Ace in a day

Post by n01487477 »

A pilot shooting down more than 5 planes in a day ...

Has anyone seen this happen in WITP ? As a Japanese player I've never seen this, but been close, maybe you Allied players might have ...

Taken from wikipedia ...
The term "ace in a day" is used to designate a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more airplanes in a single day. The most notable is Hans-Joachim Marseille of Germany, who was credited with downing 17 Allied fighters in just three sorties over North Africa on September 1, 1942, during World War II. The highest number aerial victories for a single day was claimed by Emil Lang, who claimed 18 Soviet fighters on November 3, 1943. Erich Rudorffer is credited with the destruction of 13 aircraft in a single mission on October 11, 1943. Numerous other Luftwaffe pilots also claimed the title during World War II.

On December 5, 1941, the leading Australian ace of World War II, Clive Caldwell, destroyed five German aircraft in the space of a few minutes, also in North Africa. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross for the feat.

During World War II, 68 U.S. pilots—43 Army Air Forces, 18 Navy, and seven Marine Corps—were credited the feat, including David McCampbell, who claimed seven Japanese planes shot down on June 19, 1944 (during the "Marianas Turkey Shoot"), and nine in a single mission on October 24, 1944. Others included Joe Foss, Chuck Yeager and Oscar Francis Perdomo, the last US "ace in a day"[10].

Other pilots to have claimed "ace in a day" status during World War II include Antoni Głowacki of Poland, during the Battle of Britain, and Jorma Sarvanto of Finland, during the Winter War. Captain Hans Wind of HLeLv 24, Finnish Air Force, scored five kills in a day a remarkable five times during the Soviet Summer Offensive 1944, a total of 30 kills in 12 days, of his final tally of 75.

Many, many times in stock, BigB and CHS.

Here is the latest example from my BigB 1.2 game:

2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 19
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 20
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 21
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 22
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 23
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 24
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 25
2LT McGarry, W.D. of AVG/C is credited with kill number 26

And to prove it was no fluke, this was from the very next turn:

FO Thanos I. of 51st FG/B is credited with kill number 8
FO Thanos I. of 51st FG/B is credited with kill number 9
FO Thanos I. of 51st FG/B is credited with kill number 10
FO Thanos I. of 51st FG/B is credited with kill number 11
FO Thanos I. of 51st FG/B is credited with kill number 12

To put these in context, both units fly the P-38; it's mid 1943 and the Jap pilot pool is not what it was...

In my PBEM game as allies, (Stock scen 15), 1LT R. Young of 24th FG earned five kills on his first mission.  The stats showed one mission and five kills until about 2 Jan 1942 when he finally flew another mission.  No more kills so far.

I had a guy in an old AAR who had kills with no missions. Someone explained that CAP did not always count towards the mission total.

He was flying CAP as this doesn't count towards missions flown.

Mistmatz - Thanks for the info about CAP and mission count.  It's one more part of the game that I hadn't known.

I am attacking everywhere as I move my hands to the Japanese throat for the final squeezes, so am finding plenty of trade. Jap newbie pilots are buy one get one free!

ps - and Mistmatz can't tell me off for this guy - he definitely was not an Ace already...

It still shows on the ops report, but does not show up on the combat replay. How goes it, HS? [&o]
