RE: MRAO Test 12A vs Scot: Force Z Draws First Blood

Post by el cid again »

16 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 17 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with Dutch DMS Kortenaer detecting mines at Balikpapan - twice.

Then Force Z engaged in an unexpected night action. [Scot says it was bound for Legaspi - but its 12 hour leg was in the same hex as the 12 hour leg of the Japanese transport force bound for Cebu - and they met - to the surprise of both sides] The Action Off Dipilog involved a Japanese transport TF laden with a brigade of troops fresh from the conquest of Davao. It had been almost stripped of escorts so the light carrier force could stand up to a capital ship formation. Two destroyers (Yukikaze and Nowaiki) were supplimented by 7 small minelayers - and CS Mizuho. 13 small APs and 1 medium sized AK made up the balance of the force. These faced BB POW, BC Repulse, CA Houston, CA Execter, CL Java, De Duyter, Danae, Marblehead and Boise. Also there were 7 USn DD. The battle lasted a long time. IJN scored 5 hits on 4 ships - only RN CA Exeter set on fire. Both IJN DD were sunk, DM Ikitsushima and DM Ishizake were so badly damaged they had to be scuttled. AP Shinkoku Maru was also sunk - by 17 shell hits. 139 Japanese casualties and 9 guns lost to troop cargo. In addition, AP Daitei Maru took one shell hit and was set on fire. 4 Allied torpedoes hit 2 IJN DD, 55 shells hit 7 ships of which 3 sunk outright, 2 had heavy damage and 2 set on fire. IJN scored 5 shell hits on 4 ships - only RN CA Exeter set on fire.

3 Allied ASW units missed Ro-61 at Palembang.

IJN troops began landings at Vigan, Luzon. 145 casualties.

Post by el cid again »

The day turn began with a JAAF strike causing 3 resource hits at Pucheng China.

15 B-17s escorted by 6 P-40s out of Clark attacked the airfields at Legaspi. 9 Zeros on CAP. 1 P-40 shot down. 4 airbase related hits.

3 Blenheims and 3 Whirraways escorted by 13 Buffalos failed to harm the 5th Motorized A Division in Central Malaa. 1 bomber shot down.
Note my offensive combined arms land task forces have an AAA unit attached.
1 Hudson failed to damage the 25th Amphib Army HQ unit in the same land TF hex. 7 Buffalos escorted.

10 Ki-32s caused 29 casualties to the Penang Fortress unit.

3 Dutch T-IVa out of Tarakan failed to harm CL Nagara at the NW tip of Borneo. 4 Buffalos were escorting them.
In the afternoon air turn they repeated this negative performance - also with 4 Buffalo escorts.

3 Ansons missed CL Kashima at Kavieng. 3 Petes on CAP helped AAA destroy 1 and damage another.

12 Nells out of Legaspi attacked Force Z at Cebu. These missed both RN capital ships but put a 250 kg bomb into USN DD Barker. 3 Zeros escorted. 6 P-40s were on CAP. 2 Nells destroyed and 6 damaged.

26 Ki-21s out of Brunei attacked the retiring Tromp TF in the Celebes Sea (headed for the narrows between Celebes and Borneo). They missed 2 DD and put 1 fifty kg bomb into RN DD Electra, setting her on fire.
Later 3 more flew in on the same TF and missed CL Tromp - apparently significantly damaged by the 250 kg bomb hit she took yesterday.
In the afternoon 21 more with 3 Zero escorts attacked 4 DD in the same TF - scoring only 1 fifty kg bomb hit on DD Vampire.
3 stragglers missed Dutch DMS Piet Hein.

The light carrier TF - which is near the narrows between Borneo and Celebes - attacked Balikpapan instead of the Tromp TF - as intended. Further - the Kates carried 60 kg bombs instead of torpedoes or 250 kg bombs (or even 800 kg bombs vs ships in port). 1 hit each on TK Meurila and TK Alfred Clegg. Dutch DM Bankert and also TK Gertrude Kellog were missed altogether. 1 Kate damaged. No CAP, but 3 Zeros flew escort.
In the afternoon 13 Kates, escorted by 4 Claudes and 3 Zeros, put one bomb each into TK Hermes and TK Longwood also at Balikpapan. At times I hate the AI - as when a force sent to get Tromp ignores it entirely in spite of a clear shot at 2 hex range.

Two USN PT units and one Philippine Army PT unit - ammo depleted from fighting yesterday - ran in on the transports at Vigan anyway - forcing the TF to suspend landings and run to seaward (but not before all the troops got ashore). 2 hits on PT-39/40/41 unit and Philippine Q 111/112/113 unit.

