Replacement or Entrench?

Post by emcgman »

What conditions do you base either replacing a step, or entrenching a unit, especially when it is on the front line for your opponents coming turn.

Any other related advice on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

God knows.

My first game, I am spending learning the interface and flow. Getting my arse kicked.

Next game, I will concentrate more on tactics.

Even getting beat, I'm still enjoying the game. The battlefield is very fluid and the Germans are exploiting my ridiculous line of defence. Also, if I bolster a particular front where the Germans are a knockin, they seem to shift to a different part of the battlefield. That's how I'm seeing it anyway.

One thing I do see which seems odd...the Germans seem to spend quite a few action points on destroying Fortifications when they don't seem to need to. In other words, they seem to be moving from fortification to fortification destroying them when they could be used in the front line. Of course, thei is keeping me watching, 'cos I'm just thinking perhaps I can't see and he has a load of units behind those front line ones waiting to pour through and he's making the gap big enough to eliminate any penalties...you do get penalties moving through a hex next to a hex with a fortification, don't you?

4 movement penalties for each adjacent fortification, maximum of 12 movement penalties caused by fortification.

Replace the step, note the defense value and then hit "undo"

Entrench the unit, note the defense value and hit "undo".

When a unit is entrenched, the defender receives a shift in defence, so, no matter the result of the above experiment, it is usually better to entrench than replace a step.

If 2 units are stacked together, it is better if the weaker unit is entrenched - so you get that shift - ans replace the step of the other uniot.

Also, entrenching improves your indirect fire protection.

Joe and Carl, thanks greatly for the for the detailed information, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Hey Judge, as far as blowing strongpoints, right click the hex with the enemy strongpoint, and put the mouse over the actual strongpoint. They're worth victory points, so the AI is actually racking up victory points by blowing all your strongpoints!
