are light on the toes and avoids mines, but doesn't care to tell the motorized fellows behind them.

MY infantry puts their fingers in their ears, closes their eyes and vigourusly starts stomping in front of them. They discover minefields everywhere! 3 more this turn to a total loss of 5 men. Lost my first vehicle as well, an 8-rad ran into one and was torn apart.

We are getting ever closer to the hospital area, and contact with the enemy is made. One lucky 45mm ATG creamed one of Gob's StuGs, but Kampfgruppe Belisarius let them taste everything from rifle bullets to 15cm shells! Amazingly, some crew members survived! Well, a threat it is no more.

More enemies sighted at the suburbs west of Train Station One. There, we have commenced the attack on the city proper.

Surrender, red scum, and we will spare your lives and your housings! Fight on, and all will be turned to dust!

After a careful marshalling of forces, the order to advance is given! The attack has begun in earnest! Anxious AFV commanders surge forward, down 'safe corridors' through the mines, and a half dozen are turned to showers of metal and mud as the 'safe corridors', checked by the infantry, are mined everywhere!

The attack presses on, with heavy fighting in the northern Workers Housing, and at the Hospital area. A fortified building kills a SP gun at the hospital. The SP was trying to shoot an infantry unit that is miraculously invisible unless you are right next to it! There is NO line of site to it, unless you move next to it. I don't see why? It cost me two vehicles...

Soviet Engineers put up a fierce struggle in the Worker's Housing fight! So do Soviet AT platoons, as my recon vehicles are finding out.

I am no longer going to check for mines, as it is a waste of my time, and delaying units that need to be at the fighting.

Soviet Infantry are dieing! A pair of Hs 129B-2/R1's strafe Soviet armored columns waiting at the ferries, and kill a T34! It is going to be a dark day for many a Russian family! We only beg for peace, and you may have it by saying two words... They rhyme with Guy Durrender!;)

Order nr. 4 to the Forces of the Stalingrad and South-west Fronts

1 September 1942
The Army in the Field

Comrade fighters, commanders and political workers, heroic defenders of Stalingrad!

The bitter fighting for the city of Stalingrad has been raging for months. The Germans have lost hundreds of tanks and planes. Hitler's brutalised hordes are advancing towards Stalingrad and the Volga over mountains of dead bodies of their own men and officers.

Our Bolshevik Party, our nation, our great country, have given us the task not to let the
enemy reach the Volga, to defend the city of Stalingrad. The defence of Stalingrad is of
decisive importance for the whole Soviet front.

Without sparing our strength and with scorn for death, we shall defy the Germans the way
to the Volga and not give up Stalingrad. Each one of us must bear in mind that the capture
of Stalingrad by the Germans and their advance to the Volga will give our enemies new strength and weaken our own forces.

Not one step back!

The War Council expects unlimited courage, tenacity and heroism in the fight with the
onrushing enemy from all the fighters, commanders and political workers, from all the defenders of Stalingrad. The enemy must and will be smashed on the approaches to Stalingrad. Forward against the enemy! Up into the unremitting battle, comrades,
for Stalingrad, for our great country !

Death to the German invader!

Commander-in-Chief of
Stalingrad and South-west Front
Signed :
Colonel General A. Yeremenko

Member of the War Council of
Stalingrad- and South-west Front
Signed :
Lieutenant General N. Khrushchev

The enemy has reached the outskirts of Stalingrad. The real fight has just begun.

Numerous enemy vehicles burn in the minefields before the city. Even their fleeing crews are not safe from the everpresent threat.:D

Tatsinskaya airfield is under heavy attack. Enemy infantry and tanks are closing in, while a lone Stuka struck at a fortified building guarding the northern perimeter. Its 250kg bomb collapsed the walls, but the reinforced interior has held and will continue to defy german attacks. Sporadic mortar and artillery fire falls on the first line of defense. In the southern sector, the enemy has yet to attempt a serious breakthrough. A little rocket barrage from our comrades of the Katyusha artillery yields disappointing results. Hope we scared them enough to go find themselves a minefield;)

The advance continues undaunted by the sudden mine explosions. The city will be taken! Our scouts spot a fortified bunker at the city edge close to the Lenin and Red square. It covers our main road into town, so it needs to be dealt with immediately. In the same area, we lose a SdKfz250 to an unseen 45mm ATG.

Otherwise, very little is seen of the Ivan. Which is strange, we know they're as numerous as the grains in the fields of Ukraine.

More mines! First loss of a "major" AFV, a StuG ran into one driving OUT of a hex. *kboom* Our heavy-footed infantry discovered some, too. :p

btw: I'll be out for the rest of the week. It's midsummer's eve tomorrow, so we have some traditional Swedish pagan rites to tend to. :D (read: eat weird food, get drunk) Hey, we even get the day off! I'm outta here!

More Communist infantry die to the combined arms assault of our crack units! The hospital is just about ours, and we are fighting our way into the workers housing areas too. A couple more of our machines perish to mines, but we have an unexpected event happen!

