Installation error

Post by downtown »

On trying to reinstall COI because of issues, I get the following error:
"The following file is in use and cannot be updated C:\WINNT\system32
\oleaut32.dll. Close all applications and choose retry. Choose cancel to
install this file on reboot." I have to hit cancel to continue. Then I get
this error:
"The following file is in use and cannot be updated C:\WINNT\system32
\olepro32.dll. Close all applications and choose retry. Choose cancel to
install this file on reboot." I have to hit cancel to continue again.
As I reinstall the Java VM I get a Norton AntiVirus alert on
C:\WINNT\Java\classes\xmldso.cab. Norton deletes the file
then the install completes. Now the system wants me to reboot.
What do you guys make of all this? I will reboot and see how it plays

Firstly, I would disable Norton when installing - the first screen of the installer talks about that. Norton and some other AV software can really play havoc with installations.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but I'm actually having the same problem after reformatting my PC (fresh install of WinXP), and don't have any AV software at all.  I've even tried installing the game in safe mode and am getting the same error.  It's always installed just fine before, so this is strange, and if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it!

From the Q & A file

Q."The following file is in use and cannot be updated" and then mentions a number of files in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM such as oleant32.dll.

A. the install should continue if you click through.

So are you given the option to ignore or similar?

Sorry for reposting this in the other forum, I could have sworn I made this post on Monday, not the 24th!  Chalk it up to lack of sleep ;)  I can choose "retry", which gives me the error again, or "cancel" which continues the installation but then when I open the game, it just goes to a black screen.  I'm assuming this is being caused by the error, as I've installed the game several times before with no problem, but might be wrong!

Ok, sounds like a CODEC issue.

From the Q&A

Q.

When I first launch from the CoI Command Center I get the familiar red "Loading" screen, hear the music, and then a black screen. I can only exit by

hitting my Start button and closing the "unresponsive program".

A. try holding down ctrl when you launch.

then turn off videos

alternatively

download the intel codec from CSO Downloads in command centre

Command Centre\CSO Downloads\Utilities\ Intel Codec for CoI

then run that before launching. (only needs to be run once)

EDIT: You can now get the Codec here http://closecombat.matrixgames.com/CoI/coimods.html

The codec didn't seem to help, but turning off videos entirely did and without them the game runs fine, strange but it's fine with me!  Thanks for the help!
