Vista Ultimate 64 bit: solution

Post by el cid again »

I am having no issues re Vista 32 bit versions - all of them.

But I am unable to load WITP from CD on Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Is this a known issue?

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit and had no problems. The first install didn't work so I re-installed to the WITP default directory and the game loaded with no problems.

OK - I got the CD to load properly - it seems this combination of operating system and computer require you wait quite a while but it actually does work. Further - the basic WITP program off the CD works properly.

However - installing the 1.804 patch causes "Fatal Error 999" when you try to load the program. Any clue what that means?

I believe you get code 999 when witprec.exe is missing.  Some virus checkers have been known to delete it thinking it's a virus.

It is certainly missing - so this may be the issue.

I reinstalled again from CD

doing so directly failed

but doing so after removing the install worked

so 1.0 works fine.

BUT I do not find any witprec.exe file in the working installation - and searching does not reveal it anywhere on the drive.
Also - I should see even hidden files with my settings.

Any ideas?

OK - this is interesting:

I saved the main WITP exe file - and copied it into the working 1.0 folder - and get the 999 error.

I copied the main WITP exe file back - and it works fine.

The issue appears to be in the 1.804 file - or something it calls - but the original 1.0 version works without that problem.

OK -

This issue does not exist - it is entirely my fault - or at least 99 per cent.

The report above is correct - but witprec.exe is not part of the original package - it is part of 1.8xx updates only.

My problem was that I was installig 1.806 patch - a partial - which does NOT have the witprec.exe file in it. This update works ONLY IF you have installed 1.804 comprehensive before you attempt it.

The reason I did this wrong is I downloaded the wrong patch for a new machine (the old one being sent away for work by the manufacturer).
I hit the download button above instead of below the 1.804 patch - and got 1.806 without realizing it.

1.804 works properly (although it would erase any art, save games, or pwhex in an existing install).

The most important step installing WITP and all of the mods (CHS etc) is the one you miss or skip. I only get the install to work if I take my time and follow directions explicitly-which is not in my nature to do.
