Better than 6 AAV against 399 AAV -- but you're gonna need a bigger stick.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/19/42

My CVs etc are spotted and the enemy CVs have left Japan again. I doubt they had time to refuel and due to the fact that I don't think they have much pre-positioned fuel in Aleutians I am hopeful that by drawing the Japanese out into the deep ocean after my CVs I'll run down his fuel bunkers, add in a bit of system damage and, when I do make for the Aleutians, this will all combine to ake him BINGO for fuel much earlier than necessary ---- which should limit the amount of time he can sit around pounding my helpless merchants with his KB airgroups.

In the meantime this whole shell game in the Pacific has:
a) kept him from doing ANYTHING aggressive with his CVs ( which outmatch mine be at least 100% ) for over a month --- there's more to good play than winning actual fights.
b) kept him from covering invasions of NZ, Oz or anywhere else over the past month
c) concentrating his CVs and just butchering my forces off Burma/Malaysia.
d) allowed me to bring 1 USN CV, 2 more BBs, 3 CAs, 6 CLs and about 18 DDs into my TFs. The Royal Navy CV TF is about 4 days out now and will add another 2 CVs and 1 CVL to the mix. All in all the last couple of weeks of dancing will allow me to augment my fighter cover from 144 fighters to just over 200. That's well worth having.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Tavoy [Burma], at 28,37

Hey, hey look at me. Send Mr Betty in and see if you can't sink me. Obiously doing that will result in a massive CAP and LRCAP ambush over Ye -- which is covered by some 200 fighters at Ye and another 200 flying LRCAP from Rangoon.

I'm seeing enemy bombers at Ban Don and a big increase in plane numbers at Bangkok and Rahaeng. I think I wll be facing fighter sweeps to pave the way for torpedo strikes over the next day or two.

Sub attack near Umnak Island [AK] at 101,37

Interesting, I wonder if this force is bringing troops in or moving troops out of Umnak. Umnak is on my list of targets in the Aleutians so this question is not just of academic interest. I'm beginning to think of just landing in overwhelming force in 1 or 2 bases and conducting a slowish ( for me ) march across the Aleutians.

A tip: If you don't want to tip your opponent to your desire to recon a particular base then why not just station subs at those bases. If you can base subs at that base and its subsidiary/hub bases you can pretty quickly build up a good picture of whether or not he is building it up ( making it into a major base ) or is content to leave it a small base with few troops and few supplies. Sometimes you also get a good read on the number of units there... and all of that intel is gathered without having to do a single overflight and alerting the enemy to your interest as no-one seems to worry much what a sub at a base means since they only ever look at the obvious answer "He wants to sink my ships" and don't delve deeper.

Sent in at 6,000 feet in order to pave the way for ground attacks AND give Damian some rationale for continuing to base fighters on CAP over his bases. Why give your enemy hope? Simple, hope isn't synonymous with doing the right thing so giving him hope of ambushing my bombers means he might divert his fighters from smashing my groups in Burma - I'm down to no more than 200 first-line fighters and another 200 second-rate fighters. 2 days of ruthless sweeps could wipe out my entire air force in Burma beyond hope of salvage for the next month. -- which will play into my hands and prevent him using them appropriately in sweeps to break my back.

Its also why MOUT manuals always talk about leaving one avenue of escape seemingly open as it is much easier to shoot down men/insurgents running away from an attack than it is to go into that house and take them on room by room. Of course the easiest thing of all is to get some fancy Russian late-model RPGs with thermobaric warheads and simply incinerate everything inside the house but that's a discussion for another day.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/20/42

The slow crawl north-eastward toward Kodiak continues and the IJN CVs are following slavishly some 12 to 18 hexes away. How do I know this? Well he hasn't turned his Kate and Val searches off and by seeing which subs are spotted by Vals I can draw a circle on the map telling me his location to within 3 or 4 hexes. Its actually such a rookie mistake that I've emailed him telling him about it and suggesting he may want to ameliorate this oversight. It'd be no fun at all taking advantage of this rookie mistake by sprinting westward and launching a devastating raid from point-blank range.

