Firstly, I was not accusing Nemo of deliberately not using PP's in his attack on Hanoi. We had email correspondence about this some time ago and agreed to allow free movement. But today we renegotiated and he will pay PP's to troops on offensive duties in Indo-China. I didn't ask for this, he offered. My point is that in a HR restricted game, this large troop force attacking probably wouldn't have occurred at this early stage..
My other concern would be that this would allow the accumulation of PP's and the freeing of AUS/NZ troops and cause me concern in the DEI/Sth Pacific.
Hanoi and Haiphong are bombed, but the Allied airforce has moved on ... Bangkok is bombed again. When he finally gets Rangoon all will be lost in this theatre. I was in two mind today, whether to try to salvage Rangoon by taking back Ye, or trying to take back Port Blair and then back to Ye, with 2 DIV I have nearby. I think I have gone the wrong way, but time will tell.

A couple of thoughts 0148:
IMO high level 4E attacks are far too effective. Not sure the game engine handles them realistically, but even if it does it makes the game pointless as there is no counter. Even if this were true to life it makes for little fun.
Might be worth checking what ceilings the planes in your game have. I have come across various mods in which PE-2's are immune to attack because they have a ceiling 5 or 6K ft over the real life value (which is around 28K IIRC). Again the game handles this attacks badly. The planes dive from 30K+ ft and deliver a bomb at 2k. They should at the very least be vulnerable to attack on their way back out, but aren't.
Also found, for example, in CHS that Japanese fighters had their ceiling values reduced from stock and from quoted stats. There may be good reasons for this, but again if it enables a trump all tactic then it is bad news.
All in all, any game I play has a house rule that no attacks are made from above 30,000 ft. May be something you want to chat with Nemo about, or not if you are a purist (or masochist).

RE: Sit Rep May '42
Can you get at the bases he's running these high level raids out of? If you don't have an interceptor that'll get that high you could at least take a crack at destroying them on the ground and/or shutting their bases, couldn't you?
RE: Sit Rep May '42
Yakface, I like that rule, because it seems mighty unfair that these high level bombers can do such damage with no real response from me. I cannot reach them, I cannot pull out my fighters fearing that the LB will come in lower and mess me up really bad. Nemo and I are now playing without many HR's and although I am going to lose big time, this is acceptable to me as a rationale why HR's must be employed ... I hope any readers of this will see the real dangers of taking WITP at face value, without precautions. Maybe this is suicide, but I am learning a lot and enjoying the experience (mostly)
Pat:
I have 350 Betty's on map, not concentrated... About 130 available for bombing raids into Burma. Now the Betty has a bomb load of 1764 and a top alt of 26112. Compare this the the B-17D/E which has a 10 K bomb load and 32400 Alt limit. If I go long and try to bomb, then I will take losses to the large number of cap stationed, he can reach up and touch me, I cannot touch him until 1/43 when I get the Oscar II.
Now some of this is my own fault as I wasted a lot of my LB with useless attacks on shipping, while I should have been using it to shut down Ye/other airfields much earlier. A harsh lesson learned and not something I am particularly proud of. I think the gate is now well and truly open, shutting that gate is at this point going to be very tough, especially as Nemo starts moving LB into China to hit the Home Bases.
I feel like I will be hitting an elephant with a feather ... And it is very hard for the Japanese to close an airfield, let alone multiple 4+ airfields he could station at. Having stated this I am going into Mandalay this turn, he doesn't have Large LB here, but an assortment of PE-2's and other short range LB. I need to hit these now as I'm going to need to destroy some before he takes Rangoon. And at least this will make sure that he will have to guard against this in the future.
The Angel is now coming off the production lines, the cost to produce these are very high (216 HI/plane and engines). I am producing one a day, and hope that by the end of the month these monsters might do some real damage to anything stationed close enough to attack Singapore.
Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement... I may complain at the calamity, some, if not a lot of which, is of my own making. But bare with me, I'm not done yet and Nemo is as good a player as any to get an ass-kicking from.

[edit] forgot to say as an afterthought, that attacking his B-17 bases might seem like a great idea, and I don't have to destroy many a month to start biting into these monsters, but I cannot sustain this now... Another error of judgement ...

