RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )
I did not initially suggest the Resource bombing, but did concur it was a good idea.
I'm "slowly" trying to give him a more advances course in "Psych Warfare" and to look at things from multiple levels. He seems to be comfortable in the reaction vs.action mode at this time, which may not be good for him in short and long term.
You have gone via the "Northern Route" in other games before regardless of which side you have played, so he should have planned accordingly.

On the first charge, I plead "Not guilty, milord - I don't even read Damian's AAR."
On the second charge I confess "I did it - but initially only in response to a public request from 2ndACR for suggestions, and subsequently only because my suggestions appear to be cavalierly dismissed". With the paucity of data provided, it is really difficult to provide in depth commentary.

Sorry, but your suggestions are not dismissed in any way. I have taken all to heart and have even moved in some of the directions you suggested. Not all of them, but you keep me thinking if and when I start seeing the boogy man here.
RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )
Uhoh, people seem to have taken me up wrongly again. Guys, I am delighted to see discussion in my OR opponents' AARs. For me an AAR serves only two purposes:
1. Putting down strategy and tactics etc for people to read and learn from.
2. Causing people to butt in with their 2 cents and generate a discussion.
So, please, by all means go ahead and keep chatting, discussing and advising.
ny59giants,
Indeed, you are correct. Damian's a lovely bloke but he has definitely fallen into the trap of seeing what he sees and reacting to that as opposed to LOOKing at what he sees, looking at what he doesn't and then placing himself in his opponent's situation to see what sort of plan this mix of sightings & non-sightings, acceptances and declinations of combat. I, of course, within the game have decided to take full advantage of that although, to be fair, I have given him a few pointers on particular issues which I think would help ( e.g. I cut and paste the whole "How to deal with B-17s/Pe-2s" thing and have made a few points re: how certain dispositions could point to my future plans.
Already I think his responses are becoming more sophisticated and he's looking for plans within plans but he hasn't, yet, learned that just because there is an action he isn't required to give a reaction. IOW he hasn't really learned to subordinate the tactical and operational to the strategic in the way that Soviet doctrine, rightly, insists it must be. But, to be fair, I'd say 90%+ of the AARs I have read here show a similar failure.
We'll see soon enough as the ship movements over the next few days should provide a fairly sophisticated test of our ability to divine eachother's intentions and act appropriately.
Long story short though I think he's learning and is playing better than he did last month. Next month he'll be better than he currently is and that's the whole goal of playing IMO, to get better over time.
Alfred,
Well, feel free to keep advising. As you know I think your analyses are excellent ( the ones I've read anyways... In a couple of years I hope to read the ones you are currently making and will comment on them then
) and help give a different perspective on things.

Fionn,
I think it helps that both of us are in mental health. We both are given information from our client's, but we know that is only part of the picture and we have to use our clinicial skills to get to the root problem. I've enjoyed just "watching" people for almost 20 years as I can learn a lot from it.
Damian is in computers and software where things are more "black and white." I was there for almost 15 years and you get use to things being one way or the other with very little gray.

Michael,
I think you're perhaps oversimplifying the engineering mindset; its not that most engineers actually believe that the world can be accurately represented by a set of binary absolutes.
Rather engineer's are trained, socialized, and led by their own experience, to reduce ambiguous problems into a smaller number of solvable absolutes. A good engineer faced with a mass of uncertain data will generally try to find some problem within the domain that IS solvable and propose working on that. That's why you'll often hear an engineer end a conversation wiht a sniff of "that's not a solvable problem" and walk away.
The idea is that some things aren't solvable and its a waste of time to focus on them. Rather resources should be focussed onto project which do have an available solutions.
You could say that this represents Damien's gameplay flaw e.g. that he's focussing on "solvable" sideshows rather than intervening to "solve" a theatre wide problem, but I don't think that's a failure of his mindset.
Rather I think its a failure of imagination. He doesn't see how to solve the big problem, so he's solving those problems he can.
To be fair to him, he may be in such a bad way in this game that his strategic situation is unsolvable, but I doubt that.

