RE: World War III project.
Although i have updated the scenario now and then i havent uploaded the latest changes. But know i uploaded it to the scenario bank. Among the changes i included a briefing in word format in the download.
Here is the complete briefing. Looks strange here, but really nice in word.
World war III – West vs East

1. Background

Overview. This scenario simulates a hypotetical third world war between NATO and the warsaw pact in 1986. In the middle of the 1980s fighting intensified in the African Horn between the Soviet backed Somalia government with the support of the Peoples republic of Yemen and the NATO backed regimes of Sudan and Eritrea. At the same time Soviet were expulsed from Afghanistan by the west aided Mujahedin.

After an incident involving the death of some soviet military advisors in Ethiopia tensions become high. Small skirmishes start on the turkish and german borders. Not waiting untill the USSR gains initiative the NATO high commande decide to take action.

Not surprisingly much of US pacific allies decide to remain neutral to see in which direction the wind blows. Tired of their constant wars Pakistan and India decide to not participate in the fighting. Most countries in middle and south america also remains neutral.

2. Combatants & Importand events

On the side of USSR and PDRC fights fights Vietnam, Laos, Cambodja, Cuba, North Korea, some of the Arab Nations, Nicaragua and Ethiopia.

On the side of NATO and USA fights Afghan guerillas, Japan, Australia, Israel, Sudan, Somalia, Cyprus, Thailand, Malaysia and Panama.

- On turn 2 Israel Joins USA
- On turn 2 The Arab Nations joins USSR.
- On turn 2 NATO gets access to sabotage and fortification events.
- On turn 3 Peoples Republic of Korea joins PDRC.
- On turn 4 the USSR gets sabotage action card.
- On turn 5 NATO gets morale boost action card.
- on turn 12 NATO and USSR recieves an aditional sabotage & morale boost card.
- After turn 8 there is a 10 % chance each turn that Sweden joins NATO or Yugoslavia USSR.

Special Units and events
- The USSR can buy spetznaz paratrooper brigades with 1 Long range transporter each in Moscow (10PP). Spetznaz brigades are paratroopers that can carry 6 turns of supply and have characheristics of a lvl 4 scout. They can destroy bridges and hide well.
- USA can buy Stealth Bombers in New York (20PP). Stealth bombers function as allround tactical and strategic bombers and also have ok fighter qualities. They also have an extreme long range.
- The USSR can deploy submarine packs in different locations in the Barents Sea (20PP).
- USA can deploy Mujaheddin units in different locations in Afghanistan. They are overpowered for their cost but defensive in nature (10PP).
- China can incite uprisings in various pacific countries through three different action cards(5-10PP). This generally causes the regimes to join USA or NATO, but places guerilla units inside the countries.
- NATO can through different action cards take advantage of their people by erecting fast fortifications (10 PP) or sabotaging the USSR war efforts in europe (10 PP). The sabotage actions also deploy special forces infantry, The fortifications event provides an extra engineer unit.
- NATO can also use an action card (25 PP) to call for african allies and align Marocko, West africa and South Africa with NATO. This however means that Namibia and Tanzania become controlled by the USSR.
- USSR can play an actioncard (10 PP) that tries to sabotage the readiness of NATO units. There is a 20 % chance for each NATO unit to have a 50 % readiness reduction. Card becomes available on turn 4 & 12.
- NATO can by turn 4 play an actioncard (10PP) that increases morale of NATO units by 10 %. Additional card comes at turn 12.
- NATO can play actioncards (4PP) to deploy a unit of 1 AWACS radar recon airplane in London. The AWACS has no offensive capability but an extremely long range and a exceptional recon value of 900.

3. Map & Locations

Map. The map wraps and is drawn in 2 scales – a smaller scale for Europe and the Atlantic and a larger scale for Eastern Asia, the Pacific, and North America. A few land types have been added – ‘big sea’, ‘big land’, and ‘impassible’. These types have been added to manage the distortion associated with a 2 scale map and maximize the playing space of the game.

Locations. A simplified location structure has been added. Cities can produce 0, 2, 4, 8, or 16 k in production points. There is also a resource hex that can produces 2k in supply or pp and a factory hex that produces 2 k and can be built (cost 60 pp or a 15 month payback). Note that the vp of the hex is also the same as the production value of the hex (divided by 1000). A military base location has also been added. This is a combination of a port and an airbase.

4. Victory Conditions
Each of the superpowers has to capture roughly 100 VP more than they had from the start to win the scenario. If one superpower wins its ally share the victory. A couple of cities are worth 50 VP:s. These are Paris, London, Leninggrad, Kiev, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney and New York.