Directional change ?
3-7 June '42
Sorry readers, it has been a hell of a week preparing my students for their Mid-Term exams next week and catching up on some marking..
Anyway, to tell the story quickly, I will just give my reflections of what has transpired...
A large TT picked up some troops at Port Blair on its way to Pe, with 2 Div I hoped to push this force into the sea. Port Blair was supposed to have been a quick attack and capture, but ended up being a Maelstrom as Nemo flew in Div's and was about to crush my small force there. Anyway, it was kinda fortunate that I didn;t decide to make a stand here, but rather picked up and went West as close behind was a large SC with at least one BB and a number of CA/CL's. As I rushed to Ye, I realised I was in too deep, pulled out just in the knick of time as the SCTF came in like a hungry shark... it is still circling in the harbour hex of Ye.
Mandalay was a success in terms of finding the base unprotected and I got some good hits, but to then telegraph my next punch was a bit foolhardy as my Betty's got a hammering at Calcutta. Nemo says I should use 600 + (see later when I finally show what a hole I'm in ... 600 ? I wish I had 500 on map)
I caught sight of a large AK/AP force off West Australia a day or two ago, I sent a message to Nemo about it ... he feigned acknowledgement, and I haven't seen it since... my patrols off Java have doubled.
I have sight of a CVTF and SCTF off Palmyra, these are the British coming, he is really taunting me here, move my Betty's take some punishment and see if you can hit me ... tomorrow we will see, I had hoped to have some Zekes there but it has taken 3 hops to get there. SO tomorrow the 50+ bombers go without escort, if they can get off the ground.
In China, the North has suddenly come to life, and unless my recon is faulty troops seem to be moving from the Soviet Union onto the rough tracks of Manchuria ... I've pulled a few troops back to make sure that the approaches are protected ... because honestly a unit with an AS of 1, could take a large number of bases in the N of Kwantang before I could even respond. And seeing as I don't think I can realistically take the Soviets now, I'm starting to pull back.
Out in the Pacific not much is happening, I guess he is waiting for the British or just tying up my ships/planes and troops so that he can attack in another direction. I had a thought as I was going to bed last night that he might be planning on going Nth to the Aleutians ... I have built them up now to good port/af strength, but this would be a trifle for the forces of the US. Anyway, I'm preparing my TF's and deciding on new directions shortly. THis stalemate cannot continue until he feels it is right, I should attack when he least expects ... OR for the Black Addar watchers (Adder goes forth) ...

Darling: Are you sure this is what you saw Blackadder?
Blackadder: Absolutely. I mean there may have been a few more armament
factories, and [looks sideways at George] not quite as
many elephants, but...
Melchett: Well, you know what this means...
Darling: If it's true sir, we'll have to cancel the push.
Melchett: Exactly....
George: Damn!
Blackadder: What a nuisance...
Melchett: ...Exactly what the enemy would expect us to do, and
therefore exactly what we shan't do!
Blackadder: Ah.
Melchett: Now, if we attack where the line is strongest, then Fritz
will think that our reconnaissance is a total shambles.
This will lull him into a sense of false security, and
then next week we can attack where the line is actually
badly defended. And win the greatest victory since the
Winchester flower-arranging team beat Harrow by twelve
sore bottoms to one!
RE: Directional change ?
On both the 7th and 8th, I mounted large raids of Ye, this was to close the airfield and hopefully allow 2 Div to offload there, while making the large SCTF there vulnerable. It was a failure but shows the importance of combining as much air power as possible to hit the Allies. I'm sure this did little to dint the combined Allied air wing but let me show what I have and where I am proposing to go.
First on the 7th :-
Total losses:- 70 V 103
And then the 8th:-
Both attacks pose losses that are totally unacceptable to me, for the following reasons...
1. Production - I build total 17 fighters a day.
2. Pilots - Naval pilot pools are around 200, Army 0
3. War of attrition I cannot win.
Some background first about Production, in this mod you start around 12K HI, this necessitates a very gradual and cautious approach to building and using supplies. In the initial stages of the war I decided to build up my HI, and wait until I had enough to start building 2nd and 3rd generation planes. This meant that I concentrated on Betty's (naval) rather than Lilly's/Sally's/Helens. I changed over quite a few grps to Betty's and all my Army fighters became Zekes.
Chicken Licken time occurred, which resulted in the loss of 2700 planes against the loss of 2000 Allied planes, 250 Naval and more than 150 Army aviators (plus more that I haven't brought back up to strength - I conservatively estimate about 200 more Army aviators are needed)...
At the start of this turn I needed about 350 Zekes and 250+ Betty's to fill my groups. Having converted my Army fighters back to Nates (which are not that bad on paper) & Betty's back to Lilly I's and Mary's --- I now have a shortfall of 204 Zeke, 138 Betty, 70 Mike, 65 Sally reinforcements. Look at full production schedule for full details.
So at current production levels I'm looking at being at least a month down in Betty production, half a month for Zeke and Mike's. All this bodes not too well for my defensive perimeter...
which I will continue in my next post...