Lots of fighters in Bangkok... Why aren't they hitting me? It can only be a matter of time. Tomorrow I'm holding most of my shipping in Ye and I'm going to put all my CAP and LRCAP over that base. With a little luck I should be able to bag a load of fighters and bombers, IF they come. I've laid this trap 3 times now with no result recently but the enemy buildup is just too large right now to be a mere feint. Damian's not like me, he doesn't feint with 80% of his force. He feints with small forces.

hmm, is this a major naval action I see before me. Well, my Avengers and Beauforts are available in strength and if he comes for me I think he's going to lose these BBs and CAs. So, let him come. I'm sure he'll destroy most of my fleet if he attacks now but he'll lost most of his fleet too and then he'll have to replenish this from his forces facing me at the Aleutians, weakening his force at a time and place when he'll need them most ( the weather in the Aleutians is really not favourable for CV raids and so a lot of battles there tend to be surface actions.

If he's smart he'll withdraw these surface forces and just use them to protect against me if I decide to "go deep" and land in mainland Malaysia somewhere.

Well, about three days have passed and as I slowly retreat toward Kodiak ( at a rate of 3 hexes per day in order to protect my slowest ships from Betty strikes ) the IJN CVs inexorably close. It is the 24th and tomorrow I expect the enemy to be in range. In order to protect my CVs I am running them a few more hexes east and will cover my transport only with LRCAP. Its unfortunate as in just 1 more day my entire force would have been under cover of my USAAF LRCAP and that would have made the cost of launching attacks too high for him to pay.

Ah well, 120 miles is going to cost me a couple of dozen ships badly damaged. C'est la guerre.

From the AAR on Damien's side I note impressive A6M2 casualties. At this rate, your CV's may not need to be protected much longer.[:D]

Harlock, aye A6M2 csualties are massive. When I took over some 400 had been lost ( mostly to OPs ). At this stage his losses are about 1975. So, that's 1600 Zeroes lost in the past 2 months. Not at all a bad showing considering that this is the period of time when Zeroes normally run riot oer weaker Allied planes. His Betty losses are also serious having risen from a bit over 100 to over 800.

He has a good pool of Mikes at Bangkok but I'm planning major Pe-2 and continuous B-17 raids to close Bangkok and once that's done I can exploit deeper from Tavoy ( which I expect to take tomorrow.... I landed 2 Bdes there today under LRCAP and covered by 2 BBs ).

In other news... He nibbled at my forces around the Aleutians yesterday and inflicted a little damage on 2 transports, a couple of patrol craft and 2 BBs ( both will have to dock for repairs and will be out of action for a month or two but its nothing serious ). Today he sank one of the damaged AKs and a couple of detached MSWs but, really, losses to my fleet amount to less than 1% of the fleet. My F4F numbers are critical with the F4F4 proving no match at all for the Japanese Zeroes and often being shot down at a 2:1 or worse exchange rate. Fortunately pilot experience is building and many of my squadrons now have an experienced core of 70+ Exp pilots who can meet the Zero on equal footing.

Fortunately I have numbers available to make up for the lack of experience. Rebuilding my F4F4 squadrons will take a few days by which time the British with their excellent Seafire fighters should be at Kodiak. They ought to help tremendously.

Overall Japanese losses are now 6300 to 5011 Allied losses. At restart the loss rates were about 2,200 vs 2600 so I've lost about 2,800 planes in return for 3,700 in the past two months. The most important thing is not the actual numbers ( although they are pretty horrific and the Allied fighter pools are at breaking point with many squadrons being short on planes right now ) but the fact that this loss rate far exceeds Damian's ability to replace pilots and planes. So, right now, any pilot kills in excess of 6 per day results in a loss of trained pilots to his squadrons. I think he might JUST be able to replace his recent KB losses by saving pilots and production for a couple of days ( as his Zero losses weren't excessive and he has lost few Kates and Vals over the past 2 months s his stocks of those should be pretty good ) but I think that should be the end of his logistics tether. After this battle he should only be able to make good further losses by waiting for new production and new trainees to come online.

So, what's my plan?
1. Take Tavoy.
2. Bring in two major convoys from Aden which will allow me to sealift several divisions at the one time and then consider making for Victoria Point.
3. Preceding any invasion of Victoria Point launch Fast Transport invasions along the Malaysian and Sumatra coasts.
4. Exploit through victoria Point while anchoring the Japanese in the Malaysian peninsula to contain those seaborne landings.

