I believe the Royal Navy CV Furious was sunk on September 14, 1939 by a U-Boat. Possibly on September 15. Ironically, it was out on anti-U-Boat patrol, and really it didn't have much chance of ever sinking a U-Boat, as it had no depth charges on board. I might have the name wrong, it might have been the Courageous, I forget which.

The British destroyer used to rescue prisoners from the Altmark was the HMS Cossack.

Q: What happened to the first two British planes to attempt to drop bombs on a submarine?

Warspite 1

Wrong date but at the second attempt the right ship. Ark Royal was narrowly missed on the 14th but poor Courageous and
518 men were not so lucky 3 days later. You were right re her mission - she was on anti u-boat patrol...

The first two planes were Skua`s that were downed by the blast from their own bombs - the FAA had not got the techniques right for sinking u-boats at that stage!

I think I asked that question earlier in this thread maybe?

The planes were hit when their bombs bounced off the water and exploded in the air. This was somewhat fortunate for every one involved in the first incident, because the RAF was bombing a British submarine. In the second incident, the U-Boat captured the aircrew and took them to Germany! It took the Allies quite some time to learn how to sink a U-Boat with an airplane. WiF gets this fairly wrong in the interests of playability.

10. Why was Grand Admiral Raeder so annoyed by the torpedoing of the merchant ship Athenia by U-30 in September 1939?

Just went through my email account and found that I've recieved answers to these ones there.
J.G.N's answers;

1. Operation Fork (May 10, 1940) was the Allied invasion of Iceland.
2. Operation Menace (September 23-25, 1940) was the Allies unsuccessful attempt to capture Dakar, French West Africa (now Senegal).
3. HMS Victorious was Loaned to the US fleet November 20, 1942 and refitted at Norfolk. She then served from February-August 1943 with the US Pacific Fleet.
4. Task Force 58.5 (March-May 1944), the USS Saratoga and three destroyers were loaned to the Eastern Fleet.
5. Two Japanese cruisers IJN Mogami and IJN Mikuma collided with each other after Midway.
6. Operation Cerberus the "Channel Dash" (February 11-13, 1942) consisted of the Battlecrusiers Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen, 6 destroyers, 14 torpedo boats, and 26 E-boats.
7. At the Battle of Calabria (July 9, 1940) HMS Warspite hit RN Giulio Cesare from 21,500 meters away.
8. On February 16,1940 a boarding party from the destroyer HMS Cossack freed British seamen from the German supply ship Altmark.
9. The battleship HMS Royal Oak was sunk at Scapa Flow on October 14, 1939 was the first of the five Royal Navy battleships and battlecruisers lost in WWII.
10. The U-30 sighted the unarmed passenger ship SS Athenia and fired two torpedoes her hull without warning. The attack was in violation of the prize rules U-boats were to be operating under, that obliged them to stop and search potential civilian targets and allow passengers and crew to abandon ship before sinking their vessel.

He also made me aware of a fact that I was unaware of - quite surprising info

And on account of me being too tired to take anything too serious atm - I know of WWI and WWII, but WW11? [:D]

The source I used, Richard Woodman - The Real Cruel Sea - reckons it was not a British submarine they were attacking but U-30 (of Athenia fame) on the 11th September. The two Skuas were from Ark Royal and were too low, so that when their bomb exploded, it blew their tails off. In this version, both rear-gunners were killed but the two pilots were taken prisoner.

I can't remember where I read about the first incident....I'll take a look at the pile of recently read WWII volumes. Probably, though, it was in Len Deighton's "Blood, Tears and Folly: An Objective Look at World War II", which uncovers a lot of rather dumb things the British did during WWII. Since it was a friendly fire incident, that one was probably never revealed publicly until decades later.

But yes, the second incident was an attack on U-30...that kapitan had quite an interesting career of (in)famous U-boat incidents.

I did not realize they flew Skuas from carriers...I guess that would be how some Skuas made it to Norway to sink the Konigsberg?

The Skua`s that sunk Konigsberg were land, not carrier based. They were flying at their extreme range from Hatston airfield in the Orkneys.

I think the Erebus and the Terror were involved in one of the 19th Century Arctic expeditions. Franklin's perhaps?

Correct. Recently read two excellent books about the Arctic expeditions:
The Arctic Grail: The Quest for the Northwest Passage and The North Pole, 1818-1909 by Pierre Berton
Lady Franklin's Revenge: A True Story of Ambition, Obsession, and the Remaking of Arctic History by Ken McGoogan

We may all live to see the Northwest Passage navigable year round at the present rate.

I will have to look for those two books. I knew this particular answer because nearly a year ago I picked up Resolute: The Epic Search for the Northwest Passage and John Franklin, and the Discovery of the Queen's Ghost Ship by Martin W. Sandler. A fascinating book about the history of Arctic exploration. Despite the title, it is not focused solely on the Franklin Expedition, hence my guess of the Franklin Expedition was an educated guess, but not a sure thing.

If you are interested in the subject, I do recommend the book.

B52 is also a drink but I fail to see how it lives up to its name

If you mix & drink the B-52 correctly you will be standing for 3 rounds, and then you are bombed to bits.
The clue is that it is a shot, in a longdrink glass. [8D]
