A rare engagement

Post by Kingfisher »

Day Time Surface Combat at 27,30

Japanese Ships
BB Yamato
BB Musashi
DD Wakazuki, on fire
DD Makinami
DD Kagero, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hamakaze
DD Asagumo, on fire, heavy damage
DD Akatsuki, on fire
DD Shikinami, on fire, heavy damage
DD Amagiri
DD Asakaze, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
BB Maryland, Shell hits 3, on fire
BB South Dakota, Shell hits 1
CA Pensacola
CA New Orleans
CA Astoria
CL Leander
DD Strong
DD Taylor
DD Bache
DD Hutchins
DD Lardner
DD Barton
DD Blue
DD Drayton

What makes this so unique, at least for me, is that the two sides met in mid-ocean (Hex 27,30 is NE of Bonis) in daylight. A lot of shells hurled back and forth but few hits. The Japanese DDs listed as burning were the result of a previous airstrike.

What was the range that the engagement was fought at? What were the speeds of the slowest ships in each TF? I think it must've been at fairly long range as no fish were mentioned and the damaged IJN DDs or BB Maryland were slow enough to prevent the commitment to a pitched battle rather than a skirmish.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Don't remember the range. I think the main reason the two sides didn't lock up is because they were on bombardment missions - my allied ships inbound for Rabaul while the Japanese heading towards Buin. It was just pure chance that they chose the same hex at the same time.

The ratings of the Task force commanders comes to thought.

The allied commander is M. Tisdale. The TF screen says he has a leadership rating of 63 and an inspiration rating of 84. The latter rating is by far the best out of the available commanders, even surpassing Spruance and Mitcher.

I have no idea who the Japanese commander was, but given he commanded both Yamato and Musashi, and allowed an allied BB TF to escape destruction and subsequently bombard the Japanese HQ for the entire SE Pac, I would think it safe to assume he has been reassigned to man a foxhole on the next beach destined for invasion.

Agressiveness?

Yes, the leaders have an Agressiveness rating. It isn´t listed in the game but if you open the editor you´ll see this rating with the leaders.

Or Kingfisher you can go to Spookys site and download the OOB for Japan and the Allies. It has a section with the leaders that list all their aggresiveness ratings.
