anyone at matrix still have up to date code?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Alby,

It's not just sp mortars that can fire unlimited smoke.  Any unit can do it.  And any artillery can do it even after moving and even after unloading.  The reason is because the game code does not count smoke as ammo.  So, when I play I set a restriction on myself that I can only fire smoke if the firing unit has shots left (with one exception:  I allow an infantry unit that has just been suppressed by enemy fire to deploy smoke even if it has had all its shots taken away by the enemy supressing fire).

Would anyone care to remind me, what prevents SPWAW source code to be made open source? There are great deal of commercial games, whose sources have been made available for public: Doom, Jagged Alliance 2, Freespace 2...

IIRC the story goes something like this:
MG receives the game code from SSI for the SP3 game. MG is allowed to use this code to make a game but with the understanding that they (MG) could not charge for the game itself...only for the mega-campaigns that would be offered as add-ons.

Since then SSI has been bought out and shuttered down by Ubisoft so I imagine that they now own the rights to the code...and as such they would have to agree to making the code an open source code.

So even though MG has decided to move on from their version they probably can not legally release the code regardless.

At least that's the way I remember reading it from a previous post or two a couple years back. [;)]

Orzel is correct. The legal gobbledygook involved prevents Matrix from releasing the code.

Honestly, the only people who care are those of us who still play it. The "powers that be" left it to languish, for reasons we can only guess at. I've learned to accept SPWaW as a "legacy" game (i.e., no further development envisioned) and leave it at that.

The only hope I can see is if Mike Wood can be convinced to make a few more tweaks to that ancient code. He DID do so in recent years, and left it up to others to fiddle with it. In my view, the community's results were mostly successful, but some other by-popularity-vote changes put paid to any further involvement by Mr. Wood. You players can draw your own conclusions.

Hmmm...something happen during my 2 year absence from the forums that I missed?

Last I can recall was Mike was tweaking the code of his own accord and even took in some community feedback before having to re-direct his time and efforts on other more pressing (planned money-making) ventures for MG.

I wasn't even aware that other "outside forces" were the true cause of his SPWAW mech work-stoppage. Wow, learn something new everyday I guess.

Maybe MG could call Ubisoft, and ask for public release of the code? If we ask MG nicely enough to make the call... [;)]

Why not ask[&o] MATRIX GAMES if you can change the existing code, subject to their approval, prior to release as a mod/change/whatever ????[&:] Hey What ?

You are correct, Ken. IIRC, Mike also had some trouble with data files during a move or computer error or somesuch. I remember talking to him about it at Origins, but forget the exact situation. He was doing all of the recent changes on his own time, due to issues that were bugging him. He did plan on doing more of the requested changes, but then the above incidences occured. [:(]

From my conversations with Mike, this is patently incorrect, and basically rumor-mongering. One assumes you refer to ENH or the OOB project at the Depot, which led into ENH. Mike was extremely impressed with ENH ("some of the cleanest, best OOB work he has seen"), and wanted to make it the official OOB set for the game. Reverse compatibility prevented this. Matrix even allowed some code changes via TDR Hack for some of the game data.

Goblin small point:
Matrix used TDR Hack for some OOB edit exercise as it was the only OOB editor that provided correct access to all OOB data.
They approved the use of and formally endorsed MechEdit as a third party code editor that changed specific code within the Mech.exe engine.
MechEdit is the reason that the current Enhanced Mech.Exe has its current national properties/characteristics.
Some will also remember the stink MechEdit initially caused till Matrix officially approved its use.

There was also a program to change entries in the unit icon table within Mech.exe. Also there were a couple of programs for winSPWW2 ands winSPMBT to do with OOB editing and icon tables.

All programs were produced by the same person.

And no I don’t know where the code is anymore.

IIRC (again) I believe at one point Ubisoft may have been approached by a group of community members a good while back about the code...but never heard back from the company. Don't quote me on that one though.[;)] I'm sure it probably would take something along the lines of MG having to inquire to get some sort of reply out of the folks at Ubisoft.

However, chances are by now that the code has been misplaced or even lost since Ubisoft killed the SSI brand line not long after buying them out. With the advance of game programing and computer capabilities I wouldn't be surprised at all if they willingly purged a lot of older game codes figuring there would be no need for the likes of them anymore.

But then again...that's just this guys opinion. [:)]

So, do I take this to mean that Mike IS interested in making further code tweaks? OR, he is OK with the current changes? I've gotten comfortable with it, and will continue to play the game with the incorporated ENH version.

For my purposes, the ENH version has replaced the 8.403 version. THESE are the OOBs I use as the baseline for personal customization.

Godfrey Daniel! I stick my nose back in to see what's happening and it's like I never left! I think it's the same topic, too! [:D] Very good to see so many familiar names still kicking things around. I'm not gaming any more at all, but after nearly two years away was hit by an impulse to scan the Forum. Perhaps my subconscious is telling me something.
Retreat is NOT an option.