5. Push the Chinese into Thailand through the trails from Vietnam.I should be capturing Ubon Ratchatani tomorrow and with enough air transport I should be able to fly in enough troops to allow me to push toward Bangkok from the East at the same time as I push toward it from the north-west. I don't really care too much about advancing from Ubon Ratchatani though as it has the potential to be a Level 7 airfield ( which can be built to Level 9 obviously ). Currently it is only a Level 1 airfield BUT the A20B can reach Brunei ( 16 hexes ) from Ubon. Manilla and Clarke Field are only 15 hexes from Ubon and thus well within range of high-level B-17 strikes or low-level B-25 raids and many of the SLOCs to Japan from Java run within 11 hexes and thus within range of prowling Il-4s.

Overall from Ubon Ratchatani I have the ability to bomb the resources and training bases in the Phillipines back into nothingness, the ability to bomb OIL in northern Borneo back into nothingness and can begin extracting a significant toll from his Tanker convoys back to Java. Ubon Ratchatani is out of the way etc etc BUT its capture is an utter disaster for the Japanese. Now my recon might be wrong but I have an army in the hex beside it and have spotted no troops there so I'm hopeful it will be completely ungarrisoned. Even if it is garrisoned my troops ought to be able to handle a small construction Bn or somesuch.

6. Aleutians.... Well, I'm going to try to unload some 3,000 AV on each Japanese base in series. The plan isn't to be fast but to capture Cold Bay ASAP and then advance down the Aleutians chain under the cover of massive USAAF CAP. Once I take Cold Bay I can island-hop under cover of LRCAP the whole way down the Aleutians and there is no way he can afford to take my USAAF fighters on in such circumstances any more. I've made sure he no longer has the pockets to win such a battle.

7. Soviet Union. Somehow the Japanese were able to move from borzya into an Allied-controlled hex... something the rules say they shouldn't be able to do. So, it looks like the Allied army might escape. Still, I have other options for going around them so it isn't an utter disaster yet. I'm still hopeful of forcing them out of Hailar. If I don't then I'll just begin manoeuvring again and create a new opportunity. Mostly though this is just a sideshow and the real action is happening in Burma/Thailand now.

Just to be sure, you meant that the Japanese army might escape, right? That said, I believe you are entirely correct about the Soviet Union being a sideshow. If you can control Burma and Thailand then the Malaysian peninsula becomes very hard to hold -- and if THAT falls, Damian will have major shortages of oil in fairly quick time.

Harlock... Yes, you are right. The Japs might escape into Hailar from Borzya but even if they do they'll be on the back foot and I'll still have options to flank. With that said Manchuria is definitely a side-show right now... I'm making extremely good progress in Thailand. I have about 600 AV of tank formations ready to race down the paths from Ye towards the west of Bangkok and another 3,000+ AV ready to push down the trails from Moulmein to Rahaeng. I'm also airlifting a few hundred AV into Ubon. Essentially I'll hae three points of pressure on Bangkok ( directly west, north and east ). I'm also pinning a few BBs and several CVs/CVLs/CVEs at northern Malaysia --- these ships seem to be trying to prevent me capturing Victoria Point.... fine, I'll just go by land instead [:D]

In other news.... As the Japanese CVs have withdrawn to try to replenish and refuel I've sent my transports and surface combat vessels in. In response it seems the Japanese are moving east again ( without refuelling or rebuilding their airgroups ). My forces are positioned 4 hexes from Cold Bay and tomorrow they will dash in there and begin unloading. They will be NOT be CAPed at this time as I don't want to risk my CVs and am still rebuilding F4F4 airgroups so they'll have to withstand 2 days of unopposed IJN airstrikes. With that said I expect Cold Bay to fall on Day 3 and once it falls I have some 450 fighters ready to rotate in and out of Cold Bay in order to stand CAP and write down the IJN airgroups unto impotence. So, 2 days of heavy losses of ships followed by a couple of days of losses of airplanes. Once that's done I'll be able to LRCAP future invasions and will take the Aleutians relatively cheaply and easily. Shouldn't take me more than a month to be knocking on the door of Petropavlovsk.

By this stage the IJN carrier groups should be savaged and I should have made progress in Thailand and various other options will be opening up to me as:
a) KB's ability to defeat me in a mid-ocean engagement ( currently KB is at least double to triple my combat capability ) will be eroded,
b) his ground forces will be even more fully committed as I open up more axes of advance which he must commit reserves to close and
c) I get major reinforcements of new planes ( I get my first P-38s at the end of July and begin getting B-24s at the beginning of August) which will allow me to more easily bridge the gaps around Petropavlovsk.