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )
Interesting discussion.... Once, a while back, I was groomed to become a Software Development Manager with Mr Gates in order to work within his Medical Informatics division. On the back of this I got exposed to a lot of software engineers, a few managers and a fair bit of code. Later on, after I decided to stick with clinical medicine, I wrote a couple of programmes which are used in a few Irish hospitals so I've seen this from both sides.
I would suggest that a significant number of computer programmers have Asperger's. I've read a bit about Grigsby and a couple of other wargame programmers and I've got to admit that I'd love to meet them for 30 minutes and check 'em for Aspergers. If they have Aspergers then, obviously, they're going to have difficult with insoluble issues but even within software engineers the majority won't have Aspergers, although it will be over-represented vis a vis the entirety of the population.
I do think that clinical psychologists and doctors ( particularly doctors ) are used to being given insoluble problems. Many times when I was working in the E.R. I saw people who were really obviously going to die. That didn't matter, we went through the algorithms, did everything possible, turned it around in our minds and tried to come at it from every possible angle to make sure we didn't miss anything and sometimes ( very rarely ) the person might actually live. I think doctors institutionalise harsh pragmatism with a bit of unreasoning optimism
.
We don't have the option of getting a patient and going, "That's not solvable". When the "not solvable" problem is a living, breathing but currently dying and suffering patient "that's not solvable" isn't sufficient. You HAVE to solve the problem and keep on trying to solve the problem right up until the time that you call it and pronounce them dead. Sure you may "know" it can't be solved but you can't plan and act that way. Keep plugging away and sometimes inspiration strikes and you CAN solve it. Even if you can't solve it at least you'll be able to look yourself in the mirror the next day knowing that you didn't quit on someone's father or mother or brother or sister when there was still something, anything that you could think of trying. It is a dichotomy but even when it can't be solved I ( and I think most other doctors ) keep plugging away, hoping for a lucky break and sometimes, very rarely, we get them. Sure we may know its hopeless and we may be right 99.5% of the time BUT if we give up then we lose 100% of the patients... and you only need to bring back 1 patient who you knew was going to die to realise that that made all the other "wasted" effort on the other 199 out of 200 patients worthwhile. I've lost count of the number of times I'e been shopping in the local supermarket ( when I lived within a mile of the hospital I worked at ) and had people shout out to me --- usually leaving me incredibly confused and going "who the hell are they?"
--- only to have them tell me how their granny was now doing great etc etc etc. Anyways, enough of that.
I wouldn't want to get too philosophical etc BUT if you look at my plans you can see lots of things which "the rules" would say are idiotic... Invading bases without LRCAP under the eyes of almost all of KB. Sounds crazy. Same with Malaysia, same with taking the fight to the Japanese when they are getting MORE and BETTER fighters per month than I'm getting. But I think that because I just never accept the conventional wisdom ( and that's more an innate personality trait than anything taught by medicine ) certain avenues which others might dismiss at the outset DO remain open and sometimes I'm able to make something effective and cost-efficient out of them.
I would suggest that his failure in imagination is NOT in being unable to solve the big problem but rather lies in not being able to encompass reframing and recontextualising the problem.
Back when I used to test Combat Mission scenarios for people as a favour I once got a scenario in which a weak Italian infantry force with 3 little self-propelled howitzers was being attacked by a superior Soviet infantry force backed by a company of T-34s. Basically the Italians were outnumbered by 3 to 1 in infantry and tanks and also the Soviet units were each superior in terms of firepower as well as numbers. On the other hand I saw that the terrain lent itself to channelling the Soviets, ambushing them and then counter-attacking.
So, despite the fact that the Soviets were the attacker and the Italians the defender I decided to ambush them and then move over into a full-scale attack of my own counting on confusion and disbelief to let me wipe out so many of the enemy that the end-stage of the battle would be a meeting engagement between enemy reserves and my own forces ( assuming I'd wipe out the enemy first and second attacking echelons before the reserve could be committed ). The end result was that I over-ran the enemy reinforcement zones and had the enemy reinforcements magically appear BEHIND my troops because my counter-attack had advanced so far so quickly. The designer, when I sent him the report, didn't believe me and I had to send him a saved game file.
Now, I'm not saying that I'm some tactical genius but what I am saying is that neither the designer nor any of his testers had actually EVER considered anything but defending just like the instructions at the start of the scenario commanded. When they defended they let the Soviets gang up on them and swamp them and I was actually sent the scenario to test on the basis that NONE of his testers had ever won it and he was wondering how he should tweak it ( by weakening the Soviets and strengthening the Italians ) in order to allow the Italians to hang on.
By refusing to accept the context within which he and the other testers conceptualised the challenge and recontextualising it not as "Defend against the Soviets and preent them over-running you" but rather as "Defeat the Soviet force in the most efficient manner possible" new avenues on which to approach the problem opened up. Will those new avenues always be superior? No, BUT if you don't consider them you'll neer have the option of using them if they are.
So, I don't think that Damian is making a serious error in imagination in solving "the problem". I think he is just failing to contextualise "the problem" properly. So, instead of asking "How do I stop Fionn's advance in the Aleutians?" which is a narrow question which is very strictly parameterised he needs to change the context and say "Fionn has a plan. I want to derail that and buy time."
He shouldn't be seeking to stop my advance in the Aleutians or "buy time" there. He needs to throw the whole plan out of kilter and dislocate it. He can't do that in the Aleutians but he can if he recontextualises and looks not at stopping a component of the plan but at threatening to dislocate the entire plan. And now for the answer to how he can dislocate the entire plan for 6 months --- sufficient time to rebuild his air force, navy and army.
What he actually needs to do now to stop this all happening is simple and would absolutely work:
1. Invade Hawaii, leave a small garrison and then go on to invade Panama. This would cut off ALL reinforcements from CONUSA to Oz and India AND ensure that my next target would have to be Panama. In short he would save the Sakhalin Islands for 6 months by forcing me to retake Panama.
2. Invade and take Ceylon, base lots of Bettys and Ki-109s there and fight a PURELY DEFENSIVE battle there. Let his fighters CAP his own bases and kill my pilots where I can't rescue them and let his Betties prevent any raids down on Java etc. Sure I can still bring troops in from Aden to karachi and then march them south BUT that is slow and taking Ceylon will add 2 months to my reinforcement journey time.
3. Capture Perth and its environs. Again to prevent shifting of forces from Oz to India or vice versa.
By doing these 3 things he will slow the pace of my offensives AND force each of the isolated zones ( CONUSA, Oz/NZ, India ) to rely ONLY on its own resources and since each of these zones has critical deficiencies in one or more types of combat capability ( Oz is very weak on shipping and bombers , India is strong but not really capable of any major amphibious invasions without a lot more reinforcement, CONUSA s strong in most areas but totally committed to the Aleutians right now ). That's what he should do. Obviously though as I've identified these as major risks I have fortified and garrisoned the places mentioned above appropriately. If he brings ten divisions to each he might take it but I don't think he has 3,000 AV to spare right now.
Can he hit me elsewhere? Yes but it won't be decisive and so I'll ignore strikes elsewhere, except mainland India but I have several thousand AV in reserve there waiting to hit him should he try that.

