OK – now why did my counter attack fail? I inflicted well over 50% more casualties on him.

Also what does no gas mean? It seems to always be listed on the CP side of the combat results table

You didn't take the hex because even with the reduced level of trenches due to the tanks he still has more than you do in the hex. Or to put it another way, even though he took more casualties his position is still strong enough that no withdrawal is necessary.

What about the "no gas" thing Frank. In one of my games I developed the 1st 2 levels of gas (green and yellow) 1st and used them with effect against my enemy. Then this notation showed up in 4 of my opponents attacks against me. He informed me that he had the option of loading poison into his artillery and bombarded me with same but it does not appear to have had any effect on combat. My understanding (which may well be wrong) was that if one side develops a particular poison 1st than the other side can not and then the race is on to develop the next level of gas. Am I wrong and in fact the side which did not develop the gas 1st must still develop it (even though it is useless) before he can go onto the next level of gas? If so then getting the lead in Gas research becomes very important in my opinion.

Also, as I said I developed Green-Cross Gas 1st and used it twice with good effect against my opponent. I then developed Yellow-Cross, which was good, except I never got to use my last two attacks with Green-cross. In other words my number of poison attacks permitted number went from 2 to 4 rather than 2 to 6 as I had expected. Is this working properly or a bug? If the former I guess the rule is "Use it or Lose it."

Yes, its use it or lose it. Once you get to a new gas level the old ones are replaced, not added to.

And yes, the side that gets to a gas tech level first is the only one that gets to use it.
but it does not appear to have had any effect on combat.

It does, it temporarily reduces the readiness of troops so if they're attacked in the same impulse as the gas was used the reduced readiness is an advantage for the other side.

As for the "no gas" checkmark, I'd have to look at that battle to see why it came up. I assume no gas was used?

What about if I have gas at one level with still a couple attcks remaining and my opponent (rather than me) develops the next level of Gas. Do my Gas attacks dissappear or do I still get my remaining 2 attacks with the "old" gas?

And yes, the side that gets to a gas tech level first is the only one that gets to use it.

This I knew. But does the side that did not develop that gas level first still have to develop/research it (even though he can't use it) before he can start developing/researching the next level of gas or does he skip this level of gas and just start researching the next level of gas?

It does, it temporarily reduces the readiness of troops so if they're attacked in the same impulse as the gas was used the reduced readiness is an advantage for the other side.

Yes, but what I meant is that my opponent told me that he had loaded a gas into his artillery and bombarded me with same, but that the "No- gas" box had a check in it (just like in Ulver's example above). My opponent is a novice like me so maybe he screwed up somehow and forgot to fire the artillery with the gas or something. But I still don't understand what the "no-gas" check mark means? I assume, like you, that it means no gas was used. But why does it show up at all? I do not recall seeing it in all the other numerous attacks where gas wasn't used, so why this time?

The "No Gas" checkbox denotes a rare occurrence. Its when the defender actually has a higher gas tech level than the side using the gas.

So defensive measures are considered to negate the effect.
Do my Gas attacks dissappear or do I still get my remaining 2 attacks with the "old" gas?

You still get to use your gas attacks but the above will happen
But does the side that did not develop that gas level first still have to develop/research it (even though he can't use it) before he can start developing/researching the next level of gas

Yes

So the side that gets the lead in gas research is likely to keep the lead (so long as the player puts a research point into gas each turn) and develop all 3 gases before his opponent. The only hope the side which falls behind has is to outluck his opponent and catch and pass him with research. As this is unlikely, it seems to me that if a player falls behind in gas research he might as well use his rersearch points in another area.

Pretty much, however, if the side with gas doesn't use his gas right away it may be ineffective a turn later when and if the other side catches up.

Is it enough to just "catch up" or do you have to catch up and pass the other player. For example, lets say the TE Player develops the 1st level of gas and is researching towards, but has not yet acquired, level 2 gas. The TE player still has 2 shots of level 1 gas left to use when the CP Player acquires tech level 1 gas. At this point both players have level 1 gas but the TE player still has the lead towards acquiring level 2 gas. Can the TE Player still use his remaining 2 shots of level 1 gas, or is this when you get that "no-gas" message?