CL Natori ran into Cebu to meet up with the invasion TF. Instead it met - and was surprised by - the Force Z TF at 18,000 yards. DD Harukaze took 4 hits (heavy damage) and DD Hatakaze took 2 hits (on fire). CL Natori and DD Hato were missed entirely. The small force wisely disengaged.

3 USN DD and Dutch DMS Kortenaer detected, attacked and missed Ro-61 at Palembang.

36 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Allies at HK. No odds. Fort Level 3. 142 Japanese casualties, 25 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 172 Allied casualties, 7 guns lost, 3 vehicles lost. Casualties indicate the position is weakening.

21 000 Japanese attacked 27 000 Allies at Georgetown. 2:1 odds. Position captured. Both the static defense unit and the supply sink surrendered on the first assault. 23 Japanese casualties and 7 guns lost. 20,326 Allied casualties, 7 guns lost and 1129 vehicles lost. Once again we see different Allied personnell counts in the same action.

Undefended Magwe Burma fell to airborne assault.

RE: MRAO Test 12A vs Scot: Force Z Runs For Home

Post by el cid again »

Scot was not exactly happy with what Force Z found - but it expended many of its heavy rounds and some of its torpedoes - it has limited fuel - and it is deep in enemy territory - with enemy heavy forces a single 12 hour impulse away - so he called it a day. Recon shows it running for Balikpapan - and it made it half way in a single day. It managed to cross the path of the retiring light carrier force without encountering it. Tromp and her consorts ran for Manado - afraid of running into the carrier/cruiser force in their primary retreat route to Balikpapan - and it only moved 4 hexes - there is either a damage or a fuel problem. On the other hand - we have no large, well supplied, nearby bases nor any carriers with air groups fit to fight nor any surface action groups with fuel in position to intercept. We are moving every long range bomber with good morale to try to slow someone down - and continue to move submarines toward intercept positions - while one small group (detached from the light carrier force) with adequate fuel, speed and position will try to get in torpedo range for night combat.

Scot's move is textbook: go in - with surprise - hit whatever you can - and get out before they can react. The extent to which he can do this remains to be seen - but he has bagged two destroyers and an AP - damaged a seaplane carrier and a DMS - and killed a few embarked troops. So far he has taken minor damge on a few destroyers and CA Execter - and today he took a single 50 kg bomb hit on Prince of Wales - which should not matter much. Subs are not in position to engage - so unless the too small SAG achieves a night interception - it is all up to the long range bombers (with too small a base or logistic foundation) tomorrow. We can probably kill whatever we can damage badly.

17 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 18 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with PC Bellatrix detecting mines at Muntok. Then a 4 ship ASW unit (which was at Palembang yesterday) detected and cleared some mines at the same location.

4 IJN ASW units (2 DD, 1 DE, 1 MSW) missed S-36 near Luzon's North Coast.
Later they tried again and succeeed in getting 1 hit.
6 different ASW units (2 DD. 4 PC) missed Sculpin near Kyushu.
9 IJN DD missed S-40 East of Luzon.
Later they had more success further South - scoring twice on S-39 NE of Legaspi.

8 USN DD missed I-9 NE of Oahu.
On the day turn they tried again and scored one hit.

The IJN transport group near Mindinao offloaded its brigade at Dumaguet City - so it would not be sunk with them on board. It reloaded today and will proceed to Cebu. Cobatao is not a good idea because we laid mines there - and we would hit them if we land there.

The day turn began with a single Hudson failing to harm 5th Amphib Army HQ in central Malaya. 11 Ki-43s on CAP. 6 Buffalos escorting. 2 shot down, 1 damaged.
Later 9 Blenheims and 3 Whiraways escorted by 13 Buffalos attacked 5th Motorized A Division in the same hex, but failed to harm it. 11 Ki-43s on CAP. 7 Buffalos and 4 attack aircraft destroyed. 2 Ki-43s damaged.

A JAAF on Pucheng caused 12 resource hits. This is the only supply source in the area and there are many Field Armies feeding off it.

12 Ki-21s scored 2 bomb hits on PG Moth and 2 port hits at HK.

26 Ki-30s escorted by 15 Ki-43s in company with 2 Ki-15 recon planes out of Singora caused 18 casualties and 15 airfield related hits at KL. 3 Buffalos on CAP - 1 damaged.

14 P-26s caused 14 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 16th Division at Lucena Luzon. 1 destroyed by HMG fire at 2000 feet.

18 Ki-48s out of Pisanaluke Thailand caused 43 casualties, 1 gun lost and 1 vehicle lost to the RAF 267th Forward Air Station at Moulmein.

3 B-17s missed BB Fuso at Legaspi - revealing to the enemy the heavy surface TF is forward. 6 Zeros on CAP destroyed one bomber and damaged another.
3 B-17s missed AP Shinwa Maru unloading at Dumaguet City.
6 B-17s put a bomb into light destroyer Tomozuru and missed DD Hatsukari one hex out of Legaspi.