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )
I've read a bit about Grigsby and a couple of other wargame programmers and I've got to admit that I'd love to meet them for 30 minutes and check 'em for Aspergers.
For whatever it's worth, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Grigsby about twenty years ago at a gaming convention. I found him to be quite reasonable in his conversation -- when I suggested he'd made a mistake in one of his OOB's he was willing to check into it. (It turned out that I was wrong, not he.) It is possible that as the complexity of programming has increased over the years, he and other programmers have had to become more narrowly specialized.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Another point worth mentioning, since I am a professional programmer, is that programming is one of those professions like, say, music composition where the cost of any interruption far exceeds the duration of the interruption itself.
Come into my office when I'm holding a complex problem in my head for a quick, 30 second question, and I've lost an hours work.
That's why, in my experience, programmers tend to be a) jealous of their private time and b) less than pleased by many interruptions.
FWIW though I don't think modern coding is any more complicated than it used to be; quite the contrary, modern languages are far, far more approachable and modern code far more readable than, say, old mainframe assembler (you think reading somebody else's perl is bad, try reading assembler from the early '70s). What you do see though is that the skill set required to produce an application has gotten so broad that no one man covers it. Modern applications are generally the product of teams of specialists for the simple reason that no generalist is going to be a good enough programmer, designer, documentation writer, artist, and sound guy to make a modern game.

