Getting Started again...

I am returning to playing WiTP after being away for a year or two. I would like to play the most acurate and improved version of the game. I like historical accuracy and a difficult opponent. However, I would like to start on a smaller scale than then entire conflict. What version of the game followed by what mod would let me play a scenario for starters? Also, can you choose to play a certain nationality instead of playing by zones with friendly AI? Thanks.

Been there .... done that. I would first get the latest version (1.806) if you can still find it. You could try one of the shorter games like "Coral Sea" to get your feet wet.
I spent a year off and on while I was rebuilding my system and had to reinstall the game and other software several times. You can not play ANY nation but can say play the Britts and let the computer play everything else. You can do the same with the Americans. I would play the long game from Dec 7 to the end as the allied player because I have trouble with the Jap production.
You could put the subs for both sides on computer with historical settings also.