RE: Directional change ?
So ... dispersement of forces ...
In the DEI - 3 CVE's, 3 CVL's and 1 CV(Junyo), 2 BB's, 4 CA's and 8 CL's plus DD's. 80-100 Betty's & 150+ assorted smaller bombers.
From the Aluetians, South West to Marcus I'm going to send the rest of the fleet and any LB nearby ... that's right, I'm betting the farm that he is attacking in this general direction ... why ? Because going South is not his style, he will go for the jugular in the Aleutians (so he can bomb the HomeIslands) or for the Marianas. So either this has been the biggest fake out by Nemo to hit Wake and then surround Marcus with SS's and then leak to me that he was thinking about going to the Aleutians and coming up the soft underbelly of PNG, Fiji, Noumea etc OR I'm misreading his quite complicated mind.
I would guess that he plans to do this at or around a synch attack against Java / Borneo & probably a side attack in the soft underbelly. I'm willing to lose New Caledonia, concede that I cannot hold the Aleutians, but am totally committed to defending the Marianas and Java.

Soerabaja Captured, Soviet threat!
12 June '42
A little ray of sunshine on what is a gloomy June 42 day. Nemo's plan comes to light in his email and sightings from troops along the Manchurian / Soviet border.
Soerabaja is finally taken and Java is totally liberated from the Colonial powers. Now the quick redeployment of my forces along the cigar shaped Island while I wait for the Aussies to attack...
I had expected this move some time ago, (well since my troops were locked at Ondorhaan)but really thought he would go South to Linhsi, so had moved some Armour Bgdes south. 2 of those will move back toward Arsnaan and the other will continue onto Linshi. From Tsitsihar to Arsnaan will move a CavInf Div, plus some other misc units to provide bulk.
The first attack on the outskirts of Borzya was a failure for the Allies, I have been sitting here for about a month and have not only parity in numbers, but as you can see favourable results on the ground.
And fortunately, I think Nemo is forgetting I have some amazing units about to appear ... one is earmarked for Manchuria, one for Burma...

Now for some WITP engine gripes:-
1. I've said it before and I'll say it again ... HI and strategic bombing are totally overrated.
Firstly opening the Strategic bombing option almost gives 100% intel on the current situation at a particular base.
Secondly, I know that large HI factories would be easy to target and render useless, but to totally close down all production in one day as occurred below, 14 hits resulted in 64 HI of 65 being damaged. That is 65000 Supplies to repair, where is the mathmatical logic in that. Now I heard that, it is harder to damage HI that has half of it damaged ... someone said in a gamey way that it was good to double the HI, but not repair it, I don't want to have to do this to make WITP more palatable to my senses.
Maybe there should be two types of repairs, one for damaged by strikes (which would take quicker to fix) and one for building new capacity ...
Sure Res Cntrs give supplies, but this it still my major gripe!
2. I'm sick of paying PP's in protected regions to airlift / ship troops. This whole process should be allowed within the same region, I'm sure the airlift can be filtered and locked, as can the naval ... any thoughts ?