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )
In reply to Casey I'd agree 100% . being an old COBOL and pascal programmer (badly) compared to newer coding protocols its nowadays a comparative doddle.
completely OT to Nemo though whats considered a mental disorder and whats normal? afaik lots of so called mental disorders are modern day pigeon holing to sell drugs that aren't necessary ( no I'm not a hippy ). [:D] Obviously that's a gross generalization so i'll shut up and let the best witp player carry on with the currently (imo) best AAR .

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )
Couple of points:
1. Even if every programmer in the world had Aspergers I would say "so what" ? Some of the patients I am most fond of in terms of them being nice people who just have some issues in getting around in society have Aspergers. I am reminded of the time when someone in the recent American election campaign stated she wouldn't be voting for Abama because "he is an Arab". Now, a) he isn't and b) so what if he was? Being an Arab isn't a bad thing. Being a nutter who wants to blow loads of people up and get 72 virgins makes you a bad person but being of the same ethnicity as some of those nutters has no real causation attached to it.
So, even if all programmers had Aspergers, so what? Hell, lots of famous people throughout society had Aspergers... Just to name a couple of examples people might be very familiar with here --- Cavendish ( around the time of Newton ) who did almost as much for science as Newton most assuredly had Aspergers as did Stonewall Jackson ( he just ticks most of the boxes ).... I'm quite sure the world wouldn't be nearly as advanced as it is today if it weren't for autism and BPAD in particular. Both of them are wildly over-represented in the ranks of people who have been felt to be "brilliant" in their field OR ( and this is crucial ) in their families. E.g. Studies have shown that the RELATIVES of those with BPAD tend to be doing better than average given their social class etc ( better being measured in terms of income and suchlike ) and it seems to be that when you talk to these people they often have some hypomanic traits ( liking to work long hours and great energy, getting big ideas and then working hard to carry them through to completion etc ) but nothing which reaches the level of BPAD. So, be thankful for mental illness. It might be a bit of a disaster for the person who has those traits to the extent that they get a diagnosable disorder ( although not by any means always -- Cavendish, Jackson, possibly Newton etc ) but we ALL exist on a spectrum and those who are more toward the autistic or BPAD end of the spectrum than others but not to the extent that we have a disorder may actually get an advantage from it.
Actually this is a good example of the whole "Everything's grey" difference in mindset with programmers ( and I feel confident in saying this since I programmed a bit back in the day ). Even the creation of checklists to tick and if someone has 5 ticks they have a disorder is a bit of a nonsense. There isn't any discrete gap in behaviour between people with a specific mental illness and those who don't. Instead its just like a spectrum with most people clustered around the middle and then those near the edges becoming fewer and fewer. At a certain point they are so far from the mean of the spectrum that we say they have " Disorder x". In reality though there may be someone who is 1% closer to the mean of the spectrum who doesn't meet the criteria but in talking to them or seeing them go about their everyday life that 1% difference will be almost unnoticeable. So its all really quite arbitrary and MUCH greyer than most people think.
2. The growing prediliction for creating diagnoses, then widening the diagnostic criteria until almost anyone can fit the criteria and then prescribing ALL of those people medications. I agree completely. My area of interest is PTSD and it is most assuredly a real thing. I've diagnosed it in car crash victims, Irish soldiers, US soldiers who have retired to Ireland after serving in iraq etc etc so it is realy BUT the widening of diagnostic criteria is so ridiculous now that they have diagnosed full-blown PTSD in people who have only WATCHED stressful incidents on TV. There are case reports of people being given disability, medications etc after having watched news programmes about earthquakes half-way round the world.
My current favourite are some of the "checklist" ads I've seen which have aired on TV in America which are designed to get the highest possible percentage of viewers to say "Yes" to some of the symptoms listed and convince them that they have said "illness" and that they NEED medications. Absolute utter BS.