I'll post a combat report tomorrow as I expect it to be a day of major action --- very one-sided in favour of Japan but this is like Ye... In the short term the losses will look massive but in the long run this is going to break the CV-based airgroups as thoroughly as Ye has broken the land-based ones.

My only slight concern is that he might commit all his BBs and CAs to this battle. If he does this I only have 4 BBs and about 8 CAs available to cover the landings. I have lots of CLs and DDs but in heavy units he should be able to outmass me. If this happens then he can force me away from the landing sites and could threaten the success of the invasion. To guard against this I've brought overwhelming numbers so that my ships can just outlast the Japanese and bury them with sheer weight of numbers. Still though his best chance of success is to simply send a battleline of ALL BBs and CAs into Cold Harbour in an effort to force me away from the landing sites on Day 1. If he does this and prevents me capturing Cold Harbour on Day 2 then he might just be able to hold out. If he doesn't then the instant Cold Harbour falls I'll have Avengers there torpedoing everything within 6 hexes.

Well, things get interesting. Mostly the Japanese actions today didn't achieve much of anything EXCEPT or their crippling of the Lion ( which has over 70 flotation damage and which I expect to sink. This is a real pity as I was going to link it up with one of the modern 16 inch USN BBs and create a 2nd BB TF. As it is I have 3 BBs at Cold Bay ( 2 x old 14 inchers and a modern 16 incher ) with another 16 incher on the way. I am expecting the majority of the IJN BBs and CAs to hit Cold Bay tomorrow as:
a) they aren't at Burma --- I see 3 BBs off Burma which would give him the ability to mass 7 BBs here. So, I expect to be hit by 7 BBs tomorrow.
c) there are about 3 to 5 CAs off Burma as escort for the CVs there so I can expect the rest to all be at the Aleutians.

In terms of CVs I expect that the total IJN build at present comprises 8 CVs, 2 CVAs, 8 CVLs and about 6 CVEs. I am expecting 2 CVs and the 6 CVEs to be off Burma and the other 6 CVs, 2 CVAs and 8 CVLs to be at the Aleutians. This would give the IJN a total of 350 fighters, 300 torpedo bombers and roughly 160 Vals plus whatever Bettys and Zeroes they can mass on the islands themselves. I have a total of about 250 carrier-based fighters and about 300 available land-based fighters. I have almost no reserves for the F4F4s as I've thrown away about 250 in attempts to increase my fighter pilot experience. The cost was heavy but I'm glad to say that my USN experience has increased from the mid-50s to high-60s and low-70s now. That extra experience should be absolutely crucial.

I've reached the island today, tomorrow I should land 2,000+ AV and then the day after I'll attack and capture the island. The day after that I'll have fighters there and be able to seriously attrit any enemy strikes. So, I have to weather today and then two more days. After that I can begin to attrit the Japanese heavily in the air and a week after THAT I get my first P-38s and start getting significant numbers of newly-arriving P-40E squadrons with which to keep my strength up and allow me to keep the pressure on.

So, onto today's battle.

Why am I so focusse on Bangkok? Well, if I take Bangkok I will have a land route running through Burma and into China itself in addition to the Burma Road. This will enable me to begin basing bombers etc in China and opening up an entirely new theatre of war... again stretching Damian thinner and thinner.

Still, I'm landing enough engineers that I can build a port or AF level in no more than a day or two. I have a LOT of engineers ;-)

Oh no, 1% of the transports committed to this operation have just been torpedoed. I must admit one of my primary emotions when playing as the Allies is a sort of over-arching amusement at just how profligate the Allies can be. It really is interesting to be in a position where the loss of 6 APs doesn't seriously curtail 2nd phase operations. I'm more used to playing the Japanese and husbanding planes and ships a lot more.

Still, different situation, different approach.

IJN CV-based strikes. There's a good fighter escort here. His CV fighters aren't as attrited as I would have imagined. I'm not quite sure what has happened here. It does seem that some of the airgroups he was flying a couple of days ago have been replaced with fresh airgoups. Hmm, I still think he is right at the edge of his logistics tether and, tentatively, I am interpreting the presence of a large number of IJA airgroups as meaning that his IJN pilot pools are very low and, allied with the fact that his Zeroes are no longer anywhere to be found in the air near Burma I think that he has concentrated all his Zeroes in the Aleutians.

