Map update question

I was attempting to set up a PBEM using the 'Kharkov' map by Brent Richards....its on the 5th page in the maps list (not the 'winter Kharkov' map on page 4). Its the best city map I've seen, but unfortunately through all the version updates its become corrupted; hexes which are clearly large buildings report that they are roads, buildings have a height of zero, etc.

What would be involved in 'updating' this map to work in v7.1? I've never done any map editing, so be patient if I'm asking a 'how do I get to the moon' question. ;)

I just checked and saw what you mentioned, and I think the map is OK.

First, elevations don't deal with buildings, just ground, so it's easy to have a building at elevation 0. Also, Brent was dealing with multi-hex buildings, and took the trouble to clear the road hexes so you can drive on them, even though some buildings seem to cover the road. Multi-hex buildings are a real pain when map-making, and it's much more common to find what looks like a road near one being a building instead, with bad results for your vehicles when you drive by! Always check your route hex by hex when driving near buildings.

With any map, what you see is not always what you get. (As for that building at hex 52,15, what you're looking at is an overhang of the building that vehicles drive under. :))

Using the map editor is a lot of fun, and the best way to to just choose a map and start playing with it. Just don't save it.
Retreat is NOT an option.

Really? I always thought buildings in SP were higher than the surrounding hexes. One thing that was confusing me was when I placed a unit in a multihex building and its LOS would penetrate several hexes...then I realized the interior of the building was one, continuous open space (like a factory).

I gave the 'winter Kharkov' map another look and see that the buildings, roads and elevations are more what I expected.

I'll give the map editor a spin; thanks.
