Captain Schmidt was tired of war. Three long years of campaigning had taken their toll. It seemed so long ago that he and his friends had earned their wings, and now all but him, gone.

He circled above the advancing Panzer columns, with his three young. green pilots, when they recieved word that the Amerikaners had been sighted moving inland from the beachhead at Salerno. He followed his young charges, diving through the clouds, the morning sun at his back.

He amied his Ju87 Stuka at the earth and caught his breath as he broke through the clouds .

"Gott in Himmell!", he thought to himself as he saw the burning Panzers behind line after line of advancing Yankee infantry and vehicles.

He called for Col. Vebber on the radio. "This is Maj. Stoltz, Col. Vebber's command was overrun." came the reply.

"There is at least a regiment defending the ridgeline just ahead of you!", the Capt barked.

50 cal tracers arced through the air. Captain Schmidt stared in horror as they traced a neat line from the nose of his fuselage and into his canopy. It was the last thing he would see.

Major Stoltz, who minutes before had assumed command of the kampgruppe, reluctantly issued the order for his Panzers to fall back onto prepared defensive positions.

Revenge would have to come another day.

After "seeing" Goblin's forces, I'm convinced there is no way I could have pulled this one off. I had a formidable force remaining, but had taken more losses and also suffered several breakdowns.

There was no way I could pretend I didn't see his forces and continue my planned slow, methodical advance. His infantry heavy force was deployed in depth and he would have ground me down.

On the other hand, I couldn't just plot artillery on his positions and force a breakthrough, what's the fun in cheating?

I offered Goblin the victory, I honestly think he would have won had the game continued normally. Of course being the gentleman that he is, he refused.

Too bad it had to end like it did:mad:
looking forward to a rematch.:D  :D
