Birth of America 2: Wars in America is the much expanded reprise of veteran developer AGEOD’s acclaimed first release, which allows players to command either side of the conflicts before, during and after the American War for Independence between 1636 and 1815. Apart from the engaging turn-based strategy play that has been expanded and vastly improved over the original, Birth of America 2: Wars in America includes major new features like an improved and expanded map including the Mississippi River, new European off-map boxes (France, Great Britain, Spain, Holland) and more.

Any suggestions for the best scenario (other than "tutorial") to start out with in order to learn the game?

Hi
After playing the one GShock recommends and some other short duration scenarios and once you have the basics of the interface and game mechanics, i would recommend the Montacalm Scenario (Master of Carillon is the title i think).
It's a condensed version of the most interesting part of the Franco indian wars. Its medium sized in both lenght and unit count and is very interesting but not overwhelming for a new players.
The BoA version of this scenario is what made me discover how great the AGEOD game engine was a couple of years ago.
Since then i have never stoped playing these games.[;)]

Regards!
