Couple questions

Post by rich12545 »

Is the resolution the desktop? If not, does it support 1280/1024?
Is there a zoom in/out when watching plays?

It looks like you set the play, the ai (offense or defense) sets the play and then you watch. Is this how it works?

Is there trading between teams?

Players and fields are all fictional. But there are mods. What mods are available for real historic teams?

I'm looking at this game and it's hard to see how it works without a demo. These are all the questions I can think of now but I will probably come up with more before making up my mind. Thanks for any help.

***Resolution is set in game. It has standard choices, although I dont think it's 1280/1024, it's an odd 1280/960 or something like that. You can also play in a window at fixed 800/600

Is there a zoom in/out when watching plays?
**No, just 4 views...
1)Behind QB
2)Directly over top
3)Sideline, kinda like if you were in the pressbox
4)Sorta same as 3, but even farther back, full view of field

It looks like you set the play, the ai (offense or defense) sets the play and then you watch. Is this how it works?
*You can coach, ie call plays
*Play with a gamepad like a Gravis
*Watch CPU v CPU

Is there trading between teams?
*No, not an actual trade feature. You can move players around manually, however.

Players and fields are all fictional. But there are mods. What mods are available for real historic teams?
*There are tons of uniforms and field art, both fictional and real world
*There are also a few rosters, including USFL, WFL, NCAA, NFL

Welcome to the forum, rich. A lot of dedicated guys here, always happy to help out.
Maximum Football is and can be a LOT of fun, especially for someone who likes to 'play in a sandbox' so to speak. Just try not to compare it to Madden. Very different creatures.
-Madden is 'What if you were an NFL owner/coach'.
-Maximum Football may have a few less features, but the possibilities of creating your own football universe or re-creating a real one(past or present), are fantastic.

hmmm, well one problem is the resolution.  I have a flat screen and it likes stuff run at its native or it sometimes doesn't look that good.  Without a demo I don't think I'd want to risk $40 which, being retired, is a lot for me.

Hey Rich

The flatscreen issue shouldn't be a make/break deal.  There are some good standard options in MaxFB and typically it does look pretty decent.  I haven't had too many issues and I run MaxFB on a bunch of different cpus.  Two are Dell LCDs and then I also put the sucker up on my 42" plasma on occasion without problems.  I also have utilized a Vaio laptop and an HP laptop that run some stuff for me and overall it works well on all of them.  To me one of the keys with MaxFB is that you need to hop in knowing that you're not seeing Madden visuals but what you are seeing is a competent game of football being played.

There are always going to be tradeoffs and with MaxFB that visuals tradeoff is the big one.  Most of the others are able to be worked around.

Welcome to the community, what you'll find here is unlike any other sim that I'm aware of in terms of being able to modify the underlying frame work and I think that's a huge advantage.

Thanks,

Mb

I really wish they would drop the price. I think a lot of people would be willing to take a shot at the game if it were say, $20-$25. With development ended, and a few bugs lingering(nothing bad, no game killers at all, but they are there), I dont see many people willing to fork over $40

And without the demo, I can understand the hesitation.

I will say, if a gamer isnt hooked on real world teams and players, then Max Football is a good purchase.

I like sports sims.  And play ootp.  Puresim, once I finally got it to work, at 1024x768 doesn't look good on my screen so I have doubts.  I never played madden as I don't care much for arcade games.  That's why I asked about how this works.  I think managing a team, picking the play and then watching how it develops would be cool.  But not with a graphics problem.  I think the best way to set resolution up in a game is simply to let it use the desktop.  Anything else makes no sense and can cost sales.

I play MaxFB on the highest resolution setting, but I set my monitor to 4:3 so that the screen isn't stretched out.  Your monitor should have that option also, if it's a widescreen.

It's not a wide screen.  It's a flat screen.  It looks best at its native resolution, 1280x1024.  Anything else sometimes looks good, sometimes not.  The War Engine at 800x600 (fixed res) looks ok.  Puresim at 1024x768 doesn't.  Go figure.  So anything that either doesn't use the desktop or doesn't offer the native res I need to try out first.  One thing with Matrix is their games rarely offer a demo.  Whatever excuse is really bogus since virtually every other company does.  So I always ask first.  Maybe at $15-20 I'd chance it but not at $40.

Yes, it is a COLOSSAL mistake to keep the title at $40! It is hurting sales and growth of the community (and all the positivies that go with it). The price should have been dropped long ago - who knows, it may have even indirectly (or directly) resulted in a version 3 being developed (pure conjection here on my part)...but at the least, it certainly would have put the game in far many more people's hands.

Blame Matrix on this one, I think...as I believe David wanted it priced lower.

But at the very least, the price needs to drop down now.

As it stands right now, I would guess that less than 300 people have the game (based upon thread reads) - and only a fraction of that (maybe 30-40, being generous) frequent the boards to read it...a disappointing situation that could improve.

I'd have to agree with Redwolf,
now that development is over and this is a final release
the price is way to high
the market these days calls for much graphics at these kinda prices
that maxfb just cant deliver.

now getting back to the original post, I play on a flat screen
and it results in problems for me

so if thats all thats stopping ya'.............. dont let it

yer, I get a few nasty screen jumps as the game loads up and again as I close it down when I've had enough for one day
but whilst playing......... no problems at all.