11 Ki-21s out of Brunei escorted by 5 Zeros put a 50 kg bomb into BB Prince of Wales - and missed BC Repulse - NE of Borneo. 2 bombers destroyed and 7 damaged by intense AAA fire. The unit was demoralized and withdrew to Soc Trang.

Only 139 men remain in the Philippine Army 3/12th Battalion. It was attacked at Vigan by 4594 men detached from the 65th Brigade. 54:1 odds. The position was captured and the battalion retreated to San Fernando. 9 Japanese casualties, 17 Filipino casualties.

33 000 Japanese attacked 15 000 US and Filipino troops (incluing most of the Scouts) at Lucena East of Manila. 1:1 odds. 940 Japanese casualties, 28 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost. 101 Allied casualties, 8 guns lost.

Undefended Chiang Mai Thailand fell to ground assault.
Undefended Udan Thani Thailand fell to ground assault.

Undefended Meiktila Burma fell to airborne assault. 5 casualties.

RE: MRAO Test 12A vs Scot: The Flight of Force Z

Post by el cid again »

18 December 1941 (Hawaii) 19 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with I-156 missing 2 ML at the Southern Tip of Borneo. This is one of two subs running headlong at Force Z's escape path.

USN sub S-39 torpedoed and sank AK Kiso Maru East of Luzon An MSW escort counterattacked but missed.

A 5 ship ASW TF missed USN sub Sculpin West of Nagasaki.

A 4 ship ASW TF missed USN sub Triton East of Kwajalein.

Japanese troops landed at Aitape New Guinea - 10 casualties.

USN sub missed AK Atutasan Maru SW of Hamamatsu, Honshu. No less than 4 subs are South of Honshu and Shikoku - and one is West of Kyushu.

Dutch Sub missed CA Chokai and CA Maya NE of Borneo. 4 DD counterattacked and missed.

USN sub Skipjack missed DM Ukishima at Truk.

The day turn began with 3 Blenheims, 2 Whiraways, 1 Hudson and 11 Buffalos attacking 25th Amphib Army HQ in Malaya. 7 Ki-43s on CAP. 1 Ki-43, 5 Buffalos destroyed. Attack otherwise unsuccessful.

A JAAF air raid on Pucheng China caused 10 resource hits.

6 Ki-21s attacked HK - heavy gunboat CL Moth took 2 hits and is burning badly - and she didn't try to fight today.

16 RTAF Ki-48s raided Rangoon - escorted by 39 Ki-27s with 3 Ki-15 recon planes. 34 P-40As on CAP. 7 Ki-27, 3 Ki 48 destroyed - 2 more damaged. 1 P-40B destroyed, 1 damaged. These were AVG P-40Bs - and they did very well. I will hit them four ways tomorrow - bringing in Ki-43s and Zeros to back up the (not demoralized) Ki-27s - and vastly more Ki-48s to try to get some on the ground. I will coordinate strikes from Raeing and Pisanoluke - if possible - otherwise Raeing will come in first - causing fatigue - before the main force arrives. Either way - it is usually possible to get rid of the AVG as an effective unit in a day or two. It is the best fighter force the Allies have in 1941 - and I would not waste it on Rangoon - at least not one with no bombers striking back.

13 Philippine Air Force P-26s failed to harm the 16th Division at Manila - as usual. 1 was damaged in the effort.

A JAAF strike on the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment in North China caused 91 casualties and 2 guns lost.
Another on the Hopei 49th Field Army caused 66 casualties and 4 guns lost.

19 Ki-32s out of Singora caused 29 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Indian Army 8th Brigade (reinforced by 21st Battery Mountain Artillery) in central Malaya.

3 B-17s out of Clark missed BB Hyuga at Cebu. This force - shelling Cebu in advance of a landing attempt - will move on to shell Lucena - which stopped a ground assault today. The bombardment of Cebu at the end of the day caused 145 casualties and 22 other hits.
3 more missed an AP at Legaspi. 6 Zeros of CAP failed to harm the bombers.

4 Vildebeeste - also flying out of Luzon - put a bomb into DM Yaeyama with the invasion TF one hex West of Dipilog (Mindinao). Another DM was scuttled being unable to reach Legaspi after the battle two nights ago.
Later 3 more missed an AK in the same force.

Landings at Wewak New Guinea caused 39 Japanese casualties.

40 000 Japanese attacked 7125 Allies in central Malaya. 35:1 odds indicate a very demoralized position. 150 Japanese casualties and 5 guns lost. 716 Allied casualties, 33 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. Defeated enemy units retreated.