Victory Points Beginning Victory
NATO 210 320
USSR 198 310
PDRC 132 240
USA 274 390

5. Research

Research. R&D has been simplified. There are now 10 research tracks – basic infantry, heavy infantry, specialized infantry, guns, armor, fighters, bombers, ships, submarines, and carriers. These tracks cover multiple sftypes (e.g., armor covers light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, and tank destroyers). There are still 4 levels of research.

Research cost is doubled. Each country starts with 200 political points.

USA starts with lvl 2 fighter and bomber technology, USSR start with lvl 2 guns technology. NATO starts with lvl 2 fighter technology. PDRC starts with lvl 2 submarine tecnology. Starting units are not upgraded though.

6. Units & Peoples

Units. The scenario uses the standard unit set up. There is a lot of modifications and additions though, these include:

- Bazookas are called Anti Tank Infantry, Dive bombers and level bombers are called Tactical and Strategic bombers. Ships also renamed Frigate, Destroyer DDG-class and Cruiser CG-class
- Tactical-bomber ship and sub combat values dramatically reduced.
- Carrier carry capacity reduced
- BB (Cruiser CG-class) artillery range reduced to 1 hex
- AA range capped at 2 hexes
- Supply cost 2 pp
- Ship speed is quintupled
- Air speed is increased by 40 %
- Armoured cars are replaced with APC which can carry 10 INF.
- Strategic bombers have increased range.
- Anti Air infantry is added. They some, but less Anti Air capability than Flak, and behave like rifles in other aspects. They cost 500PP.
- Carrier Air. This is a combination fighter (though weaker than land based fighter) and has strong anti – ship and sub combat values. It is light and can fit on carriers like standard planes on standard CVs.
- Rocket Artillery. Lvl 2 artillery with range of 1 that move as trucks and can carry 5 INF.
- Trains. Cheaper than trucks but limited to roads
- Ship hulls. Capital ships (CG, BB, CV) can no longer be built directly. Players must build a hull. Once built, there is a 10% chance per month that the ship will be complete.
- Partisans. Weak infantry units that can live of the land for some turns. Can only be created by certain events.
- Yuan T039 SSG:s. Slightly better than other submarines. Can only be built by the chinese.
- Special forces infantry, long range transports, stealth bombers.
- AWACS radar recon planes. NATO starts with 2 of these and USSR and USA with 1 each. New ones can only be created by NATO by action cards se below).
- NATO, USSR ( & USA) in cities with european population can produce Reserve infantry, They defend like rifle, weaker on attack and are lightly worse. They are cheaper and uses less supply.

Special Peoplegroups
- The Israeli forces fight with a 20 % combat increase.
- The Vietnamese fight with a 20 % combat increase
- The people of Namibia & Mozambique have 20 % lower base morale.
- Europeans these cities can produce reserve infantry. All NATO starting territorry is european. US bases in Europe is also european as well as Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian, Chech & Baltic Cities including Leningrad.

7. Other

For the scenario to work properly WAW should probably be installed.

Looking forward to an AAR of this game! Good work Grymme.
RE: World War III project.
Thanks. If you want a sneak preview you can look in our test game in opponents. Its without pictures. But still something. We have played 8 or so turns and the battles have raged back & forth.

30+ scenarios, maps and mods for AT and AT:G
RE: World War III project.
Made some small changes today.
- Changed WAW pictures to WWIII pictures to try and remove dependance on WAWscenario.
- Made cost of Anti Air Infantry 400 and beefed up their Anti Air defense a little.
- Changed Cuba initial production from 1k supply & 4 PP to 2k supply
- Changed Arab & Israel intervention pictures to more relevant ones
- Changed PP cost of stealth bombers from 20 PP to 30PP (they should at least not be cheap)
- Fixed some researchcosts.
- Changed names of AWACS Recon Airplane to AWAC R Air and T039A Yuan Class Sub to T039A Yuan Class SSN
- Gave T039A Yuan Class SSN more hitpoints
- Made Bornholm USA Military base with Border Brigade on it (this could be interesting).
- Put AWAC units on 5% retreat from the beginning, also put some artillery units on 25 % retreat (Varna!)
- Have Made Jakarta & Borneo 2k production cities instead of resources to give NATO at least some chance of defending the Pacific (they now have 3 cities and 1 resource instead of the opposite).
- Made Sandinist brigade & Panama Border Brigade scouts instead of SMGs (to give them some more supply & better movement in the harsh terrain)
Also interested in input on the following possible additions:
- Possibility to attack/drag india into the conflict on the NATO/USA side
- something in south america on the USSR/PDRC side
- making Canada NATO-land
- Something with Libya and/or Saudiarabia
- Something to make USA be more involved in the conflict in Europe (possible bases for USA. Any suggestions?)
- Weather in the scenario? Yes or no?

