Joe, you are entirely right about my dad's finding the math portion of the game tedious. That was the point of his complaint. I find the math we have to do as just part of the joy of wargaming.

With 3rd Reich, you started out on one of their monster games. There have been a lot of excellent board wargames that did not take nearly as long to play out (a turn or a game).

Yes, every one of your complaints against those games are valid.

I can remember setting up many a solitaire game, only to immediately take it down. Sometimes I got my fix just by setting up the game...

A personal problem in our house was one cat of ours, Joe Hooker. He especially loved "1776" with its tall stacks of units which occupied a single hex. He would come dashing up to swat one of those stacks and then take off at full speed to avoid my wrath!!

Some of the games were about smaller actions and could be played through in a couple of hours. For the longer ones, there was a tedious method of saving the game: writing down every unit position on the board. Yep, I used to do that.

And we all still argue over rules interpretations, just read all the posts on this board!!! ;)

On the plus side, with the old boardgames you get to sit with your friend (or friends, my buddies and I used to do four way free-for-alls in Wooden Ships and Iron Men, Wings, and Airforce/Dauntless) and enjoy a day of eating, drinking (if that's your wish), and playing a game without exposing yourself to the computer monitor. There's a lot to be said for that...
fair winds,
Brad

Not only am I lazy period, I'm Color blind in one eye and have penta-focals for the other two. My ears can't hear my wife calling me away from the computer. I can't eat with my left hand and I keep sticking my right hand in a mousetrap for some reason.
No one told me this game would be bad for me socially, the dishes aren't getting done and the grass is over two feet high. I'm thinking of putting an airstrip down the middle of the yard pretty soon so I can get to the BBQ grill that's out there somewhere.
I've used all my vacation and I'm 7 hours in the hole in sick time at work. My handicap is going back up and I desperately need a haircut and change of underwear.
If Matrix doesn't come up with a patch or two to cure these problems I will probably miss football season too.
Help me Matrix, Could you start sending a handyman or clone kit (with a calculator of course) in each box.

Thanks,

Mark S.

Sounds like a growing need for GA (Gamers Anomonous) a seven step program to help addicted gamers get a real life. I'm going to join just as soon as I finish this next turn. :D :D

Can you join and play the game at the same time? That way everyone can bring their laptop to the meetings a play a few turns during those boring - "Hi I'm Admiral Spruance and I am a UVholic." speeches.:D
