mine damage
just a question.
In a recent game, the Colorado took 7 mines over 3 turns going into Irau for bombardment missions. I figured her close to dead, but a month later she shows up in a combat group, not even smoking. In another, a US fast BB hits one mine, ends up with 45% sys damage.
can anyone shed some light on how much damage the average mine hit will cause on a US old BB?
thanks

RE: mine damage
Depends on a dice roll basically.
In a recent game I had Yamato take 57 sys damage from ONE 16" shell hit!

RE: mine damage
no idea...but my kongo class BB got 39 sys-damage after one mine hit at shortland earlier in one of my games.

thats amazeing...and so unrealistic. more unrealistic then the barge which sunk a US SS with a 20 mm hit..someone posted this in a earlier AAR.

Although the HMS Hood blew up and sunk from a plunging shell hit to its rear magazine, the cutting edge Yamatos deck plates were fantastic and the damage seems absurd.[:)]
I didn't see that......Some sailor not stowing his gear????[;)].......wow

It seems totally random to me. I´ve had destroyers sunk by mines and others just scratched. I assume from what the others have said the same is true for the Battleships.

RE: mine damage
I just have never seen a ship take so little damage. Usually when I hit mines, the damage is as others have stated above. To see even a BB take 7 and still be in fighting condition was amazing, but I guess this was a one-off situation.

This indeed happened to Fuelli and me in our game. Of course it´s rather lucky to land such a hit. See here:

RE: mine damage
As with other hits ( shells, bombs, torpedoes ) the damage caused by a mine is based on the point ( or points - no pun intended ) of impact.
The sealed compartments of the lower decks that most (?) ships had, can minimise the flood risk. Maximum damage occurs with a bow hit as it is more difficult to prevent flooding using the "compartments" due to the volume/pressure of the water coming in due to the ships forward impetus. Damage can also be high with "stern" hits due to possible damage to the propeller shafts and/or rudder. Lucky hits are also possible re ammunition holds and engine rooms. Too many hits on the same side will also cause problems due to listing, which is difficult to deliberatley balance out without severely slowing down the ship.
A higher number of hits always increases the RISK of damage, but can never guarantee it, particularly with a ship as well armoured as a battleship.

DEB.... to continue the train of thought from your answers in another thread... I fail to see how your answer addresses the origional question I raised.
Yes, clearly, the more armor, and better the design, the less the damage suffered. So, a BB will then take less damage per hit than a DD from the same size mine explosion. However, If we are talking in historical terms, I challenge you to come up with any argument that a Colorado class BB can take 7 mine hits and still have come out not only intact but remain operational. We are talking damage roughly equal to 7 areial or perhaps 21" torp hits.
In game terms, the question was has anyone else seen something similar to this?

RE: mine damage
Experienced such incidents, but not to this extend. Have seen capital ships as CAs and BBs taking four...five...six mines over several turns during invasions and/or bombardment runs, staying alive, but then they definitely got to leave the scene. Though rarely, some cruisers even sank from mine damage. Usually the first egg causes 5 to 30 sys damage and with the third or fourth mine going off you should be well over 50.
My impression is that vessels which always have eaten some mine are more prone to steer into even more of them than "virgin" ships. And when these injured ships are limping back to port then they are quite vulnerable to air attack.

You are right in that is does not. Sorry.
I was just trying to say in my usual longwinded way that the BB in question proberly got lucky. It was not my intention to suggust that this was a "normal" event. All damage is relative to the actual point of impact.
RE: mine damage
I was just wondering if anyone else has seen something like this. Sure, the computer can roll a "1" seven times in a row I guess. I was just dumbfounded when that BB showed up not even smoking in a naval combat a short time later.

sounds pretty surreal. Please don´t get me wrong: I do not want to doubt about what´s going on with that BB.
Just some questions about your actual incident.
1st question: did it happen in a PBEM?
2nd: In the case you´re NOT playing the Japanese, please elucidate the "a month later" thing. Did the COLORADO underwent recuperation in a friendly port meanwhile? How about fl dmg right after the hit(s)?
RE: mine damage
does someone know for sure the weight of the "warhead" of the Type 93 naval mine? It seems that this must be a derivate of the pretty common Type 93 land mine, and this one was rather a "toy"

Check out this link:

Looks like models 1-3 has a 220lb (100kg) charge and the type 4 had a 243lb(110kg) charge.