RE: World War III project.
Well,
You could always model the India/Pakistan conflict. Possibly the same way you said you handled Sweden and Yugoslavia.
South America probably makes sense for the scene of a Soviet/US conflict. Lots of rebel activity going on there in the 80's if I remember right. Not to mention the Falklands conflict had occured only a few years earlier in '82.
Not sure on the rest.

I see that this is now in the pending approval area on the community site. Is it waiting for approval now?
Thanks,

Hi Rick. The scenario is still in the making. (although playable). Ill let you know when its up for approval (it seems the system moves it automaticly).
Thanks for good support

RE: World War III project.
Yeah, I think the default for that drop down is to set it to "for Approval" - I've been following the threads and thought perhaps you still had a few things you were wanting to check first. I did go ahead and check the zip and it looks like that is fine, and as far as I can tell it isn't relying on other mods which is good.
I went ahead and moved it back to sandbox, but let me know when you think its ready -
(By the way - play a couple of turns vs AI - on my machine AI took 20-30 min but seemed to function fine and the Arab and Israeli events appeared as expected in the 2nd turn.
Thanks!
Rick
RE: World War III project.
Rick: I will. And ill get to that picture in Weserubung, at least eventually.
My idea for simulating Indo-pakistani conflict.
On turn 5 PDRC gets actioncard (10 PP) that makes India join USA & Pakistan join PDRC. On turn 8 USA gets the same actioncard (but for 30 PP). The idea is that PDRC has a couple of turns of initiative and can attack first with pakistani army for a few turns (they are slightly weaker). If they dont do it the USA gets the chance also and it gets to be a chicken race were both parties can pull the trigger.
India
1 4K city, 2 2k cities. 1 large navy, 1 naval air corps, 1 air corps 3 HQ:s, 7 infantry corps, 2 armoured corps, 1 artillery corps.
Pakistan
1 4 k city, 1 2 k city. 1 small navy, 1 small wolfpack, 1 naval air corps, 2 HQ:s, 5 infantry corps, 2 armoured corps, 1 artillery corps,
Also made Sri Lanka part of the Pacific countries with an infantry brigade on it. Added in infantrycorps to PDRC in Himalaya. Ps. it was hell trying to flesh out the Indian subcontintent with Pakistan on it with so little room.

RE: World War III project.
I am honestly starting to feel that the main features of this scenario is starting to be ready. There are so many actioncards, strange events & special units that i think adding more will most likely not enhance the scenario but instead make bizarre.
The major final additions (after adding the Indo-pakistani war include.
- Adding Libya who has a 10 % chance of joining USSR after 8th turn.
- Adding reinforcement actioncards for USSR & PDRC. They can spend PP to send reinforcements to eachother. USSR sends armoured corps to PDRC. PDRC sends infantry corps to USSR.
- Beefing up the sandinist a little.
- Adding Sri Lanka with army, navy & airforce to the Pacific country (but also adding the Tamil Tigres with navy to the PDRC).
- Changing some event & actioncard pictures.
- Giving Canada to NATO from the beginning. I think this gives NATO a little staying power. USA can do without & it might make for some more atlantic convoys (possible).

RE: World War III project.
You might want to hand the India card to NATO instead, as it's more likely India would join the UK rather than the US. May be a bad solution from a game balance standpoint?

RE: World War III project.
I agreee with this as it will give the NATO player a chance to interact with the PDRC.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

I agree that NATO might be a closer partner historicly. But USA seemed better from a balance perspective. I wanted the US to have a lasting land front somewhere.
Actually India was allied to USSR for part of the Cold war & Pakistan was a western ally. But then we have the Chinese/Indian war somewhere in the 70s when India might have been more western oriented. So historicly they could probalbly both go either way. But gamewise that would only add another part of the continent to the communists. The other way around seems more fun, and no less historical.

In WWIII game 2 I got this window when planning supply and unit purchase, which proves that NATO intelligence is doing quite well behind enemy lines:

Small update to WWIII-East vs West
During the last months there have been some small bugs found out (Rainer and Lunaticus found them i think)
Took a look at this old (relativly) scenario. Almost cried when i saw how bad my codewriting was at that time.
Well some small changes.
- Sub ASW value bug should be fixed.
- Minor nations joined double message bug should be fixed
- Added 2 scenario options. USSR/PDRC political advantage. Checking either of these options will give the named regime 5 PPs extra each round. Also updated the briefing. (since almost no one has been able to win as USSR).
Nice to see that the scenario is still being played.
New version WWWv63 uploaded to the scenario bank.
Cheers.