For some reason only one partial tank regiment attacked at Lucena Luzon - it was demoralized and is withdrawing (to move to North Luzon to join the rest of itself). 3434 Japanese troops attacked 15 000 Allies. 0:1 odds. 104 Japanese casualties, 4 vehicles lost. 82 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. The loss ratio indicates poor Allied performance vs such a minor attack.

Undefended Bhamo (Burma) fell to airborne assault.

Undefended Shortlands fell to airborne assault - the first IJN airborne assault of the war (if assault applies to no enemy present - this was typical of IRL IJN paras in the Eastern NEI in 1942).

Force Z made it to Balikpapan - where it enjoyed fighter cover. We will try a long range port strike from two points tomorrow - if anything went into port. We will run a sub into port - if any TF remains at sea. And another sub is one impulse move away - to catch it on the night turn if it runs by the most efficient route for Soerabaja. Otherwise it escaped.

Tromp escaped detection altogether doing toward Amobina. The transports that seemed to be heading for the narrow of Borneo and Celebes went to Manado - missing Adm Tanaka's surface action group - and even they were not engaged by bombers - possibly due to also haveing fighter cover out of Manado.

Scot and I are testing a limited air search workaround - and it makes long range naval air strikes problematical. Scot did it by the book - get in- take what luck gives you - and get out - fast. Aside from single bomb hits on 3 DD and BB POW - he got away with it - unless we hit something tomorrow. But now we know where Force Z is hanging out - we will keep eyes out for it. But back to plan - take stuff.

19 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 20 Dec (Far East)

On this turn Force Z disappeared going South from Balikpapan - missing the subs laid in waiting for it. No ships went into port - so none were caught by bombers there. It likely is headed for Soerabaja - so we will see what we can do about that?

The night turn began with a sub attack by I-1 at PH - USS DD Gridley took a torpedo. She and 2 DMS git 3 hits on the sub in reply.
The same three ships then got 3 more hits on the sub - causing heavy damage.

The Main Body (the 4 old BBs) and escorts bombarded Lucena, Luzon. 193 Allied casualties, 6 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost.

Troops landed at Pakhoi South China - 77 casualties.
Pre dawn landings at the same place - 40 casualties.

Landings at Cebu were opposed by mines and 33 CD shots. DM Saishu took one gun hit. AP Gotake Maru took one mine hit. 232 casualties to troops from hits and landing operations.
This process essentially repeated in pre dawn landings. AP Ujigawa hit a mine. 16 CD shots missed CL Natori and DD Hato. 8 Allied casualties, 24 Japanese casualties to troops.

2 DDs attacked Dutch sub O-16 NE of Brunei. This was a strange encounter - we used a tricky maneuver to get to port late - and sweep for subs - and it seems to have worked - the sub is gone. But this is the only encounter - and it was not hit. Possibly it was under orders to leave the area?

An insulting incident by the tip of Indochina - a 5 unit IJN ASW TF had DE Tsuga torpedoed - hit - and sunk by Dutch sub KXVII. However the sub was hit in reply - and her tubes were wreaked. Not sure how come the enemy gets to know that???

I-18 dumbly attacked a 4 ship USN ASW TF at SF. It missed - and took 3 hits in reply. Dumb AI.

12 Ki-48s, escorted by 7 Ki-43s, hit Rangoon in company with 3 Ki-46 recon planes. 1 Port hit. 1 bomber damaged. Two ships in port vanished since yesterdays recon.

20 Nells out of Brunei made a low level run on Balikpapan covered by 6 Zeros. Just above MMG ceilings - they came in at 3000 feet. No ships in port. They could not carry heavy bombs either - Brunei is not yet a Level 4 airfield. 8 Dutch fighters of 2 types on CAP - 1 destroyed. No hits on targets on the ground. 1 Nell destroyed by fighters, 8 damaged by FLAK.

12 Filippine AF P-26s failed to harm the 48th Division at Manila - but one lost to AAA. Allied players seem not to notice this is a wasted effort.

7 Ki-21s from Canton caused 13 casualties at HK. 1 damaged.

16 Ki-30s caused 12 casualties to the Indian Army 15th Brigade in Malaya.

7 Bostons missed ML Hokoku Maru - lost and hanging out at Canton Island - because I set "do not retire."

12 B-17s out of Clark hit the TF at Cebu. 2 hits on AP Gotake Maru - to other APs missed.
2 B-17s, 18 Vildebeeste, 16 P-40s also out of Clark hit a TF inbound to Legaspi East of Luzon. 1 AK missed entirely. 4 torpedo hits on 3 AKs. Akashi Maru sunk, Oridono Maru heavy damage, Yamagiku Maru on fire.
In the after noon 11 B-17s and 12 Vildebeeste covered by 15 P-40s hit Legaspi. 11 Zeros on CAP. 1 P-40 and 3 bombers destroyed, 5 bombers damaged. BB Hyuga took a bomb hit. BB Fuso took a torpedo hit.