A non-vehicle unit found a mine! An MG34 crew was jogging towards the fight when half of them were turned to bloody bits of shrapnel by the device. Our other infantry units can't figure it out... their anti-grav boots must have failed.;)

Surrender Commies! Our wrath grows, and is soon to be unleashed!

Challenge - Good link! :)

Stepped on one of our mines near Red Square. There are just soooo many of them. ;)

Trust me, friends invaders, we have mines everywhere. No step is safe. You´d better go home now while you still have your feet attached!:D

Air strikes are increasing. I counted at least half a dozen sorties, and one of them came very close to sinking a river barge!!! (Repeated cannon/MG Top hits, but it still is floating).

The streetfights are already starting in the northern sector, and it is only a matter of time before Belisarius tries to take the first few houses. Tatsinskaya airbase is under heavy attack by SP guns and infantry. The enemy has breached the western perimeter and is heading towards the hospital. Soon we might lose sight of the three StuG´s burning north of the base, shot up earlier by a (now silenced)45mm ATG or destroyed by mines...:p

We are getting ever closer to the banks of the Volga. Through the smoke we can sometimes even see the glittering water! A beautiful sight indeed!

The motorized troops have picked up advice from the infantry nearby, and are now able to find mines all by themselves! West of the hospital, a tracked gun is burned to a crisp when the mine triggers a chain exposion in the ammo storage bins. South of the airfield, the Krukoy Gully his heavily mined and a PzIV is torn apart at the bottom of it. Argh.

Our friends in the russian army have also volounteered to find mines for us! :D At least three minefields are discovered by Soviet troops retreating.. heh heh heh. Death forwards and death backwards. Surrender and you will have food, wine and beautiful ladies instead!

Units of Kamfgruppe Belisarius has taken the first houses in the area west of Train Station One / Univermag. We have killed off some of the crew manning the 45mm that claimed a 250 a short while ago. Spec Ops forces chase away dug in Soviets at the city edge.

Soon....

Kamfgruppe Goblin is swarming over the workers housing area, and there are not going to be Russian survivors.

There is fighting outside the park now, with small arms fire flying back and forth.

The Hospital area is ours, and we are fighting our way across the Airfield, engaging a 76.2mm AA gun, and a 45mm ATG. The fortified building has been incinerated by a Flammpanzer.

Our arty is extremely sporadic, and in areas where we desperately need it, we must do without.

The Luftwaffe is NOT sporadic! More Soviet tanks have died at the ferries, and a barge was strafed also. A Dock, packed with infantry was destroyed in a shower of wood and men by the bombs of a Stuka. Just as important, the pilots are reporting what they see....

More casualties to mines, both tracks and foots.

The comrades of the AAA have gotten another Stuka and sent it tumbling into the Volga. The pilot might consider himself lucky, I can´t guarantee fair treatment should have parachuted onto the eastern bank where our infantry is waiting for the ferries under constant bombardment. The dock collapsed by a Stuka 250kg bomb took at least 50 men and Gaz SPAA with it. Ouch!

The enemy has reached the northern end of the Tatsinskaya runway. The Flammpanzer which had torched the reinforced building hit a mine while driving off, and has become a flametank indeed. :D

Streetfighting has erupted in my southern sector. German troops are headed along the main road north of the Univermag towards the city centre, and have already tasted the sting of our Maxim HMG´s and PTRD AT rifles. More and more Katyusha rockets are smashing into the enemies advancing ranks, I even heard the "Klonk" of an AFV being hit.

Most encouraging are the numerous mine detonations. Should the germans continue to lose tanks at this rate, victory will be ours.:)

On the other hand, this might indicate that the attacker has huge amounts of tanks, SP guns, armored cars and halftracks.:(

Hmm...did Orzel playtest this one? The number of mines are sickening! :p You may think we've ranted enough about these things, but ohhh no! SEVEN more fields this turn! And one of my dear StuGs fell victim to one!

I'll leave the Luftwaffe report to Goblin, he sees more than I do. (I'm more interested in what's dug in the ground  )

Advance is slowed to a crawl. I have sent an MC courier back to the artillery batteries to personally slap them around for me. No smoke curtains! I've been waiting two turns for those by now! Meanwhile I'm being shot up Russians! OK, maybe not shot up, but eventually some stray bullets goes our way... you get the picture. Even the conscripts got rifles this time around. :(

Wow. We have fought our way through the Workers Housing area to the main N/S road, near the N/S railroad tracks. The house to house is VISCIOUS!! The communists are better armed for it with those lethal SMG's.

The hospital is ours. The airfield might as well be, both ATG's that fired (they may have been AA) have been blasted numerous times.

More casualties to mines. Minor news item now.

The Luftwaffe is killing Russians like they might stop making Russians next week and they want to get it all in!

Reinforcements!!!!!! Die you commie bastards! :D

The "blasted" AA guns hit your sIG´s quite nicely. Boom! There goes one! Bang! There goes another! We hold the runway and kick a$$!:p

More firefighting in the main street towards Red Square. The German advance has stalled.

Total terror amongs the attackers of the Mamayev Kurgan: Katyusha rockets strike amongst the massed infantry!

The german attack plan is beginning to unveil itself. My thoughts are still classified at the moment:D