RE: Soerabaja Captured, Soviet threat!
13 May '42
Spot the numerous, numerous that is not a good adjective, swarm of Allied TF's piled one one on top of each other NW of Midway. Nemo tells me he is heading back for replenishment at Midway, hell there are more ships than I have in the entire fleet. 25 DD's, 22 MSW's, 2 CV's, 12 AVD's, and other escorts plus AK's and AP's.
SS-166 scored some hits on some AK's but eventually succumbed to the onslaught. Seeing as this one of my few remaining air patrol capable SS's it is a blow. How could these guys not see this mammoth armada?
14 May
Fleet indeed goes back to Midway where is encounters my mine field, still with so many MSW's nothing it touched, but at least I know where it is.
Koepang [Timor] greets me with many fighters although I've been trying to keep it closed for days. 26 planes on both sides are destroyed in aerial and ground attacks. Kendari also gets a visit from some B-25D Mitchell's.
15 May
Large number of AP and AK's enter a minefield at Rangoon, a disturbing trend, cause I know the next move will be to load some troops and head toward Sumatra or the Malayan peninsula. The Mitchell's come back to Kendari but are met by a sledgehammer, 17 are destroyed. At Koepang 35 Allied planes are destroyed, the airfield closed with the loss of 12 planes. Nemo has really drilled into me the need for overwhelming force.
16 May
Russian troops enter Hailar, bugger, but they hold under the Lvl 5 base, my trapped troops 2 hexes Nth cannot be resupplied as they are in the Soviet no fly zone. I have not told Nemo this as is will cause him to hit the shock attack button repeatedly...
The Imperial shock Div and the Hiroto Tank Div, which came in almost at strength due to my careful management are 2 days from Vladivostok ... they will take about 20 Days to make a difference, I hope that I have enough time. Troops are also taken from my other attacking force, and on their way toward Hailar.
Engineers have restored Skovorodino back to Lvl 8, now if I had LB damaging that base, this would have been impossible, now I will never take the base.

Ground combat at Hailar [Manchukuo]
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 2250 troops, 10 guns, 134 vehicles, Assault Value = 124
Defending force 11573 troops, 106 guns, 71 vehicles, Assault Value = 93
Allied max assault: 92 - adjusted assault: 6

197 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

RE: Soerabaja Captured, Soviet threat!
17 and the 18 were fairly uneventful but somewhat surprising ... In the North, all of the troops protecting my retreat path moved into Hailar, and one Div which I was moving back toward Hailar, but I thought would have to go the long way jumped into the hex ... now that is a bonus I never thought I'd get. Nemo has 4 units NW of this, and I expect they will try to cut me off sometime, but by then the evac will be complete and maybe I can bag the armour units in Hailar ...
I am frantically moving troops toward Ban Don, where I think I can make a stand... my problems amount to the fact that since the disintegration of my forces Nth of Moulmein, I've not much to throw at the problem, but Java and the Philippines and a large Tank force being shipped from Japan will have to do it.
Nemo continues to bomb the hell outta Tavoy and all Burma is ablaze. The LR cap trap tomorrow I hope will make his life interesting. And the SCTF and ACTF hovering near Sumatra protect Tavoy and Victoria Point. I'm just hoping that he is running short of AP/AK's after I sank a flotilla of them from the initial attacks. He has a SCTF with 2 BB's, I'm moving one BB back from Japan so that I can have an advantage.
Out in the CPac, Nemo continues to mystify me with sitting in the ocean miles from Midway... I need 3 days to position my forces ... well the whole fleet really.
... more later.

Shoot'em up ...
19/20 June '42
Nemo sends a bombardment TF to Tavoy, I spot numerous AK/AP's at Rangoon again. I try to sneak my BBTF closer under the cover of indicated thunderstorms. On the 20th they are spotted close to Tavoy and I make the decision to stand them down, rather than try to hit Nemo at Ye and Rangoon.
My CV's have set sail toward Midway, fearing that Nemo was going to pounce I set them to have their search aircraft patrol. (Nemo sent me an email about this thinking I was making simple mistakes)... Now usually I wouldn't want to give away the position, but given the imminent danger and the fact that Burma looked like it was going to explode,(simultaneous invasions are on the cards ... so seeing the situation in Burma ... I assumed the worst in the North) I played the "I'm coming ... " card. This is the last thing he can fear from me and I wanted to disrupt his plans. I also need a few more days to a week to set some defence along the Malayan Peninsula.
Nemo bombed Rangoon, I had all my fighters on LRCAP over my 2 SCTF's, so nothing was hit ... I wonder, is this a way to stop LB hitting planes on the ground ?
21 June - not much happened, but I set my 200 Zero's and 30 Tojo's to sweep, with 100 ME109's as local cap and brought in my remaining LB to Saigon. They will hit Ye after the fighter sweep, but unfortunately I don't have any fighters to escort them so I expected some losses. I was hoping the sweep would do the job ...
22 June -
248 Japanese V 272 Allied planes lost for the day.
So overall the sweep was not really effective in minimising my losses to LB. I just will have to find enough planes and pilots to ensure that both are protected in future...although where I will find those planes and pilots is a mute point. In hindsight I should have really targeted the ships, the loss of another British BB or two and some AK/AP's would probably hurt him a whole lot more than fighters. I now have 3 BB's, 3CA's, 3CL's and 20 DD's near Burma, so when he makes a move, I'll try to hit him hard.
In the CPac, Nemo's forces are sighted really close to the Aleutian's ... he can take any of those Islands in a turn or two. I have 100 fighters and about 100 LB, with my CV's 2-3 turns away. The problem is that the Islands are now sadly lacking good supply and fuel levels... I hope that they will fly.