6 B-10s missed a 2 DD ASW TF at Brunei.

3 B-17s missed CA Chokai in the Celebes Sea. 2 damaged.

3 B-17s missed an AP at Legaspi. 1 Zero damaged - but it shot down a B-17. Another B-17 damaged by flak.
3 B-17s and 6 T-IVa missed 2 DD at Legaspi. No damaged aircraft.

The 7 DD ASW TF near Oahu attacked I-1 again - and got another hit.
This was repeated immediately thereafter - including yet another hit. She MIGHT survive - if she is not attacked again en route home.

42 000 IJA troops attacked 14 000 Allies at HK. 1:1 Odds - Fort Level 3.
Fortifications reduced to 2.
506 Japanese casualties, 24 guns lost. 259 Allied casualties, 10 guns lost. Only one unit demoralized in the attacking force - but we will replace it before attacking again in two days.

32 000 IJA troops attacked 20 000 Allies at Lucena Luzon - which troops had been hit by battleship and air bombardment. 1:1 odds - Fort Level 0 - 507 Japanese casualties, 16 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost. 354 Allied casualties, 16 guns lost. We have reinforcements moving in - and will reingage in 2-3 days with a stronger force.

35 000 IJA troops attacked 15 000 Allies at Taiping - a first assault vs a position with a supply sink. The position fell. 18 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost. 8751 Allied casualties, 6 guns lost, 815 vehicles lost, and the defeated non static units retreated. We see FOUR units INLAND in Malaya - which could jump on LOC if we pass them - so how to proceed is a question? We will guard the LOC I guess.

Undefended Wewak New Guinea fell to a naval landing force.
Undefended Aitape New Guinea fell to a naval landing force.

Allied ground bombardment at Cebu was ineffective.

5200 Japanese in a slightly reinforced RCT captured Moulmein from a weak brigade of 2400 Allies. 5:1 odds, Fort Level 1. 39 Japanese casualties, 28 Allied casualties - and the enemy retreated up the RR LOC.

20 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 21 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with what has become a feature of RHS games I am playing - an ASW TF (2 DD, 4 PC) attacked - and hit - USN sub Sculpin - one hex West of Nagasaki.

Another IJN TF - a transport group inbound to Davao - was attacked by USN Sub Sturgeon one hex SE of there - but both Sculpin and the two PCs involved all missed.

Landings at Pakhoi South China involved 13 CD shots (by what???) - all of which missed - and 12 casualties landing on the beach itself.

USN sub Triton actually attacked an ASW group (2 DD, 2 PC) at Kwajalein - dumb but typical of AI. They counterattacked. Everybody missed.

Dutch sub KXVII did better one hex out of Saigon - shelling, torpedoing and sinking AK Meiyo Maru - 2 shell hits, 2 torpedo hits.

USN sub Sargo attacked and missed some unidentified target one hex out of Truk. She appeared at Truk during the day.

The day turn began with a fouled up attack on Rangoon. Weather prevented a preliminary sweep out of Raeing - but the main raid from Pisanalouke went in anyway. 8 Ki-48s - 24 Ki-43s - 2 Ki-46 recon planes. 37 AVG P-40s on CAP. 5 Ki-43s and 2 Ki-48s lost - the rest of the bombers bugged out. 1 P-40 lost, 2 more damaged.
30 Ki-27s did their sweep too late - in the afternoon. They did fight an equal number of AVG P-40s to a standstill - 1 loss on both sides. The P-40s may be tired.

30 Ki-51s escorted by 21 Ki-43s attacked KL. 21 Allied fighters of 2 types on CAP. 1 Ki-43 and 2 Ki-51s lost, 3 Ki-51s damaged. 7 Allied aircraft destroyed in the air or on the ground, 1 more damaged. 38 ground casualties, 2 guns lost. 4 airbase related hits.

14 P-26s failed to harm the IJA 16th Division at Lucena, Luzon (SE of Manila).
6 B-17s did better - causing 13 casualties.
15 Bettys from Legaspi (with minimal bomb loads) failed to harm the Philippine 81st Division in the same location.

In North China - a JAAF raid caused 35 casualties to the Red 47th Guerilla Regiment.
Another caused 20 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment.
In South China 6 Ki-21s out of Hanoi failed to harm the Misc Southern Factions 6th Division at Pakhoi.

3 Dutch B-10s failed to harm CA Ashigara and CA Haguro in the Celebes Sea. Rear Adm Tanaka has managed to combine undamaged survivors of 3 different SAGs and refuel them - pending targets of opportunity.
3 more B-10s missed his oiler.
Later 3 more missed CA Kinugasa in the same hex. 1 was lost, 1 more damaged.
Later still 2 more got shot down - by 4 Petes and AA fire from CA Chokai.

