I often get a "failed to open connection to player java.net NoRouteToHostException operation timed out" error message. Don't remember whether it is as attacker or defender or both.

Either you or your opponent has not configured their system to play on the internet correctly

You must make sure your Firewall(s) is allowing CoI to access the internet
and you must have these ports forwarded (opened)
CoI Ports
2300 to 2400 udp/TCP
6073 TCP
47624 TCP

A lot of routers , including D-Link, are easy set up as you just have to choose directctX 7/8 games from it's virtual server page and forward them to your PC.

For MMCCIII

Ports 1939 to 1945 and 2108 to 2110 must be open/forwarded in your router/modem for this app. to function correctly.

I met one opponent (DeathDealr) who said he was able only to defend. When he tried attacking I was unable to connect to him, but had no problem connecting when he was the defender. He did admit to having a router. I have no router.

DeathDealer needs to set up port forwarding and check his firewall(s)
