Spearhead in the Ardennes DCG error

Post by willy g »

I dont know if anyone else has had this problem, but about 80% of the time I try to start this campaign, it causes the game to stop working and crash, regardless of what nation, size, type of unit, and unit. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. Is there anything I can do?

I started mine up and played a couple moves, no problem.

I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell XPS410, desktop.

Wish I had some helpful tips, but I'll have to leave that for someone else.

willi g - is it just the Ardennes DCG that this happens on? At what point does it crash?

I have fired this one up several times without a hitch (I also designed it). Can you verify that all of the following files reside in your West Front folder:

It crashes as soon as I try to begin next mission the first time, as in playing the first scenario. I just pops up that wf.exe has stopped working. I am also running vista on a Dell E1505 notebook. If I try to play it after restarting west front, the mission loads, but says error reading either OOB file or BTL file, but despite my best efforts, I have been unable to replicate the problem in the last half hour of creating new campaigns. I checked and I have all 9 of the Spearhead in the Ardennes files, and everything seems to be in working order now, I guess the bug got scared b/c it knew the matrix forums were coming to the rescue [:D], if it happens again, I'll relay it here.

Thanks for the help and keep up the good work, and might I add, when the campaign runs, it is a very nice campaign, I was very excited to see the two new DCGs in west front and also have begun reading the 'create your own DCG' file, very interesting stuff. Very in depth heavy stuff too.

Thanks willy g, it's always good to hear from DCG fans.

For Spearhead I recommend loading the WF alternate winter terrain mod that came with 1.03, even though it won't be snowing much until the January battles.[;)]

Hi Vampir,

So I can figure out what's happening, can you please let me know:

what nationality and force size you selected?
what formation you selected?
how many missions played successfully?
At precisely what point does it crash?

thanks!

Hi Simovitch.
Nationality - german;
Force size - battalion or regiment;
Formations - PzDiv, SS PzDiv,Heavy tanks battalion(Heer or SS);
Mission played successfully - 0 or 1 to 4 mission(mostly) - many times if I try to start campaign, it causes the game to stop working and crash.
It crashes as soon as I try to begin next mission the first time, as in playing the first scenario. I just pops up that wf.exe has stopped working.If I try to play it after restarting west front, the mission loads, but says error reading either OOB file or BTL file. This problem describe willy g.
I haven't any problems with all remainning DCG and LCG in WF, EF and RS.
Game (Ardennes... campaign) crash on ver 1.03 and 1.04.
help...

We verified that an identical campaign file for this DCG runs fine on my machine but crashes on Vampir's machine. Although I am on XP and he is on Vista, I can't verify that being the issue.

It would be good to know if anyone has been able to play at least 5 missions with this DCG. During playtesting I played several straight through with no problems.

I didn't see this thread...does this relate to your concerns at all?

Thanks dravazed, that confirms my assumptions but only adds to the mystery.

Could you or someone with Vista please try the "Conquest of Greece" DCG and see if it works?

I'm starting to think that the variance from the 1 week standard may be the cause, but that doesn't explain why does it work in XP?

Probably because Vista is one of the worst MS systems ever as far as compatibility goes, missing DX9 files, missing DDraw functions, different driver model... only NT 3.51 and 4.0 were so bad for games... But nobody advertised them as gaming platform then...

Hi! "Conquest of Greece" doesn't work on Vista... It is identical problem like with "Spearhead in the Ardennes"...
All remaining DCG in WF, EF and RS works fine on my Vista machine... [:)]

I was able to begin playing Conquest of Greece, but did not stay with it long enough to see whether there would be a problem advancing to the next scenario, etc. I'm running Vista Home Premium, on a laptop I bought about 1.5 years ago. I have to run the Tiller games on compatibility for XP with desktop composition disabled...otherwise, I have more problems.

This game, even in its 1.04 incarnation, is NOT out of the woods with regard to Vista compatibility. That much is clear.

It's been awhile, and I haven't seen any response or indication that this is being looked into or that a fix is in the works, so my question is, when something like this is pointed out by multiple people--what happens next?

Maybe "when" is appropriate, as well. Thanks.

Hi Rich,

I Had Vista....please note the HAD....and both the Ardenne and Greece worked perfectly for me. Unfortunately, I had other problems with Vista and have subsequently down graded to XP Media So far, no CDT's, but have never had them with this game platform. MJTCS is the most stable game platform I have experienced thus far.

Yeah this one seems like a hardware related problem and since I don't have Vista - and both campaigns work 100% of the time for me, I can't go any further with this.

I tried a few fixes behind the scenes but they didn't help anyone.

Hardware? Not a software problem?

So...this is the end of it...it just doesn't work on VISTA, end of story?

I'll have to remember this, when I see Matrix games advertised as "VISTA compatible."

Works ok on my VISTA install. I am still waiting for it to crash so I can see what is going on.
