xxx player has tried to copy log files? PBEM cheat message.

Post by Appren »

In one of my current games we got the message that "muslim commune has been screwing around with log files. He has been attempting to copy logs."

What does this mean? I, being the "Muslim commune" in this game, haven't done anything different than usual, saving games and loading new ones.

First, it could be some kind of glitch. Secondly, there are a couple of things that can trigger that message besides the obvious: 1) playing your turn on a computer different than the one you started with, or 2) playing with other players where some are using version 1.2.0 and one or more others are using some other version.

Personally, I've seen this once or twice since upgrading to 1.2.0 and I'm wondering if a regression has slipped in.

@appren,

the message means the programm cannot find the directory "masterlogdir" which should be present directly in the "bin" directory.

however the programm should create a new one if it is missing. could it be by any chance you are running Vista?

kind regards,
vic

Yes, this was on my laptop, which runs Vista. Strange that it should go missing suddenly though, I had played several turns on that PC. [:)]

Thanks for the answer.

@appren,

no no. it probably is not missing. But my code is unable to delete and create the directory.
this is probably due to your user-account is not the "Administrator" account... could that be the case?

thanks for taking the time to report the issue.

kind regards,
Vic

@appren,

i will look into this for future titles i'll make. But to solve your problem for now, you know what you gotta do... you have to play on a machine where you got a administrators account if you want the cheat protection to work correctly.

sorry for the inconvenience and happy gaming!

Vic, I had this same problem recently, I was running on an XP machine with admin rights. The game license got wonky somehow when I tried to load it and it said it couldn't load. I was using the "quick start" option and when I tried it again, I used the start menu option and it loaded fine without license warning messages but I got that "been screwing with the logs" mesage.

It isn't really a problem, I know I am not cheating, and I am pretty sure my opponent isnt either, was merely curious about the message :)

Well, it was more than a little suprise to be accused by some program of cheating and screwing with the logs. Of course I wasn't doing either and others told me they had had the same message and not to worry.

The point is, the program itself was doing whatever screwing around was being done, and it shouldn't accuse the user of something it did to itself !

@jeffrey,

(1) could you have 2 different installs on different places on your harddrive?

(2) about the program accusing you. sorry there. the program is just doing what is has been told by the programmer. so in the end its my fault.

kind reg,

Not on the same hard drive but on two different comps yes I do have.

Yes, I understand the nature of the 'fault', ultimately NP of course, a very small matter. It was a bit unnerving to have a program acsribe intentions to actions with some verve and spirited language. But NP ultimately.

It was a feeling I've had before in gaming, once when I was playing Rise of Nations I got nuked by the Germans, had an amazing effect on my psyche to have been nuked by a computer, something like the Terminator or SkyNet or something like that. Kind of eerie.

Hi Jeffrey,

Loading a running game on a different computer then where you played your last turn on will cause the game to think you are "screwing with your log files".

Again apologies for the undiplomatic message text :)

kind regards,
Vic