4 Vildebeeste missed CL Natori at Legaspi. 6 Zeros managed to damage one. 5 P-40s failed to help them much.
Later 3 B-17Ds missed an AK at Legaspi. The Zeros could not engage them.

In the South Pacific 8 A-20s missed ML Hokoku Maru - she managed to lay her mines before the attack and is returning to Kwajalein.

3 Hudsons missed AV Sanuki Maru at Davao. 7 fighters of 2 types failed to help much. 1 bomber was damaged by AA fire.

3 Ansons out of Rabaul missed BB Nagato one hex away - escorting an invasion TF down the coast of New Ireland.

The ASW TF (4 ships) at Kwajalein attacked and missed USN sub Triton.

I-123 missed ML Krakatau at the narrows between Borneo and Celebes.

A reinforced brigade (engineers along for the ride) drove a Chinese Guerilla Regiment (harassed by air srikes) off a RR LOC in central China. 278 : 1 odds. 132 Chinese casualties and 1 gun lost.

Undefended San Fernando Luzon was captured by 2100 troops. In spite of this, ten times that many have marched into the hex.

A brigade of 4900 captured Cebu from a "division" of 4100 reinforced by an air support unit. 47 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. 30 Allied casualties.

An Allied bombardment attack at Pakhoi South China caused 9 IJA casualties.

Undefended Vientianne Laos fell to a brigade.

Undefended Chang Rai Thailand fell to a battalion fragment of 33rd Division.

21 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 22 Dec (Far East)

Note: Scot is waging an aggressive submarine campaign. He established and has maintained a patrol line South of the Home Islands - but he does not enter ports (for fear of mines I suppose) - and it has meant I am not using major ports very effectively. Massive air patrols supplimented by some ASW groups has started to take its toll - but many supplies are lost - and units doing these ops are not available for other missions. He also wages aggressive anti submarine warfare - so our game features a lot of sub and ASW actions - lots of evasion and moving into hexes where the enemy was detected - etc.

The night turn began with Lucena being bombarded by BB Yamashiro, BB Hyuga, BB Ise, CL Oi, CL Naka, and 8 DD. 163 casualties, 6 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. He sent a sub there - but it was only detected by air patrols today - so we won't be going back. We bombarded before - so that is why he sent the sub.

Next BB Nagato, BB Mutsu, CL Kitakami, and 6 DD bombarded Rabaul. 123 casualties, 2 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost, 40 other hits.
US sub Stingray was detected and missed by 5 DD. The 6th DD didn't have ASW I guess.
Then landings began by a separate TF - the Imperial Guards Brigade landed almost completely during this single day - only one ship had 120 men left to land by its end. They will conduct a shock attack tomorrow - supported by air bombardment and airborne assault from all three IJN airborne SNLFs. 2 hits by CD guns on DM Takashima. 372 casualties to beach defenses.

The famous DD Ward and DD Conyngham detected, attacked and missed I-7 at PH.

3 DD attacked and missed USN sub Thresher at Enewetok. We are going to abandon Enewetok as an assembly point - we were assembling for operations vs Midway there because Kwajalein was infested with subs. Now we will complete assembly at Wake. Most or all of the required units are in the area and only a small amount of sorting out is required to get the right units on the right ships. We will use a reinforced Nanyo Detachment (144th Regimental Combat Team) - plus a tank company and the survivors of an SNLF (half of which was lost returning from taking Johnston Island).

The day turn began with an "AVG Trap" at Hengchow Central China. Having discovered (unpleasantly) they were messing up ops in this area, we sent in a sweep of 8 Ki-27s and a Ki-46 recon plane. The AVG had 21 of its unique P-40Bs on CAP (we have special armament and art for this variant) - and it has a special hard code bonus too. 4 Ki-27s were destroyed - they managed to damage only 2 P-40s - and Scot must have been happy with that outcome. But so was I - because now the AVG was tired - fuel depleted - and should (if code ever reverts to its UV form it will be right) ammo depleted.
Immediately thereafter 45 Zeros flew in from Formosa. There were still 21 P-40s on CAP - 2 of them probably damaged - and they had a very rough time: 16 were shot down - vs only 1 Zero.

43 other Zeros out of Formosa swept Manila - but in spite of almost 2 dozen fighters there - none were on CAP.
Yet another 45 Zeros out of Formosa swept Clark - and met 19 P-40s of two types in the air. 8 were shot down vs 4 Zeros - not bad - but the P-40 is shown to be anything but useless even without the AVG bonus. We will try to re engage them tomorrow with the unit that swept Manila -
has morale of 99 - has 26 kills - and is not tired. We will let the group that is tired from today's combat do escort duty and a "unit" (part of a group) will fly top cover at higher altitude - LRCAP all day long - to mess up all sorts of air ops.
6 B-17s out of Clark - covered by 5 P-40s - caused 13 casualties to the 16th Division at Lucena - showing Clark is still very much operational.
We will give it attention for a few days.

