In 1969 I was eleven when my dad and I discovered AH games, purchasing Afrika Korps. I don't have all the games I ever purchased, and haven't played a board wargame in ages. The joy of playing it on the computer is that setup and takedown is so easy...

That was also my first (I started playing in 1971 at the age of 15). During my first marriage, the "extra bedroom" eventually was transformed into a bed-less war room with some massive Pacific War map on the floor and what seemed to be 1000's of counters. Loved the hell out of it, but the wife was not so thrilled. Oddly enough her cats kept gaining access to the closed room, which tended to shorten the campaigns (to say nothing of the marriage!) But yes, computer screens are soooo much simpler!

I don't post here much (but I love WiTP), I started playing in the mid '80s with Third Reich, Squad Leader, and later ASL. My brother and I had enormous fun playing Gary Grigsby's North Atlantic 1986 head to head on an Apple II clone ...

33 here, been playing computer wargames since mid 80s on my C-64. First wargame was SSI's Rebel Charge at Chickamauga.

My son (10 yrs)can appreciate WITP - he realizes how rare and special surface combat is - he always wants me to call him so he can watch if one pops up on the screen.

He plays Axis and Allies with me, but he likes to play Battleground Europe (WWIIOL) more so. So I jump on and tail gun with him sometimes on that game.

I bought my first wargames when I was like 10-12 yo. War in the west for C64 tape was my favorite. The pacific war I bought as soon as I read the review back in 1992(?). I was like 14yo back then. It was one of the most amazing games I had ever seen and it fitted into a single disk - I still own it.

I'll bet you lied. Either you are not a woman or you are not 53. Would find it hard to believe that both are true...

On another board on of the oldest players is a woman of 60-70 age. Her favs include rpgs and games like diablo. And she has played strategy games too and says this about them:
Some people take anti-depressants or rely on their faith to overcome anxiety. For me, nothing works as well as a procedural, non-emotionally involving type of game. In fact for years strategy gaming helped keep me from dwelling on and over-reacting to some difficult personal situations by totally immersing me in a brain activity I rarely use--non-emotional,non-hormonal and neutral thought. I don't know if this is a gender thing or not.

My wife thinks I am 5, but almost 8 times that... I think I was one of the best overseas customers of a certain CT based mail-order company in the 80's. Spent 80 bucks (plus all fees) to get War In Russia for Apple II. Ah the tricks ctrl-c did in the game :)

She still has issues with my gaming, but has given up nagging, I reckon.

Yeah, but you would no longer be a college student!!! [:D] This game can eat up all your free time, and some that isn't. Anybody else multitask while on conference calls at work???

My first wargame was also Tactics II, in 1963. Also around that time I had Risk and Diplomacy. We played Diplomacy and Risk the most though. My first computer war game was the Ancient Art of War (and the follow on, War at Sea)then Kampfgruppe, followed by Mech Brigade.