So, my response remains the same... I'm going to continue writing his pools down at a rate he can afford less than me. Even if his reserves are deeper than I think my flow of reinforcements is about to increase significantly and that ought to allow me to outlast him even if I'm out with my figures.

Hmm, the PM strike is weak also and doesn't contain enough Vals... Since only CVs carry Vals I think that his CV TFs must not have launched and what I am seeing is mostly CVLs + maybe 1 ( perhaps 2 ) CVs. Tomorrow there'll be fresh strikes from up to 4 uncommitted CVs and the 2 CVAs. They'll be truly devastating.

Only 1 TF unloaded and its troops were eliminated by the end of day so I can't order ALL to Shock Attack and have it apply to what unloads tomorrow. Pity, if I'd been able to do that I might hae taken the base tomorrow and that would have helped protect my shipping.... Still, we're on target for the original timescale and that's fine enough. I knew my losses would be heavy when I set this in motion.

Vengeance for Suva.

So, about my TF organisation. I'm a believer in the 8 ship TF thing. I don't claim it is realistic but I do think that that's the way the game engine functions.

So, since the Lion is no longer available to create a 2nd BB TF I am creating the following:
1. ONE BB TF comprising 3 BBs, 2 CAs, 4 CLAAs and 3 DDs - to give a total of 12 ships. I went for twelve because I wanted a few DDs as ASW and wanted the 4 CLAAs for AAA work.
2. 3 x TF with 3 CA and 5 DD each.
4. 5 TF with 2 CL and 6 DD each.
5. 3 TF with roughly 12 DD each.
6. I also have two late-arriving TFs. One comprises about 10 CLs and the other comprises a BB, a couple of CLs and a gaggle of DDs.

Basically my plan is that IF the Japanese arrive over-night or tomorrow that the BB TF will meet their BBs head-on and inflict damage to both their BBs and light support ( DDs and CLs ). The BBs are there to hit IJN BBs while the CLAAs and DDs are there to kill enemy DDs and CLs.

After having their BBs damaged a little and a lot of their light escorts roughed up the enemy will run into my CA TFs. Each CA TF should be pretty much overwhelmed by the IJN ( just like the BB TF ) but by the time they are through my CA TFs I figure that the enemy CAs will also be pretty banged up and a good portion of their DDs will have been stripped away. In addition I feel that the BB main gun ammo should all have been fired by this stage.

In Phase 3 the enemy battleline ( up to 7 BBs and at least 10 CAs + a commensurate number of DDs and CLs ) should comprise:
a) enemy BBs who have no main gun ammo left
b) enemy CAs who are lightly to moderately damaged but fairly low on main gun ammo
c) enemy CLs and DDs who have all been pretty badly mauled by my DDs and CLAAs.

At this point in time they will hit my CL TFs whose purpose is to complete killing the enemy DDs and CLs, stripping the enemy BBs of their light supporting units.

IF the enemy continue then they will run into DD TFs whose only purpose is to close on the damaged, on fire CAs and BBs and pour torpedoes into them. Given the lack of escorts I think these DD TFs actually have a chance of success. To be honest though I expect the enemy ammunition and morale to give out somewhere during Phase 3 and the enemy battleline to retreat after sinking a few CAs, CLAAs and CLs and badly damaging my 3 BBs as well as sinking a dozen DDs and leaving another dozen to two-dozen crippled but before actually engaging the landing forces.

With their ships out of ammo the enemy will have to retreat and that will give me time to take the base and force his shipping to retreat completely out of torpedo attack range.

The IJN will win the battle in that it will sink BBs and CAs and a lot of CLs and DDs BUT I will have achieved my strategic objective and will be able to fully protect all future landings in the Aleutians chain from enemy battleline interference. I would, of course, organise my TFs differently if I was going for a win in terms of meeting him head-on with TFs which were BB and CA-heavy ( e.g. 3 BB, 5 CA, 2 DD in one TF and 8 CA and 2 DD in another TF ) BUT meeting him like that would run the risk of him running into my transport TFs while he still had ammunition and morale left and I'd rather accept surety in defending my transports than go for a "win" in a naval battle at the risk of losing the battle to capture the island ( which is the strategically decisive thing ).
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )

Post by Nemo121 »

Well the surface battle happened today and it was a bit of a tactical disaster for the Allies - as expected - but also, most importantly, a strategic victory. The transports were untouched and while losses in CLs were very heavy overall losses were acceptable.