Also, nowadays, I'm dealing with a lot of parents coming in SEEKING a diagnosis of ADHD for their children in order to get drugs to "control" their kid's behaviour. Sometimes, fair enough, the kids do have ADHD but at least 50% of the time what I actually find is that the kid is just running riot because they have inconsistent parenting and are unable to put up a reasonable united front and impose discipline on this 4 or 5 year old child. No, its easier to give the kid a pill than it is to put the time and effort into setting up boundaries and enforcing them so that's what people want --- a lot of the time they are looking for "the quick fix".
So, yeah, while I'm a fan of medications WHEN USED APPROPRIATELY I think that psychiatry and society have gone utterly off the reservation in recent years with the whole " a pill for any ill" ethos. There's a huge deficit in personal responsibility and parenting which people are trying to fill with pills because its "easier"... Ridiculous. If you need pills then you need them, that's that but if you don't need them then why on earth would you want ( or want your child ) to run the risk of side-effects, interactions etc etc.
So, Rob et al, feel free to continue this conversation. I find it refreshing to talk to non-doctors who agree that tablets aren't the be all and end all. Every day people are traipsing through my doors looking for tablets to solve their social and inter-personal problems. Its nice to hear that not everyone kicks it that way.
Oh and as to the "what's normal and what's mental illness". I've seen people diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder ( aka manic depression ) simply because their behaviour is "unmanageable" --- and usually when you dig down deep you find that they are in a home in which the parents have a lot of relational issues and never were able to put in clear, reasonable boundaries such that the child's behaviour got more and more out of order and, now, when they are an adult they're completely off the rails. Well, I'm sorry but that's nothing to do with BPAD. Hell, I once saw someone diagnosed with BPAD because when she fought with her husband she wouldn't stand up to him face to facebut would just go out behind his back and buy ten thousand euros worth of shoes on their credit card in order to get back at him. These shopping sprees were used to justify a diagnoses of BPAD with intermittent spurts of mania caused by the stress of the fight. Utter BS.
With that said though there are certain disorders which are obviously not normal - BPAD, severe depression, schizophrenia, severe autism etc. I think the key is not whether or not it is normal but whether or not it is "ok". When we use normal in this sort of discussion it carries with it the implied taint that the not normal ( abnormal if you will ) is BAD and WRONG. Sure people with autism mightn't be "normal" but that doesn't imply any "wrongness" or threat or anything like that. It just means that on the spectrum of societal behaviour and brain structure they fall farther to one end of the spectrum than most of us. Same with schizophrenia and depression etc.
One of the things I can't stand are people who paint all people with mental illness as "weird and threatening" or "poor people we have to treat with kid gloves and always make allowances for". No, they're just people like you and I who lie at one end of the spectrum with respect to brain functioning or emotional regulation or whatever. Some are absolutely lovely, some are reasonably nice like most people and some are utter a**holes I wouldn't let near me except that its my job to treat them. And I think that, honestly that's the best way to view mental illness --- a particular difference this person has which we must take some account for but which doesn't make them good or bad or a victim and doesn't mean I should treat them any differently than their personality and behaviour towards me warrants.
And no, I'm not saying anyone here has said anything which shows prejudice or unwarranted molly-coddling of people with mental illness but its just a bit of a hot-button topic for me as every day I see a failure to treat them just like everyone else and instead a surfeit of unnecessary harshness and failure to account for their particular issues OR an over-accounting for their issues such that those issues become an excuse for things which have nothing to do with any illness they may have.
ok, I'm giving the soap box back now [:D]. OBVIOUSLY these views are purely my own.
Rob, thanks re: the comment about the AAR. I do hope people find it interesting but one never knows whether people find it useful or just boring old schlock so, thanks.