10 Ki-51s caused 14 casualties to the ROC 20th Field Army in China.
9 Ki-21s caused 8 casualties to the Misc Northern Factions 6th Division in China.

24 Nells caused 6 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Indian Army 22nd Brigade (unusual in not having any artillery attached) in Malaya.

11 Ki-51s out of Aparri caused 6 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine Army 41st Division at Lucena.

3 B-17s out of Clark put a 500 pound bomb into AK Gyoun Maru NE of Legaspi.

USN old S boat S-36 (with good torpedoes) missed AK Nako Maru near Luzon.

A 7 unit ASW TF attacked and missed I-1 a day's sailing SW of PH - 3 DDs and 4 DMS were involved. She is badly damaged from attacks yesterday - so we will try to evade more such attacks by changing course.

BB Nagato, BB Mutsu, CL Kitikami and their 6 DDs bombarded Rabaul again - causing 71 casualties, 2 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost, and 44 more hits to other targets. Rabaul just might fall on the first assault tomorrow.

41 000 Japanese attacked 13 000 Allies at HK. 1:1 odds - Fort level was 2 but engineers reduced it to 1. 184 Japanese casualties, 10 guns lost. 100 Allied casualties, 7 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. The assault troops were not demoralized for the first time - so no delay to reassault. We got odds better than 0:1 for the first time. HK may fall in a day or two - slightly ahead of history.

38 000 Japanese attacked 20 000 Allies at Lucena. In spite of air and heavy BB bombardment, and no forts, no odds were achieved. 546 Japanese casualties, 16 guns lost, 3 vehicles lost. He knew I would come in from this direction from the previous game - and he does not want me in Manila - shutting down supply generation. He also has strong defenses to the North. 352 Alliec casualties, 16 guns lost, 6 vehicles lost.

The only Japanese Tank Brigade in the SRA - with an artillery unit of 36 mortars in support - attacked at Kuantan, Malaya. 5:1 odds - the non static units retreating. 5 Hudson IV bombers destroyed on the ground. 18 Japanese casualties. 5802 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 963 vehicles lost. This was the first attack on a position with a supply sink - an air support unit - and several brigades - over 15,000 Allies - attacked by only 9 000 Japanese - but they had tanks and air support.
In the hex to the West - in Central Malaya- a strongly reinforced 5th Motorized A Division attacked - 24 000 Japanese vs 17 000 Allies. No odds. 1198 Japanese casualties, 36 guns lost, 5 vehicles lost. 81 Allied casualties, 7 guns lost. We will send the tanks, mortars, and engineers to help with the next attack.

Allied ground bombardment at Rabaul caused 8 Japanese casualties.

23 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) Christmas Eve (Far East)

Ro-34 attempted to engage PT boats at Singapore - unsuccessfully.

4 IJN ASW units (2 DD, 2 PC) attacked and hit USN sub Triton near Kwajalein.
They reengaged later in the night - but failed to score.

Adm Tanaka led a large cruiser destroyer force bombarding Manado. 4 CD shots fire for one hit on DD Oboro. 146 casualties, 6 guns lost, 45 other hits.

A naval landing party landed at Medang NG - 41 casualties.

7 MSW units cleared mines at HK.

6 Allied ASW units detected, engaged and hit I-23 five times. This had just arrived and was immediately engaged - it is no longer safe to send subs to PH.

68 JAAF fighters of 2 types raided Rangoon - but there was no CAP to engage.

47 Zeros swept Clark. 8 P-40s of 2 types on CAP. 5 destroyed. 2 Zeros lost.

4 Whirraways caused 14 casualties to the 18th Division in Malaya.

A JAAF raid in Northern China caused 12 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment.
Another caused 26 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 9th Field Army.
Yet another caused 50 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.

The situation in Malaya is not great. 4 units lie in the jungle threatening to cut the LOC if passed. So we will recover for several days and build a single striking force instead of the usual two pronged one - seeking to take the major supply sources - isolate the enemy - and then reduce the pockets.

Allied ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Christmas Eve (Hawaii) Christmas Day (Far East) 1941

This was not a very good day for Japan - but painful progress is apparent on most fronts. It will take 2-3 days to realize most current immediate objectives - and weeks to secure Luzon, Malaya, Burma or the NW Approaches to Australia - while the NEI will not be taken until after that. In Burma and the NW approaches we are ahead of history - HK fell just a hair ahead of history - and Malaya and Luzon are probably behind history and certainly behind plan. This is a historical scenario and there is no way to take Oahu - so Scot will have the short SLOC to use. But at least we got the USS Enterprise and USS Lexington - for which we made a major effort - and we have got Johnston Island and will take Midway next - to more or less distract him and move his eyes away from our SLOC to Kwajalein. We have some time to get the essential tasks done.

