WitP in Windows mode

I'm pretty computer illiterate, so I don't know if the subject title was the right terminology, but I hear about people running the game as a window, where they can access other programs while the game is running. How does one do this, and is it safe to run the game this way and not screw up my computer or my PBEM game? It would be nice to have access to and type some notes while I am working the game. Please use the most basic of steps for my computer challenged brain. Thanks.
