Hurricane Ike

Post by KG Erwin »

This one looks like it could cause much property damage along the Texas coast. Thankfully the evacuation orders were timely given. My in-laws live east of Dallas, so they will bear the outward wind/rain as the storm dissipates. My thoughts go to the folks who reside close to the coast, and I hope you DON'T try to weather it out. Ike is likely to spawn a killer wave, so play it safe and get the hell out of threatened areas.

Hi KG,

I live about 30 miles north of Houston and thankfully on the fringe of the 100mph wind predictions. We've boarded up all the windows, 'cept the one to the backyard, that one goes last. We have batteries, ham radios (4 of us are amateur radio operators) a hand crank radio, candles, food for three days and a generator with enough gas for a day's worth of running.
Oh, and we have alcohol for consumption and medicinal purposes... <grin>

I think we're good as long as we don't get a stray tornado as we will be on the 'dirty' or 'wet' side of the storm.

If house power continues, I'll keep you all posted.

Regards,

Rob

I have a vague plan to build a monolithic dome home. One of the reasons is their resistance to natural disasters. This dome replaced a house destroyed by a hurricane and is designed to resist them. It's fitted with storm shutters that also enhance its security and the raised structure allows the storm surge to pass underneath. I believe they have ridden out one that caused them no damage, unlike their neighbours.

These monolithic domes can withstand most other natural disasters like fires, earthquakes and tornadoes too. People who live in them say that they provide a calming feeling of security and strength. The interior photos are from a dome built in 1982.

Cheers, Neilster

Practically every private home built in Germany since WW2 has had rolling shutters as a standard feature and many older homes have had them retrofitted.

Note that these shutters don't have the ugly boxes on top, like the few American houses do that have shutters. Instead, they roll up into a space in the wall above the window. They provide privacy, shade from the sun and security. And probably save on heating bills in the winter.
Gee, pure genius, eh?
This simple addition to a home could save people in hurricane-prone areas in the southern US a good deal of work and fuss every year, as well as probably money in the long run.

Speaking of geniuses, here's the typical American way of securing windows against hurricane winds, which we see them do every year:

Yeah, we all have those kind of vague dreams, don't we? If security against inclement weather is what you're after, you might consider something from here. Nothing can touch you, except perhaps a direct hit from a nuke, literally.
While we're on the subject of beautiful houses, I always liked this one:

I like those shutters. One draw back to them is insects can enter into the hallowed out space where the shutter, when rolled up goes into.
A building where I was living in Castalgandolfo, Italy. Had these shutters. Bees entered into the space above the shutters. Built honeycombs so large the shutters could not be used. We smoked the bees out had to open up the wall to remove a massive sized honeycomb.[;)]

Shit happens. You can clean out a honeycomb maybe once a lifetime, if ever, or you can nail 8x4 sheets of plywood around your house every friggin year.
I know what I would prefer. [;)]

I can't believe they don't have shutters, I never really noticed it actually, so normal are shutters here [;)]

Oh and then we also built our homes from bricks and stone, not cardboard and wood, LOL

I like this dome thing, looks great.

Read the post mate. I didn't say the interiors were from the house in the first picture.

BTW, folks, you'd better fill up your gas tanks now. The convenience store I frequent sold 12,000 gallons on Friday the 12th, when 87 octane was $3.85. They actually ran out of gas, and today, after replenishment, it's $4.05.

I don't see it [8|]
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Have you heard of putting new appliances in an older building man? It's a common trick. Devilish cunning I know...[;)]

Apparently the thread hijacking by some of you was successful. What better way to say, "we don't give a d*mn about America's problems". Remember, what goes around comes around. See ya later.