The little island between Cold Harbour and Umnak Island has a Level 4 Port and so once Cold Harbour falls I'm going to load 1st USMC back up again and send it in to capture that Level 4 port. The idea here will be to immediately capture a little bastion into which i can filter the most heavily damaged of my ships. Won't this draw enemy airstrikes? Sure but I can post 50 fighters there as CAP and LOTS of AAA which will help kill lots of those enemy strike planes... in essence striking those ported ships will carry the opportunity cost of missed potential strikes against my CVs.

Really heavy damage from only a small number of hits per ship. I am interpreting this as meaning that the CLs got hit by main BB and CA rounds and this should mean that those BBs and CAs are pretty short on ammo right now.

Another day of minimal strikes from KB. I think that picking the Aleutians as my searoute into Japan has paid massive dividends. Out of 3 days in which they could have struck only half of KB struck on a single day. That's only one-sixth of the potential strikes and obviously has kept a lot of Allied ships in action.

I should have Rahaeng by the end of the week so while I hate ordering these strikes it is still necessary to prevent Japanese fighters suddenly sweeping Rangoon or Moulmein from Rahaeng. I'm down to only 100 first-line fighters in the whole of India/Burma --- although Damian doesn't know this as I'm front-loading these fighters --- so a single day's sweeps could ruin my air force for the next month. But, so long as I can keep the enemy pinned back in bases beyond Mike sweep range ( 2 hexes ) then they'll never have the chance to cripple me like this.

Cold Bay falls today. Tomorrow about 3,000 AV are going to try to blow the doors open on the road to Rahaeng. Basically I have the entire British ( and a fair bit of the Chinese Army --- all transferred to UK South-East Asia command as per house rules ) footborne army beating down that path while the British armoured forces ( abotu 500 AV ) make their way west of Bangkok from Ye and a Chinese army moves in from the East. If things work out just right I should be able to isolate Bangkok on three sides.

The Japanese ground situation here is pretty catastrophic. If I were the Japanese I'd be pouring reinforcements into Malaysia with the mission of halting me at Bangkok. There's no point trying to hold Vietnam or anything east of Bangkok anymore as that will just result in him being trapped between two forces ( The Chinese Army at Hue and the British Army at Bangkok ) and, eventually, having to be sealifted out--- something which he'll find very costly once I get airbases established ---. No, he needs to send troops into Malaysia so that he can most assuredly hold the Malaysian peninsula north of Singora.

So, time to enact a little sub-plan to prevent his forces streaming northward in sufficient force to hold me at a chokepoint. That plan should be put into action over the next 2 days, depending on the movement of the IJN CVs off the Malaysian coast.

In the Aleutians 1st USMC is loading up again in order to bounce westward before the IJN can get back into port and refuel and reprovision. So, speed as armour. It didn't work for the Leopard I but maybe it'll work for the USMC? [8D]

Aye, so it seems. I think the FlAK did some of the damage though. I'm awaiting his first raids on Cold Bay with anticipation. I have stacked it with so much FlAK that I barely need fighters to defend it [:D]

Now that I have four functional airbases within range of Rahaeng/Bangkok I can begin to bring the full weight of my Il-2s to bear. This ought to enable me to keep the Japanese on the road to Rahaeng suppressed whilst keeping the level bombers free for such targets of opportunity as might present themselves.

These Dauntlesses and Avengers were unloaded from AKs docked at Cold Bay. ALL of my CVs are now at Cold Bay also getting reacquainted with their escorts etc. I was going to send them westward a little to cover the transports moving to the little island east of Umnak BUT I spotted 8 IJN TFs just 5 or 6 hexes from Cold Bay. It looks like the Japanese are coming back so I'm unloading the 1st USMC and withdrawing my CVs - but allowing them to LRCAP Cold Bay from out at sea. Well, we'll see how it goes.

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )

Post by Nemo121 »

Over the next two days things have been pretty light. The expected IJN attack didn't develop and I've taken the opportunity to send my fleet back to Kodiak for resupply. I've also debarked my CV planes and gotten my CVs refuelled and on their way out of range. The Japanese focus remains on Cold Harbour and my fleet manoeuvres while, all the time, the real threat is developing through the machinations of my next two operations - aka Operation "He's behind you" and Operation "Q The Flying Serpent".