The night turn began with USN sub Permit missing a DM at Legaspi - good as she was badly hurt already.

Near Osaka USN sub Swordfish did better - putting a torpedo into BB Fuso - retiring with bomb damage from the Visayas. She is in no danger - but will take a long time to repair now - instead of a short time. I missed that she was going to cross the patrol line and failed to evade.

A naval landing party came ashore at Saidor New Guinea - 36 casualties.

The day turn began with a sweep of Hengchow by 43 Zeros - but the AVG had enough and was not up to another fight.
A JAAF raid caused 1 resource hit at Pucheng.
Another caused 45 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment in North China.
Another caused 22 casualties to the ROC 9th Field Army in South China.

33 Ki-27s and Zeros swept Rangoon - but there was no CAP to oppose them.

12 Zeros swept KL - 6 Dutch Buffalos and 4 Hawks opposed them - 3 Buffalos and 1 Hawk shot down.

46 Zeros swept Clark. 3 P-40s on CAP were all shot down.

3 B-17s caused 11 casualties to the 65th Brigade in Northern Luzon (it is at Linguyan City).

4 Whiraways (escorted by 15 Buffalos) failed to harm an RCT of 18th Motorized Division in Malaya. 2 were shot down.

25 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 29 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Indian Army 12th Brigade in Malaya.
27 more caused 41 casualties to the Indian Army 45th Brigade in the same area. 1 Ki-30 lost.

9 Bettys from Kwajalein - after two days of failure - caused 27 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Lark Force Battalion at Rabaul.

6 P-26s caused no harm attacking troops at Lucena SE of Manila.

5900 Japanese troops FAILED to achieve odds at Rabaul - in spite of yesterday - and got demoralized. We won't attack again for 2 or 3 days. They need supplies. 141 Japanese casualties and 6 guns lost. 15 Allied casualties.
Allied ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Japanese ground bombardment in Central Malaya caused 14 Allied casualties.

Japanese ground bombardment at Lucena caused 23 Allied casualties.
Allied ground bombardment at Lucena caused 23 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost. Also 16 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost.

Christmas Day 1941 (Hawaii) 26 Dec (Far East)

An IJN group failed to detect a sub it was hunting South of Honshu - even though it was reported by aircraft and I sent it there.
The sub turned out to be USS Swordfish - it got the drop on a PC - fired - hit and failed to do harm. THEN the ASW group of 7 DDs and PC units attacked the sub - and also failed to do harm.

At the South tip of New Guinea Ro-68 ran into a Allied surface action group of CL Perth, DM Le Triomphant and DD voyager - and put 2 fish into Voyager - which should proove fatal since it is far from any port large enough to help her. Counterattacks failed to do harm.

20 Ki-48s with 66 escorts of 2 types raided KL. 5 Hawk 75s on CAP. 3 shot down. 1 Buffalo and 2 Blenheims destroyed on the ground.
55 casualties, 1 vehicle lost. 37 other hits.

A JAAF attack on the ROC 100th Field Army in Central China caused 27 casualties, 1 gun lost.
Another on the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment caused 8 casualties.
Another on the 9th ROC Field Army caused 6 casualties, 1 gun lost.
Yet another caused 51 casualties and 3 guns lost.

6 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 15 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Philippine 11th Division at Linguyan.
9 Ki-51s caused 13 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine 71st Division at the same location.
28 more bombers of 2 types then came in on the 60th Coast Arty AA Regiment causing 19 casualties and 1 gun lost.

USN sub Snapper missed 2 AKs at sea.

31 000 Japanese attacked 32 000 Chinese on the Rail LOC West of Shanghai. No odds. 747 Japanese casualties, 26 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 214 Chinese casualties, 8 guns lost.

7000 Japanese attacked 3500 Chinese at Pakhoi South China. 4:1 odds, Fort Level 3. Forts reduced to Level 2. 55 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 64 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.

51 000 Japanese (Armor, infantry, artillery) attacked at Lucena Luzon - 27 000 Allies - 1:1 odds (no forts) - 1266 Japanese casualties, 24 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 768 Allied casualties, 33 guns lost, 7 vehicles.

13 000 Japanese attacked 12 000 Allies at Linguyan, 205 casualties, 6 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost, 129 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 vehicles.

A naval landing party captured undefended Saidor, New Guinea.
Another captured Madang, New Guinea, nearby.

Allied ground bombardment at Lucena was ineffective.

Allied ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Japanese airborne assault on nominally undefended Schwebo failed because 588 troops were present - or marched in - apparently an understrength regiment or brigade. It must be very weak - no casualties.
