I'm on the cusp of buying this game again (thank God for b-day cash) and am wondering about the effect that planes have on the game. Are they used just for recon, or can they have an effect on combat as well?

And would it take too much time to really develop them in a game for them to be effective at all?

They do recon as in telling you the strength of the units you face. They also affect combat by making artillery fire more effective but they do not bomb or strafe or anything like that.

BTW, definitely buy the game.