Operation "Q The Flying Serpent" is going to be prepped tomorrow and kick off the day after and basically comprises paradrops on everything in the Aleutians which isn't heavily garrisoned while Operation "He's Behind You" results from Damian failing to secure all the bases in his rear and thus allowing me to freely air transport forces onto one of them.... One which can be built up to the sort of airbase which can dominate the entire Aleutians. This represents an extremely serious error on his part although, to be fair, the action at Cold Bay would be enough to fix almost anyone's attention wholeheartedly there.

In other news: In a day or two I expect the total air to air losses total to shift in the Allies favour. As of today the Allies have lost 3,011 planes in A2A while the Japanese have lost 3,008. For the middle of 1942 it is pretty damned respectable to be shooting down more Japs than one is losing so I'm looking forward to this milestone.

So, basically, I'm dodging his carriers and sneaking around complicating his operational picture with low-cost, medium return operations which synergise ( I hate the word but its apt in this case ) to rapidly deteriorate his operational picture.
E.g. Let's say I infest a base in his rear and threaten to build it up to house bombers. He can either abandon the front line bases he DOES hold ( a bad option since that will result in me advancing speedily ), fight an air battle to keep the base closed ( a bad option since that will allow me to fight defensive air battles ( which gives me a major attritional advantage ) to protect a base which isn't crucial to me ( and thus even if I lose but attrit him a lot I've actually won ), OR he can counter-invade it with forces taken from Umnak or Adak Islands ( a bad option since that weakens those bases and makes it more likely that a direct assault by my forces will capture him ). This ( creating a situation in which each of his possible reactions to my moves creates a situation even more favourable to me ) is what I mean when I talk about:
a) shaping the battlefield and
b) complicating his operational picture
c) allowing him to keep his options open /retain the initiative since having options doesn't matter much when the only thing exercising those options does is to weaken your situation even further.

Well, that's enough for now. I get P-38s in about 6 days and I can't wait to try them out. This version of the mod features major fixes to twin-engined and four-engined plane combat factors such that twin-engined fighters should now be much more of a match for their single-engined opponents. No longer will the P-38 fly like some unmanoeuvrable bomber. No, now it will fly like a fighter --- although it won't be some ueber-plane like some people seem to want.

He lost a third of his Bettys to do this. That's a Daitai of Bettys which won't be torpedoing my ships in a couple of days. Admittedly he has more than enough Kates to seal the deal but every little bit helps.

You've really taken my advice on P-39's to heart -- but maybe you might want to assign other fighter types to CAP duty as well?[;)]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

LOL! No, there's no need to over-react to this. In fact the true mistake here would be to take fighters from the front line and put them into rear echelon bases where their impact on the war would be far, far reduced.

No, in moving forward I'm going to take pressure off the rear echelon bases. Next invasion due in a couple of days.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/08/42

Well, his best option was to do nothing and realise that the invasion of two bases which could never be more than Level 3 airfields was not the decisive move in this theatre. Instead he has counter-invaded. Since each counter-invasion is going to take a Bde or so ( 100 AV ) that means that he has to remove 200 AV from Adak Island - THE crucial fulcrum on which this theatre will turn. In short he hasn't looked at the greater strategic picture and is, instead, focussed on the minor tactical possibility of kicking me out of 1 or 2 worthless islands.

Very well, I'll continue with my primary operations. 4 Division equivalents are loaded onto ships and on their way to their target zones. Do I expect them to succeed greatly? Not really but they will bring the enemy fleet and air force into action and that will certainly allow me to cause them considerable loss. Over the next few days I would expect that you will see the Allied fleet alternately dashing in bravely and then slinking away and refusing battle as I use the fleet and tens of thousands of troops as a cape with which to goad the bull of the IJN CVs and battlefleet into a fatal charge which will end up coming out in my favour.

Obviously though this could all go wrong and Damian could catch me out and sink 3/4 of the remaining USN fleet. That would be disquieting [8D] BUT that potential is why we play the game. After all, if success was certain I'd quit since the certainty of success negates the possibility of challenge and without challenge there's no point.

Ah, resource bombing. I spy with my little eye something beginning with "the input of forumites into Damian's planning process". Someone's obviously had a chat with him about resource bombing and the centrality of logistics --- or he has just remembered his van Creveld. Based on whom I know has been pointing to his AAR I'd say ny59giants and AndyMac made the suggestion. Alfred would have if he'd posted but I have only observed him posting to 2ndACR's AAR ( hiya BTW, and yes since I've seen him post I've begun to take account of it in my planning... hence some of the recent reshuffling of forces to account for his probable advice ).

