What is this about?

TF 211 encounters mine field at Taan [Hainan] (37,41)

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 11 & Ch 12

Japanese ground losses:
20 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 2

NO landings - NO troop cargo - no battle. So what is going on here?

Was there damage to the ships at all? Were the land units in an adjacent land hex?Is this some kind of shrapnel effect??