Well, that's that settled then.
Well, that's that settled then.

So, he landed a Bde at Atka but it still isn't enough to take the place. Now he sees why it was such a mistake to try to retake Atka at the expense of Adak. I've lost 100 transports in the past 2 days to fly in the troops necessary to secure Atka but the price was worth it as it has caused his assault to fail entirely.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Dutch Harbor [AK]
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 1702 troops, 33 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 55
Defending force 576 troops, 12 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1
This is important to explain. I have moved about 6 division equivalents ( pretty beat up so they won't actually have 2,000 AV, more like 1200 or so AV ) to Dutch Harbour on board transports and BBs, CAs, CLs and DDs. I allowed one Fast Transport group to unload at Dutch harbour and bemoaned my "mistake" as I want to convince Damian to send his SC TFs into Dutch harbour as opposed to Umnak. I'm sure that he will have them set to retire to Umnak and Adak just to cover his bases but by not being at Dutch harbour I hope to run into only half his fleet as he'll split the retirements between Umnak and Adak.
Why the "mistake"? Well, people are much more willing to believe a feint if your plan goes awry. Surely it is more convincing to have more than 600 men landing on Dutch harbour accompanied by an explanation that those guys were idiots and jumped the gun as you wanted to minimise the number of phases over which unloading occurred in order to cut down on disablements on landing than it is to just rest the 200 ships at Dutch Harbour but rest no-one?
These 600 men are, of course, dead but such is life and war.

This is the message which puzzled Damian and, I think, drew his attention to Dutch Harbour above all else. I might be wrong but I had to try for some misdirection as my BBs are pretty beaten up right now.

Japanese Unit(s) surrounded at Dutch Harbor [AK]
This is the message which puzzled Damian and, I think, drew his attention to Dutch Harbour above all else. I might be wrong but I had to try for some misdirection as my BBs are pretty beaten up right now.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.
Well, that's that settled then.

[/center]RE: Asperger's Disorder
I dunno, my educated layman's take on Asperger's was that it was the clinicalization of geekiness.
Hey, my son's a geek.
No he isn't maam, he has a clincal diagnosis: Asperger's syndrome, and needs extensive therapy and possibly medication. Naturally, I can provide this service if you can just sign right here on the line ...
As long as the kid in question is functional and isn't himself unhappy with the way he interacts with society, then I don't see any need for clinical intervention.
Society, after all, needs people who can focus aggressively on narrow subject. They're our code breakers, composers, theoreticians, and, yes, a lot of our best computer programmers.

RE: Asperger's Disorder
Pat, I think the key phrase is "clinically significant"... IOW it would, in practice, be almost unheard of to diagnose Asperger when neither the person nor the family find their differences distressing --- at least partly because people who don't think there's anything wrong don't tend to present to a doctor for review [:D].
As to geeks vs Aspergers. Well, most people with Aspergers would be "geeks" but only a tiny fraction of geeks could eer be thought to have Aspergers. So, its all to do with sets.

My next ambush will be a little west as that seems to be the direction of drift of the Japanese resource bombing campaign. he's obviously shifting targets BUT he's being predictable in his shifting with bombers basing out of the same bases for 2 or 3 days at a time. Given daily basing at the same base, finite bomber range and a finite number of targets it becomes pretty easy to deduce what he's going to hit on Days 2 and 3. On Day 2 you might hae a 50/50 chance of connecting with an ambush but by Day 3 his "random" attacks will be utterly predictable.
There's a lesson there for readers.