In any case this is good advice ( and I certainly encourage people to continue posting such advice ) and Damian should engage in resource bombing. The only problem with that is that if he engages in resource bombing of me then I'm going to redouble my efforts to secure a nice base within range of Japan and reduce it to ruin. Still, resource bombing is a good gambit for him although one which, I think, will be less successful than he would wish as I'm about to get a big glut of reinforcements and that will enable me to guard against this sort of thing much better.

I'll let these attacks continue for some days so he feels regularity and derives comfort from it and then I'll smash them with massive fighter ambushes. But, for now, let him bask in a good plan put into action and uncountered.

From a psychological point of view it is far more devastating to lose 100 bombers in a day on missions which you FELT were beginning to turn the tide than it is to lose those 100 bombers on those same missions before you got that glimmer of hope. This is why, often, one sees great generals turning down the possibility of gaining a slight military advantage in favour of letting things go against them for a short while in order to gain the opportunity of gaining a psychologically crushing advantage later. In war the moral is to the physical as 3 is to 1. It is a very insightful statement.

And no, I'm not comparing myself to Barca the Elephant-lover but there's no harm in pointing out the precedent I'm following in allowing Damiang to see a glint of success before I slam the door shut--- on his fingers.

Day Air attack on Adak Island [AK] , at 97,38

A6M2-N Rufe-FF x 1

Allied aircraft
Mosquito NF x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Mosquito NF: 4 destroyed

I'm just using the Mosquitoes until they are used up. No point keeping them as the night bombing threat really hasn't shown itself and, soon enough, I'll get the Night-fighter variant of the Beaufighter.

Hmm, it won't be long now before he re-opens the road to his troops north of Hailar. Well, c'est la guerre. The gambit failed but it did succeed in taking the initiative away from him in yet another theatre. I'll try again once the situation stabilises.

Hmm, it would make sense for Damian to attack here. On this bases I'm assigning my bomber forces in this theatre to leave Rahaeng alone for a couple of days and concentrate their strikes here. If I can hold it'll make the job of running down to Bangkok from Burma much easier. It won't be at all disastrous if I don't hold as the main job of this army's advance on Lop Buri was simply to keep the Japanese far away from the Level 7 airfield ( potentially ) I capture inland. I have finished airlifting the 93rd Field Army in from Rangoon and have another Army about 2 or 3 days away on the overland route from China with 2 Divisions and 1 Army on the road in China towards the inland base. That ought to be more than enough to hold it.

I'm pretty much at full strength in the air over Kodiak and I think that the day after tomorrow I'll move out, on a deceptive route, toward my next objective. The IJN CVs are parked only 6 hexes from Cold Bay and so everyone is well within range of everyone else. If I was feeling particularly suicidal I could make a strong raid even now with my Wildcats, Avengers and Dauntlesses but I think that I'll wait to draw the IJN surface fleet in first with some feints and, eventually, real landings.

In other news: I'm almost out of F4F4s but I've decided to downgrade the USMC squadrons once battle is joined and hope that the huge number of F4F3s in the stockpile ( over 300 ) will help eke my front-line squadrons through this next battle. In 4 weeks time I get so many USAAF units that replacements shouldn't be a problem at all in the future but right now things are VERY tight for my fighter units.

Tomorrow I get the P-38s and I really want to see how they do in the upcoming battle. I think I can have them in action in 3 days which ought to get them into action after the first day or so of major aerial action. This ought to compensate for their low experience levels by letting them face fatigued IJN pilots.

On that note: The P-38 has a speed of 400 mph. The best IJN fighter has a top speed of about 375mph ( round figures here ) and is the Ki-44 II. The next best is the Ki-109 which has a speed of about 350mph and last is the A6M2 which has a top speed of about 325mph. Right now, in the Aleutians I am ONLY facing A6M2s. This is a major error. In a defensive battle the Ki-109 is so far superior to the A6M2 that it results in an entirely different battle occuring. Sure the P-38 pilots are low in experience BUT I'm expecting great things from them since their speed advantage is going to be triple what it should really be and I'm willing to bet that that's going to result in a pretty cool exchange rate, particularly since those Zero pilots are going to be tired.... Can you tell I'm excited? [:D]
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.