RE: Shoot'em up ...
It looks like pilot attrition is killing you. It's not the loss of planes, but the loss of pilots that Nemo wants to happen. He can use those bypassed LCUs of yours in Burma to train up some of his pilots. It looks like he is spreading the wealth here by having you face pilots from at least 4 different countries while your Army and soon to be Navy pilot pools will be down to nothing too soon. Then, you will have no reserves and he can spring attacks on you where you don't want him to hit you.
You should have a lot of Nates flying AF attacks at max altitude over bases in China to train them up and/or over Manila.
With your recent influx on major reinforcements, you should know that he is aware of it. He is an M.D. and the designer of this mod. This gives him another leg up on you and what you may do.

Thanks Michael,
I think you are correct, although I have doubts being an MD has anything to do with him kicking my ass ... He does know the mod well and hitting a hammer with a hammer never gives brilliant results.
I am training as I go, although I just estimated, with some added calculations from Tracker that I'm down 600 pilots combined and 800 planes to fill out my air groups. Both Nemo and I agree that the war for the next year may well be decided in the CPac ...
Hence ... a preview ... please keep quiet everyone...
Also, Nemo moved some DD's toward Sumatra, he told me the invasions are under way ... ready or not here he comes !

RE: Shoot'em up ...
I mentioned him being a MD in reference to his memory capabilities. They have to memorize a lot of info and this helps him when it comes to the mod in play. I would have to agree to some extent about the CP being a decisive theater for the near future. The game always comes down to defeating or being defeated by the Americans. How many carriers are lost in the days to come will effect a lot of the months ahead. Good luck!!

It's not so much that he's an MD, it's what kind of MD. IIRC he's a psychologist or psychiatrist. Whatever, he can play a "head game" like no other AAR writer I've yet read on these forums.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

cunning as a fox ...
Nemo quoted me back some Black Addar the other day 'as cunning as a fox appointed professor of cunning at Oxford University' ...seem pertinent about now (sorry to all you Americans who have not been initiated)

A deflating day, Nemo moves one step closer to Kodiak, my carrier planes attack the wrong targets but remain intact.
As it happened:
[*] 2 Bombardment TF hit Cold Bay, destroying 18 Vals, 8 Rufe's, 3 Jakes and Kates apiece.
[*] The Allies hit Rahaeng in Burma with the mother load, but find only search planes.
[*] I hit BB Ramilles with a 250kg bomb at Ye, which probably bounced right off the hood.
[*] Carved up over a TF near Cold Bay, 22 Zero's, 8 Nells, 10 Betty's and 3 Sally's are toast when they encounter 71 Wildcats (loss 4), which I believe are flying LRCAP from the CV to the NE
[*] My carrier planes take off against 2 MSW, they are sunk.
[*] Second wave of Zero's and Betty's attack
[*]More waves of Betty's but mostly in disorganised groups, are downed on bombing runs ... the dice gods were very unkind .
[*]My Carrier planes once again target a small TF and destroy 2 MSW's, an AVD and PC.
[*]The Allies try to shock attack Hailar, but with a Lvl5 fort they find a 1-1 but nothing more.
So what happens tomorrow ? ...

Don't forget that his Avengers have a torpedo carrying range of 6 and his B-26's can go out to 8 hexes with torpedoes and the F4F-4s have an extended range of 8 hexes. Thus, getting too close to Kodiak may be hazardous to your health. [:D][:D]
