New WiR wish list
What would we like in the remake of WiR?

RE: New WiR wish list
Just a couple of things:
- It should be allowed to change the equipment of the StuG-Abts;
- When having a large amount of Fw 190As in stock, they should not start replacing all fighter units in sight, including fighter-bombers like the Fw 190Fs.
- Modify the map so that it is not that easy for a German player to take Leningrad or Moscow. Essentially make the lines of supply a little bit longer.
- Decrease the starting supply rate from ten to eight, so that both players have the same rate by August instead of September.
Other than that, I think the game is pretty good given two good players.

RE: New WiR wish list
As regards modifying the map to give balance to the Soviet side, I have shown this map before, but this map stops the Russian collapse when Moscow is lost. The effect is not to slow the Germans down, but to allow the Russians to keep the power to fight on without Moscow, as I am sure they would have. The map has rail tracks north of Moscow, for which there is some evidence in books and charts. With this map, a concentrated German strike at Moscow is not enough to win in 1941 and makes for a more realistic game. [:)]

Personally, I'd like to see more control over the economic aspects of the game (al-la WITP Japanese side). I'd like to be able to trade off aircraft production for ramping up tanks, or vice versa, or spend money on abstracted "naval" assets which would reduce the garrison requirements in the west and italy, etc.
RE: New WiR wish list
- some realistic tank movements (king tiger moving less in the same time as a t34)
- more balanced air model (overkill now, not in losses but in readiness loss, and airfield attacks are overpoewered)
- giving some beef for soviet guards divisions (more base exp)
- no soviet ploting penalty!, drop the exp and readiness, but 41 is a luck game right now

RE: New WiR wish list
A decent UI -- windows based would be fine but I'd prefer a cross platform one.
* Allow windowed and non-windowed (full screen) mode.
* Support all different screen resolutions, not just the 1024x768 which many games seem to be stuck on (why would I buy a 24" monitor to play at 1024x768?)
* Click and drag to move, or left-click to select, right click to plot (not left-click left-click which seems to infest some games -- you never know whether you're selecting or plotting).

The ability to list Korp/Armies and units attached. Maybe filterd by Group/Front etc.
Full mose control isn't necessary ( I use the keys) the interface is a bit cumbersome and could be improved.

My new WiR wish list:
- possibility to change between windowed and full screen mode
- no use of dice to determine random events (like other Matrix games)
- possibility to save during mid turns (correction of the present Wir's bug) so that a cooperative PBEM can be started (like other Matrix games).
- not too much micromanagement, so that playing a turn doesn't take too much time
- game still playable in turns, not real time

I would like to have the readiness loss after an attack, defense or move be different for each AFV. The factor would be the speed and reliability of the vehicule.
For example, a PzII, T60 or Puma would loss 10%, a PZIV, PZV or T34 - 20% and a kingtiger, KV or IS2 up to 50%.
That will reflect what heavy tanks are good to : make a hole and let medium tanks race in the breakthrough.
I would also like to have a more detailed supply system. One that would allow the choice to have units at blirkrieg level (for all war and not only 6 weeks) but at the corst of other unitys starving or not receiving winter gears. That would require a pool of supply points and fuel points. Recovering readiness would have a different cost for each type of unit.
RE: New WiR wish list
Need an "oops" command for moves only. Players should be able to retract single moves that don't change anything else.
More emphasis on artillery bombardment. Artillery was the Russian "God of War".
Need a "Hitler/Stalin" option. Players should choose whether to subject themselves to Hitler and Stalin's whims.
More detailed battle reports for PBEM. The unit names should be shown at least to the division level.

RE: New WiR wish list
Another thing I'd like to have in the new Wir is to look at the final result of a turn before I send it to my opponent. It would be interesting to have a "global" look of how the battle was.

The date format.
In UV and WitP, the date format is: 2/5/1942
A better date format is: 2 May 1942.

RE: New WiR wish list
I will try not to put anybody to sleep[>:] with my post [:D]
I appologize if any of this has been covered already in other posts.
I have not had access to the game in almost a year and a half and unfortunatley still do not have access to it[:(], so perhaps some of my memories of game mechanics may be a little out of date; if so once again please accept my appologies.
What about the possibility of using captured equipment?
Both the Germans and the Soviets relied on the use of captured enemy war stocks.
I.E. When a Korps/Army is retreated and the opposing player moves into that hex some enemy stock should be reusable...perhaps 5-10% of all gun losses (Artillery, Flak, A-T) should be recoupable by the winning forces. Same with the Tanks/Stugs/SPG's, etc..
Could they be counted just like the Czech tanks as say Pz. 34r's, etc.
Upgrade paths for equipment?
In 3.3 the Pz IVs all upgrade in '44 to Pz IVj, should the Pz III, or Stug IIIb not do the same? I like the fact that the Pz II and Pz 35t/38t/38tE convert to Marder series. Would it be possible for the Pz IIIs to upgrade to the most efficient model of Pz III or perhaps to the latest upgrade to the Stug? Same question for the Stug IIIb, possibilities for upgrade to the IIIg model?
The cost of German tanks.
Historically, yes the cost of the Tiger was roughly double the cost of a Pz IV, but the cost of the Panther was; suprisingly, only 20-25% more than the cost of a comparable year model of the Pz IV! Could the game cost be changed to reflect such a cost difference? As opposed to the prohibitvely high cost charged for the Panther now?
Why is the cost of the Nashorn so high? It was built on a Pz IV chassis with an open superstructure, wouldn't the cost be comparable to that of the Stug at least?
These are the things that really stuck in my rusty bucket.

More control over air missions. When playing on the defensive, it would help to be able to place CAP over specific locations, e.g. Moscow. As it is now, CAP fighters intercept any air attacks within 7 squares of HQ. Sometimes this is all right, other times not.
1/2 the fighters assigned Escort missions during the your turn automatically fly CAP during the opponent's turn. This is not always desirable. The same applies to all bombers flying interdiction.

RE: New WiR wish list
In WIR wasn't there a sort of special supply for some korps/armies, connected to the HQs?
This was a dull clickfeast every single turn.
IMO the most tedious aspect of the whole game.

RE: New WiR wish list
Special supply has a couple of drawbacks -
1) It's possible to special supply a unit more than once by changing its HQ. The game should prevent this by keeping track which units down to the reigiment level have been special supplied.
2) Visual indicators (such as color change) are needed to show if a unit has been special supplied.

RE: New WiR wish list
However in version 3.3, units cannot benefit from special supply more than once per turn by simply changing HQ. Then units concerned need to use the CHANGE command to selelct a different Korps or Army to do so. One mitigating factor is that those units now can move or plot in their turn.
RE: New WiR wish list
CORRECTION - I meant to say CANNOT move or plot in their turn.
RE: New WiR wish list
Right, what I should have said is: it is possible to double supply sub-units (divisions, regiments, brigades). They can be special supplied within a unit (Korps or Army) then transferred into another unit and supplied again.
