Mods - Ideas for some "Chrome"

Post by JeffroK »

My turn to put forward some improvements (IMHO) to the game. Some maybe of interest to modders, its just as likeley to be a load of drivel.

Based on Scenario CHS155 I have added a bit of chrome and made some adjustments which I am trialling.

I have added HMS, HMAS, USS, IJN etc to combat ships and maybe later will add SS to US Cargo & MV to British cargo ships. This, IMHO, gives a better feel to the names, USS Enterprise, HMAS Arunta, HMS Illustrious etc and aids in identifying those British ships eligible for withdrawal. Plus you could sort by name and see all RN, RAN etc ships.

Removed the USAAF nicknames from Japanese aircraft and put in either the Japanese name or the aircraft type, changed LCU from Divison, Regiment etc to the Japanese appellation.
I have taken the No. from the start of CW squadrons ( 5 Squadron RAF replaces No. 5 Squadron RAF ) I don’t believe this was in use by the Commonwealth Sqns. , and it makes them easier to find in the air unit search.

I added US Div nicknames, pure Chromium!, plus identified the Puerto Rican & Colored Rgts etc

I Tidied up various names .eg 7th British Armoured Tank Bde. To 7th British Armoured Bde. This meant taking off the unit type from many units, I cant see anything broken yet.

Created .30cal & .30cal nose guns and fitted them to US aircraft and replaced the .303 used in CHS.
NZ Cavalry Brigades are renamed Mounted Infantry Brigades.

Not yet done, I will create some low strength LDV squads (Local Defence Volunteers) both infantry & mounted infantry, to allow the creation of “Home Defence” Units for Australia, New Zealand & India. The idea would be to provide Brigade strength units for each City in these countries, anchored by fortifications and with little heavy support so that it will be impossible for small raids to sneak in to the rear and capture major cities. They will represent garrisons, LDV, Reinforcement camps etc

Just Fiddling
Militia units in Australia & New Zealand begin at full strength, IRL they were at about 25% and would take till April 42 to approach 100% of TOE, so they start at 25%.

Adjusted various aircraft armament & bombloads.

Make all bombs an accuracy of 5. & GP bombs effect x 50%, AP bombs effect x 33%. Some exceptions eg 4000lb cookie. I haven’t seen this cause any problems, but also haven’t seen any earthquake raids by Heavy Bombers.

Halved torpedo accuracy. Ships still get sunk.

Introduced 3”, 5” & 60lb rockets & adjust rocket values and fixed the LCS(R) problem. Listed them as PGM rather than aircraft cannon. They do work, how effective??? Still testing.

Trialling Drop Tanks.

I will add a couple of bases in Australia, Nhill, Mildura, Wagga, Tamworth, Evans Head, Bowen, Bundaberg, & look at USA & India/Burma. (Pegu?) The map designers didn’t allow for big campaigns in OZ or India, CHS improved a bit but I still believe the potential for the RAAF to use bases in Southern Australia is underestimated.

I want the RAF/RAAF to have a small Tactical Recce ability before the Mosquito arrives. IRL they used detachments of Hurricanes(RAF) or Lancer/Lightning(RAAF) to provide a short range coverage. So I created a Hurricane PR aircraft to equip recce flights, 28 Sqn RAF& 1 RIAF Sqns (or all Lysander Sqns?) & RAAF 1PRU with P43-P38 flights.
T
he USAAF runs short of P40E’s while the RAAF seems to have plenty, so I increased P40E production out of Kittyhawk I. 10 per mth for starters. To be tweaked a bit to get a balance.

Give DEI Kittyhawk I upgrade rather than Kittyhawk III, if the Allies have enough Kittyhawk I’s they should be able to upgrade the Dutch.

The Beaufort I seems to be underarmed, maybe based on early war fitting, to get 2x Vickers K FF, 2 x Browning .303 FF, 2 x Vickers K in turret, 2 x Vickers K beam guns/ ?? rearward firing mgs in cupola. Beaufort VIII with 2 x .50cal FF.
I
n CHS155, the Stranraer is armed with .50cal, all my records show this should be the Vickers K. maybe some Canadian aircraft upgunned??

I’m looking further at the armament of the early war fighters, some seemed armed at the original model level while those that saw service had received upgrades.

I also use USSR slots for any needed slots (except for land bases) IMHO they take up a lot of room for a small amount of return. To limit the Kwantung Army, all LCU in Manchuria get fortifications to anchor them in place.