Tomorrow I'll take Umnak and then I'll be able to advance up the rest of the chain under P-40E cover. 17 days away from receiving my major P-40E reinforcements. So, by that stage I plan to be damned, damned close to Japan proper and in position to take advantage of those P-40E numbers.
As to geeks vs Aspergers. Well, most people with Aspergers would be "geeks" but only a tiny fraction of geeks could eer be thought to have Aspergers. So, its all to do with sets.
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/11/42
Today's a bad day for Japan. With the painful initial stages of the Aleutian campaign over my losses should begin to start falling while IJN losses will begin to increase.

RE: Asperger's Disorder
I've had a chat with Damian and advised him that while he is doing well tactically ( and he really is as:
a) he started out with forces stronger than mine and while I've written them down his forces are still superior
b) he still holds the capability to deliver a stinging defeat IF he's willing to lose the Eastern portion of the IJN surface fleet to do so ( and this woul delay me by several months --- which would give him enough time to rebuild ).
c) his standard of tactical play is improving in terms of TF composition and assessing and checking the details of things so as to ensure the realism of his plans. )
that he is suffering a failure to contextualise things properly. I urged him to take a step back for a couple of days, re-evaluate things at the grand strategic level and ensure that his increasing tactical nous is in service to a greater strategic plan. He has agreed and tells me he is going to post a detailed situation summary to his AAR and invite comment and advice. I would invite anyone to post anything they think might be useful to him. Obiously don't spill my exact plans but please feel free to chat about anything non-secret.
In the meantime I'm going to do an update of the mod. I've made a few changes and I think they'll benefit the mod overall. One reason I took this game over was to show that this mod wasn't too tilte toward the Japanese in mid-42. The Allies are supposed to be able to take the offensive in early 43 but in the presence of Japanese errors it is possible to fight back even before then --- which I think speaks to the balance present.
Anyways I'm going to post a thread in the scenario design section and I would invite people with ideas for balance etc to check it out and pipe up with ideas. Oh and if someone has some storage space online and is willing to host it please let me know. At this stage the page which was hosting it hasn't posted any of the recent upgrades and so I need to find somewhere else.

I tried to set up a dating service for my teenage patients with Asperger's. My business plan seemed sound, but I have yet to turn a profit. The "interests" chat room has gown to 186 topics but nobody seems to share the same interest. Oh well, so much for early retirement.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/12/42
The IJN tries again. Unfortunately only my DDs engaged and ALL of my BBs and heavy units sat the battle out. Consequently my losses were heavy but overall the IJn attack was, once again, blunted. This should be the last night I have to face the main IJN battleline and soon I should be able to operate from under contiguous air umbrellas. Sure, Damian will till get the occasional hit in but he won't be getting unopposed massive air raids or full battleline battles in any more.

Brilliant, 2 more IJN BBs eat torpedoes. None seem heavily damaged but anything which puts them in the dockyard for a month means that by the time they are free to return to action the Aleutian campaign will have been concluded.

And Umnak falls. Since I can't rely on the LRCAP from my nearby bases and the IJN naval airforce will undoubtedly be back tomorrow I'm running away from Umnak. I'll be back in a day or two once Umnak airfield is repaired but tomorrow discretion is the better part of valour.

So, all in all, Umnak is mine and now I can have air LRCAP all the way to Atka Island and lots of anti-shipping strikes out past Atka Island. I am almost done constructing a basic airfield near Petropalovsk and once that becomes Level 2 Atka Island will be completely cut off with the option of extending my base denial missions out to Petropavlovsk and exploiting deeper from there --- as I will do relatively quickly. So, all in all this is coming together nicely with ever-reducing opportunities for the IJN to intervene meaningfully.

Well, that's that settled then.
